Using latent variable path analysis with partial least squares (LVPLS), the study examines the pathways between parenting
practices and children's motivational orientation toward school work over the transition to middle school. Greater external
control and lack of guidance by parents in the 5th-grade year were related to children's poorer academic achievement that
year, which in turn predicted a more extrinsic motivational orientation in 7th grade. In contrast, greater parental autonomy-supporting
behavior in the 5th-grade year was related to children's higher academic achievement that year, which in turn predicted a
more intrinsic motivational orientation in 7th grade. In all instances, children's perceptions of their academic competence
mediated the relation between 5th-grade academic performance and 7th-grade motivational orientation.

This investigation examined the precursors of adolescents’ participation in sport and music activities in the United States
by testing a developmental model across 7 years. Data were drawn from youth questionnaires in the Childhood and Beyond Study
(92% European American; N = 594). Findings suggest that patterns of participation across a 3-year period in elementary school predict adolescents’
participation through their motivational beliefs. Specifically, children who participated in an activity, children who participated
consistently across multiple years, and children who were highly active had higher adolescent motivational beliefs 4 years
later than their peers. These motivational beliefs, in turn, positively predicted adolescents’ participation 1 year later.
Cross-domain analyses suggest that children typically maintain their orientation toward sports and music (e.g., high music-low
sport orientation, not oriented toward either domain) as they age. These findings highlight the consistency in children’s
leisure pursuits and interests from childhood through adolescence. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the links between maternal and paternal bonding, parental practices, orientation
toward peers, and the prevalence of drug use and antisocial behavior during late adolescence. A model was tested using structural
equation modeling in order to verify the robustness of the investigated links across 3 countries: Canada, France, and Italy.
A self-report questionnaire was given to a sample of 908 adolescents, with an equivalent number of girls and boys, in Grade
11. The questionnaire assessed the following variables: parental bonding, parental supervision, parental tolerance, orientation
toward peers, involvement in physically aggressive antisocial behavior, non-physically aggressive antisocial behavior, and
drug use. The model was robust across the 3 countries, thus confirming a path that identified quality of emotional bonds between
adolescents and their parents as a distal variable acting upon deviant behaviors through the following mediators: parental
supervision, parental tolerance, frequency of conflicts, and orientation toward peers.

The current study expands upon body image research to examine how gender, self-esteem, social support, teasing, and family,
friend, and media pressures relate to body image and eating-related attitudes and behaviors among male and female adolescents
(N = 177). Results indicated that adolescents were dissatisfied with their current bodies: males were concerned with increasing
their upper body, whereas females wanted to decrease the overall size of their body. Low self-esteem and social support, weight-related
teasing, and greater pressures to lose weight were associated with adolescents’ negative body esteem, body image, and eating
attitudes. Females displayed more high risk eating behaviors—which were associated with more psychosocial risk factors—than
males, whose high risk attitudes and behaviors were only associated with low parental support and greater pressure to be muscular.
Reducing adolescents’ perceptions of appearance-related pressure from family and friends may be key for enhancing body image
and decreasing links between low self-esteem and negative eating behaviors and weight-related perceptions.

Over the course of adolescence, an increasing number of adolescents experience depression. In order to effectively target depression, identifying risk factors for depressive symptoms is pivotal. Since low levels of self-efficacy were associated with higher levels of depressive symptoms in previous studies, the current study investigated the bidirectional and prospective associations between depressive symptoms and academic, social and emotional self-efficacy from early to mid adolescence in a cross-lagged path model. The sample consisted of 1,341 adolescents (47?% girls) with a mean age of 14 years, SD?=?0.56. Depressive symptoms and self-efficacy levels were assessed every 6 months over a period of 2.5 years. Depressive symptoms predicted subsequent levels of academic and emotional self-efficacy on all time points, and social self-efficacy on one time point. Self-efficacy did not predict subsequent levels of depressive symptoms. There was no evidence of sex differences in the cross-lagged associations between depressive symptoms and self-efficacy levels. Implications of the findings are discussed. 相似文献

Elkind’s (1967) theory of adolescent egocentrism proposes two distinct, but related, constructs – the imaginary audience and the personal fable. A corollary to the imaginary audience, the personal fable (PF) yields a sense of invulnerability and speciality commonly
associated with behavioral risk-taking. When regarded as a developmental phenomenon, risk-taking is thought to be the result
of cognitive immaturity. However, few adolescent health programs address the egocentric dimension of decision making. We believe
that a valid and reliable measure of PF would aid assessment of risk-taking potential and inform preventive interventions.
The present paper reports the results of a newly constructed measure of PF and its relation to risk-taking behavior. The following
three hypotheses were tested using data from an availability sample of 119 middle school students: 1. PF scores will increase
with age; 2. males will score higher than females on the invulnerability dimension of PF; and 3. PF and risk-taking will be
positively correlated. As predicted, PF scores increased significantly across the age range studied. Of the two PF dimensions,
only invulnerability significantly varied across grades. Males reported significantly higher invulnerability scores than females,
and PF and risk-taking were positively correlated. Suggestions for the implementation of this new and, arguably, reliable
and valid scale are presented.

Past studies have investigated relationships between peer acceptance and peer-rated social behaviors. However, relatively
little is known about the manner in which indices of well-being such as optimism and positive affect may predict peer acceptance
above and beyond peer ratings of antisocial and prosocial behaviors. Early adolescence—roughly between the ages of 9 and 14—is
a time in the life span in which individuals undergo a myriad of changes at many different levels, such as changes due to
cognitive development, pubertal development, and social role redefinitions. The present study investigated the relationship
of self-reported affective empathy, optimism, anxiety (trait measures), and positive affect (state measure) to peer-reported
peer acceptance in 99 (43% girls) 4th and 5th grade early adolescents. Because our preliminary analyses revealed gender-specific
patterns, hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to investigate the predictors of peer acceptance separately for
boys and for girls. Girls’ acceptance of peers was significantly predicted by higher levels of empathy and optimism, and lower
positive affect. For boys, higher positive affect, lower empathy, and lower anxiety significantly predicted peer acceptance.
The results emphasize the importance of including indices of social and emotional well-being in addition to peer-ratings in
understanding peer acceptance in early adolescence, and urge for more research on gender-specific peer acceptance. 相似文献

The purpose of this research was to examine gender and body mass, as factors linked to perceived experiences within the peer appearance culture. The sample included 215 girls and 200 boys who were either in 7th grade or 10th grade. Students provided self-reports on experiences in three domains: appearance culture among friends (appearance conversations and diet/muscle talk), peer evaluations (peer appearance pressure, appearance teasing, and vicarious peer teasing), and peer acceptance concerns (appearance-based acceptance, peer appearance comparison). The results indicated that although girls reported more appearance conversations, boys perceived more appearance pressure and teasing. Boys also admitted that they talked with friends about muscle building at a rate greater than girls talked about dieting. BMI showed distinct gender patterns. BMI was a key attribute that unified the experiences within the appearance culture for overweight girls. Among the boys, BMI was associated with differentiated experiences for underweight and overweight participants.Associate Professor in Educational Psychology at the University of Washington. Adolescents’ defending behaviors in school bullying situations is likely determined by individual characteristics, social status variables, and classroom/school contextual factors operating simultaneously in the peer ecology. However, there is little research on defending behavior that utilizes this multilevel approach. This study investigated how students’ willingness to defend victims of bullying was affected by feelings of empathy, perceived popularity, and classroom-level perceived prosocial norms. Participants were 1373 adolescents (40% girls, Mage: 14?yrs) from 54 classrooms in six middle schools in South Korea. These youth reported on their feelings of empathy and how prosocial they perceived their classmates to be. Peer-ratings and peer nominations were used to estimate defending behaviors and which students were perceived as popular. Multilevel analyses showed that participants were more likely to defend victims when they had greater empathy and perceived popularity and when classroom-level prosocial norms were higher. The findings have implications for interventions to reduce school bullying and for studying defending behavior in multiple cultural contexts. 相似文献

Involvement in physically active pursuits, such as sports, contributes to achieving and maintaining good emotional and physical health. The central goal of this article was to examine the longitudinal relationships between participation (i.e., time spent in the activities) in organized and informal sports contexts and motivational beliefs, and factors that might impact these relationships, such as developmental stage and gender. The data for the current study were drawn from the childhood and beyond longitudinal study, which utilized a cohort sequential design with data collected on three cohorts across four waves. The current study sample included 986 European American youth (51 % female), who t were mostly from working- and middle-class families. Self-report questionnaires were used to collect data from the youth about their participation in sports and their motivational beliefs (i.e., value and perceptions of competence) about this activity. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the relationships between participation and motivational beliefs across childhood and adolescence. The results provide some support for a model of reciprocal relationships between participation and motivational beliefs in organized and informal sports activities. These relationships between participation and motivational beliefs did not vary significantly based on developmental stage or by gender. Overall, the findings suggest that participation in organized and informal sports contexts may be fostered by supporting the development of positive motivational beliefs about the activities across developmental periods. 相似文献

Same-sex Versus Other-sex Best Friendship in Early Adolescence: Longitudinal Predictors of Antisocial Behavior Throughout Adolescence 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study examines the relationship between having other-sex versus same-sex best friends and antisocial behavior throughout
early adolescence. Participants (N = 955) were recruited in 6th grade and followed longitudinally through 7th, 8th, and 11th grades. Participants were 58% ethnically
diverse youth and 48% girls. Results indicate that the frequency of other-sex best friendship remained stable from 6th to
7th grade but significantly increased from 8th to 11th grade. Higher rates of concurrent antisocial behavior were related
to having other-sex best friends in 6th grade but not in 7th grade. In 8th grade, there was an interaction between friendship
and the sex of friends. Boys with only same-sex best friends and girls with other-sex best friends endorsed higher rates of
antisocial behavior. Having other-sex best friends predicted antisocial behavior from 6th to 7th grade and 8th to 11th grade,
especially for girls. Implications for the development of early adolescent friendship and antisocial behavior are discussed.

The article examines gender equality in collective bargaining and looks at the extent to which gender and equal opportunities
issues have been mainstreamed in industrial relations systems in Italy where, despite the existence of old and new legislation
on gender equality, there are persistently low levels of female employment and the precarious workforce is made up predominantly
of women. The central question addressed in the article is whether the injection of a gender mainstreaming approach in the
Italian collective bargaining system, combined with legislative measures, may improve the situation of women in the context
of both public and private spheres. In particular, the article looks at whether gender mainstreaming has the potential to
pave the way towards an ethos of substantive equality at the workplace, whereby women enter the workforce on equal terms and
men are in a position to share the dual responsibilities of paid and unpaid work. The article maintains that gender mainstreaming
may fulfil its transformative potential as a catalyst for changing both the conceptual and analytical tools which the law
deploys, provided it is envisaged as a three-fold strategy involving simultaneous processes of deconstruction, replacement
and inclusive measures, together with deliberative forms of democracy and the imposition of a statutory positive duty on public
authorities to mainstream equality.

Although the role of school engagement in influencing children’s academic competence has been recognized in past theory and
research, how school engagement may mediate the relationships between ecological and personal resources and academic competence
remains largely unknown. Using structural equation modeling procedures, the present study was aimed at examining the role
of school engagement in mediating the associations between ecological and personal assets and academic competence. Data from
960 participants (45.6% boys) who took part in the Grades 5 and 6 assessments of the longitudinal, 4-H Study of Positive Youth
Development were used. Evidence was found for a model positing two distinct school engagement components, Behavioral and Emotional,
and for the role of these facets of school engagement in the relationships between developmental assets and later academic
competence. Personal and ecological assets had indirect effects on later academic competence, via behavioral and emotional
school engagement. Behavioral and emotional school engagement predicted academic competence differently. Emotional engagement
was indirectly linked to academic competence, via behavioral engagement. Behavioral and emotional engagement also had different
individual and contextual antecedents. Implications of the findings for evaluating the role of behavioral and/or emotional
school engagement in academic competence and positive youth development are discussed. 相似文献
