Time spent in freely chosen leisure activities offers a distinct developmental context that can support positive youth development; however this potential for growth depends in part on adolescent interest and engagement in their free time activities. Research indicates that many adolescents report experiencing boredom, instead of interest, in their free time. This study utilized longitudinal data from 354 rural middle school students to investigate how parenting practices and adolescent motivational styles influence adolescents’ experience of interest in their free time. Findings indicated that adolescent self-regulated motivation and parental knowledge related to the free time context were positively associated with experiences of interest, while adolescent amotivation and parental control were negatively associated with interest in free time. The effect of parental knowledge and parental control on adolescents’ experiences of interest was mediated by adolescent motivational styles. These results were similar across grade level and gender. Implications for interventions promoting positive youth development are discussed.

Several studies have indicated that an early onset of delinquent and problem behaviors is associated with a greater risk of
subsequent behavioral and mental health problems. This study builds on that literature by examining histories of behavior
problems in relation to indicators of thriving and precocious behavior during late adolescence. Using longitudinal data from
289 high-risk adolescents, participants were classified according to their problem behavior histories at ages 15 and 19. Findings
indicated that although some adolescents experienced decline over time in their overt behavior problems, those youth showed
fewer indicators of thriving when compared to adolescents with no history of behavior problems. Youth with an earlier onset
of behavior problems also evinced an increased risk for precocious behavior. Gender differences and implications for prevention
through youth development programming are discussed.

Previous research has explored how differential youth outcomes are associated with racial socialization and parenting style
individually, but very little work has examined whether democratic-involved parenting style bolsters the positive link between
racial messages and adolescent outcomes. The purpose of this study was to examine mothers’ use of democratic-involved parenting
as a moderator of the association between racial socialization (e.g., racial pride, racial barrier, and self-worth messages)
and youth engagement. The types of engagement explored were attitudes toward class work and persistence on task. Ninety-four
African American youth (ages 11–14) reported on maternal style and socialization. As predicted, racial barrier socialization
was positively associated with engagement among adolescents who perceived their mothers to provide more involvement coupled
with opportunities for their teens to make decisions. In contrast, barrier socialization and engagement were negatively associated
among adolescents who viewed their mothers as low in democratic-involved parenting. Implications for adolescent engagement
and for research on racial socialization and democratic-involved parenting style are discussed.

The Tangled Web: Delinquency, Deception, and Parental Attachment 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Mark Warr 《Journal of youth and adolescence》2007,36(5):607-622
Delinquent youth display weaker attachment to their parents than do other youth, but the reasons for this remain unclear.
One explanation is that delinquent youth poison their relations with parents by lying to them about their friends, behavior,
whereabouts, and more. Analysis of data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health reveals that lying to parents
is an exceptionally strong and robust correlate of delinquent behavior, and is associated with a variety of surreptitious
behaviors – late bedtimes, hanging with friends, concealing whereabouts. Lying to parents appears to have a progressively
negative impact on the parent-child bond, meaning that the well-established attachment/delinquency association is not solely a parent effect. Youth who lie to their parents do not appear to do so blithely, however. Compared to other youth,
they hold themselves in lower regard and are more often depressed. Although parents are often angered by and distrustful of
deceitful children, their children's fabrications may say less about their regard for their parents than about the strength
of other loyalties.

This study tested associations between adolescent perceptions of interparental conflict, adolescent attachment security with parents, and adolescent marital expectations and romantic experiences. Participants were 96 early adolescent females from 2 parent families. Insecurity was examined as a mediator of the association between negative perceptions of parental conflict and romantic outcomes. Results supported the mediation model in which adolescents' negative perceptions of parental conflict was associated with insecure attachment with parents, which was in turn associated with negative marital expectations and romantic experiences. Implications for understanding how parent-adolescent and interparental variables influence adolescent marital expectations and romantic experiences are discussed.

Participation in Youth Programs as a Catalyst for Negotiation of Family Autonomy with Connection 总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1

Current research and theory suggest that the healthy path of autonomy development involves gradual negotiation of adolescents’
independence within a context of continued family connection. This theory-generating study examined the role that adolescents’ participation
in youth programs plays in these adolescent-parent negotiations. Qualitative data from high-school-aged youth in 12 programs
and from a sub-sample of parents were analyzed employing methods of grounded theory. These analyses suggest that program participation
provides a pathway of opportunities for youth to exercise individual choice and develop qualities of self-reliance with parental
approval. In turn, parents’ observation of self-reliance in the program and youth's demonstration of these qualities in family
interactions can lead to changes in adolescent-parent relationships that provide youth greater family autonomy with connection.

The role of prejudice and ethnic awareness in the civic commitments and beliefs about the American social contract of 1,096
(53% female) adolescents (11–18 year olds, Mean = 15) from African-, Arab-, Latino-, and European-American backgrounds were
compared. Ethnic awareness was higher among minority youth and discrimination more often reported by African- and Arab-Americans.
Parental admonitions against discrimination were heard by all but African Americans, Latinos and those who reported prejudice
heard that it could pose a barrier. Adolescents’ beliefs that America is an equal opportunity society were negatively associated
with experiences of discrimination and African-Americans were least likely to believe that the government was responsive to
the average person. With respect to civic goals, all youth endorsed patriotism but ethnic minorities and ethnically aware
youth were more committed to advocating for their ethnic group and European-Americans were less committed than were African
Americans to improving race relations.

This study investigated the interaction between religiosity (defined as church attendance) and spirituality (defined as personal
beliefs in God or a higher power) on psychosocial adjustment. Four groups were created capturing 4 different religious/spiritual
orientations. Differences were assessed between the groups on a wide range of psychosocial indicators. Participants included
6578 adolescents ages 13–18 encompassing a school district in Ontario, Canada. Results were striking with regards to the consistency
with which religious youth reported more positive adjustment than did non-religious youth, regardless of level of spirituality. Spirituality may not be as salient an influence on behavior as religiosity. The secondary analyses indicated that the advantage
for religiosity may not be entirely unique to church attendance, but rather a function of being part of any community. However,
where religiosity may be uniquely associated with adjustment (over and above benefits associated with participation in any
community) is in lower levels of risk behaviors.

Academic Achievement and Problem Behaviors among Asian Pacific Islander American Adolescents 总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Yoonsun Choi 《Journal of youth and adolescence》2007,36(4):403-415
Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, this study tests whether the relationship between academic
achievement and problem behaviors is the same across racial and ethnic groups. Some have suggested that academic achievement
may be a weaker predictor of problem behaviors among Asian Pacific Islander American (API) youth; that they can have high
grades but still exhibit problem behaviors. This study finds that academic performance is a significant predictor of aggressive
and nonaggressive delinquent offenses, gang initiation, sexual behaviors, and substance use, and that the relationship generally
does not vary by race and ethnicity. Thus, there is little evidence that API youth are high achievers who are also engaging
significantly in problem behaviors. The existing perceptions of API youth may be largely based on stereotype and ambivalence.

In this article we investigate the extent to which the relationship between extracurricular activities and youth development
depends on situational contexts. Using a national sample including 13,466 youths in grades 7–12 across 120 schools, we conduct
school-level analyses of the association between extracurricular activities, delinquency, and depression. Three main findings
are reported. First, we observe near-normal distributions across schools in the proportions of delinquent or depressed youths
involved in extracurricular activities, illustrating that extracurricular activities can be positive, neutral, or negative
settings for youth development. Second, within individual schools we fail to uncover consistent associations in the propensity
of delinquent or depressed youth to be involved with different types of extracurricular activities. Third, standard macro-level
context variables do not explain the observed variations within or between schools. The results suggest that the relationships
between extracurricular activities, delinquent conduct and depressive symptoms among youth ultimately depend more upon micro-level
contextual factors than the type or content of the activities themselves.

Little is known about the impact of the relational context of adolescent sexual activity on depressive symptoms. The present
study examined trajectories of depressive symptoms among 6,602 adolescents (44% male, 60% White) taken from a nationally representative
study (Add Health). Sexually active youth in romantic and casual relationships were first compared to virgins and then to
each other by relational context. Longitudinal, multilevel models examined differences in the course of depressive symptoms
based on sexual activity separately by gender and age group (ages 12–14 and 15–18). Results indicated that when compared to
virgins, any differences in depressive symptoms by relational context of sex were present prior to youth’s sexual debut. The
few significant differences found between youth who had sex in romantic relationships verses those who had casual sex were
present before sexual initiation and not maintained over time, suggesting that casual sex in adolescence is not associated
with long-term risks for depressive symptoms.

Research indicates that social support plays a protective role among adolescents, but little research has explicitly evaluated
its function among youth involved in bullying. Accordingly, this study examined relations among social support, bully/victim
status, and psychological distress in a sample of 784 ethnically diverse youth. We assessed differences in perceived social
support across bully/victim subtypes, and evaluated peer and maternal social support as protective factors among victims,
bullies, and bully-victims. Youth were classified as uninvolved (61.6%), as bullies (14.3%), as victims (12.5%), and as bully-victims
(11.6%). Uninvolved youth reported the most peer and maternal social support and the least anxiety/depression. Multivariate
analyses revealed that there was a significant interaction between bully/victim groups and peer social support. Specifically,
bullies, victims, and bully-victims who reported moderate peer social support also indicated the least anxiety/depression.
Results highlight the importance of encouraging youth to develop and effectively use peer support networks as part of bullying
intervention programs.

This study investigated the interrelationships among trauma exposure, PTSD, and mental health problems in a sample of 289
adolescents (199 male, 90 female) detained in a juvenile correctional facility. Mean differences were found in that females
scored higher than males on measures of interpersonal trauma exposure and symptoms of both simple and complex PTSD. Females
also endorsed more mental health problems in the areas of depression/anxiety, somatic complaints, and suicidal ideation. For
all youth, trauma exposure, PTSD, and mental health problems were correlated. Results of structural equation modeling were
consistent with the hypothesis that PTSD mediates the relationship between interpersonal trauma and mental health problems
for all youth, although the results were stronger for females.

Religiosity and Alcohol Use in Sexual Minority and Heterosexual Youth and Young Adults 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Despite interest in the role of religiosity in youth development and health behavior, few studies have examined these associations
in sexual minority youth. Participants (n = 11,699) who were adolescents (wave 1) and young adults (wave 3) in the Add Health survey were used to examine proximal
and distal religiosity by sexual identity group and to test group differences in associations between religiosity and alcohol
use. Sexual minorities were less likely than heterosexuals to report a current religious affiliation. In young adulthood,
heterosexual females reported significantly higher distal and proximal religiosity than heterosexual males and sexual minority
young adults. From adolescence to young adulthood, religiosity in all three sexual identity groups (heterosexual, bisexual,
gay/lesbian) significantly declined, with the largest effects found for the sexual minority groups. Distal and proximal religiosity
scores were significantly associated with less alcohol use and less binge drinking among heterosexuals, but not among sexual
minorities. Future studies of sexual minority youth and their religious contexts are suggested.

This meta-analysis examines the relationship between active coping and psychosocial health among youth. Results from 40 studies
of coping with interpersonal stress were synthesized using a random-effects model. Four areas of psychosocial functioning
were examined: externalizing and internalizing behavior problems, social competence, and academic performance. The magnitude
of the relationship between active coping and psychosocial functioning was small, with correlations ranging from 0.02 for
internalizing behavior to 0.12 for academic performance. Mean effects were moderated by stressor controllability: youth who
used active coping in response to controllable stressors had fewer externalizing problems and higher social competence, as
compared to those who used active coping in response to uncontrollable stressors. Implications for primary prevention programs
and directions for future research on child and adolescent coping are discussed.

Research has linked youth activity involvement to positive development. However, past studies have confounded at least two separable dimensions of involvement: breadth (number of activities) and intensity (participation frequency). Theory and the limited available evidence suggest that these dimensions may make independent contributions to development. Based on self-reports from 7430 high school students, this study assessed whether breadth and intensity dimensions were related to each other, to a typical aggregate measure of involvement, and to various indicators of positive development. Breadth and intensity were moderately interrelated and, in combination, they explained the majority of the variance in the typical involvement measure. Both dimensions were positively related to each development index. When examined simultaneously, only breadth had a unique relation with each developmental index. Further, evidence of nonlinear effects was found. Findings were consistent across age levels. Implications for measurement of involvement and interpretations of the extant research are discussed.

A growing body of research has linked exposure to violence to violent behavior, but few studies have examined the impact of the timing of exposure to violence on violent behavior among inner city, minority youth. Theoretical insights derived from developmental psychology and psychopathology (DPP) and Agnew’s general strain theory (GST) give contrasting accounts of whether exposure to violence has a short term or long term impact on violent behavior. Five waves of data collected from African American youth living in twelve high poverty inner city neighborhoods was used to examine how the timing of exposure to violence over a four year time period impacts year five violent behavior. Multivariate results support GST’s contention that more proximal exposure to violence has a larger impact on violent behavior. The theoretical and practical implications of the findings for adolescent development in high poverty settings are discussed.

The current study longitudinally examines the effects of child maltreatment, parenting, and disadvantaged neighborhood on
victimization, delinquency, and well-being via running away and school engagement among a sample of 360 high-risk adolescents.
Results of a path analysis revealed that parenting was associated with school engagement, running away, and well-being. Childhood
neglect was related to victimization while sexual abuse and living in a more disadvantaged neighborhood were associated with
poorer well-being. Greater school engagement was associated with higher levels of well-being and a lower likelihood of delinquency.
Finally, running away was positively associated with participating in delinquent activities. In terms of the interactions,
results showed that the effect of positive parenting on well-being was significantly stronger for females and the manner in
which neglect related to school engagement was greater among males. Additionally, gender significantly moderated the relationship
between running away and victimization and between running away and delinquency, both of which the effects were significantly
stronger for males. Implications for families and adolescents are addressed.

Experiences with racism are a common occurrence for African American youth and may result in negative self perceptions relevant
for the experience of depressive symptoms. This study examined the longitudinal association between perceptions of racism
and depressive symptoms, and whether perceived academic or social control mediated this association, in a community epidemiologically-defined
sample of urban African American adolescents (N = 500; 46.4% female). Structural equation modeling revealed that experiences with racism were associated with low perceived
academic control, which in turn was associated with increased depressive symptoms. Findings suggest that experiences with
racism can have long lasting effects for African American youth’s depressive symptoms, and highlight the detrimental effects
of experiences with racism for perceptions of control in the academic domain. Implications for intervention are discussed.

The current study explored how body dissatisfaction and challenges associated with the transition to university predicted
symptoms of binge eating. Participants were 101 female full-time first-year university students (M=18.3 years of age; SD=.50) who completed a background questionnaire and a web-based daily checklist assessing binge eating. Hierarchical Generalized
Linear Modeling results showed that participants who were more dissatisfied with their bodies were three times as likely to
report symptoms of binge eating compared to participants who were less dissatisfied. Participants who lived away from home
were three times as likely to report symptoms of binge eating compared to participants living with parents. Finally, poor
perceived social adjustment to the university context was associated with an increased likelihood of binge eating. Discussion
calls for more research exploring the role that university challenges and adjustment play in predicting eating problems.
