Written in Their Own Voice: First-Year and Older Students' Perceptions on Their University's Identity

Undergraduate students (218 women, 57 men) attending a Roman Catholic, suburban university with a Franciscan charism tradition completed open-ended items assessing their perception on the mission, vision, and values of their university. However, only 41 lower division, first-year students (33 women, 8 men) and 29 upper division students (22 women, 7 men) actually wrote about different aspects of their school's identity. Qualitative themes emerged in regard to students' assessment of their school identity, such as university mission activities are perceived important, and overall support for different institutional values within the university community.     

Free-Standing Doctoral Programs in Community Psychology

We examined school sense of community (SSOC) between university students who are first-generation U.S. citizens (n = 936) or students who are non-first-generation U.S. citizens (n = 3,556), and between first-generation college students (n = 1,114) and students who are non-first-generation college students (n = 3,378), both attending an urban and diverse Roman Catholic university. Participants reported their SSOC and whether the school was innovative and inclusive, examining whether a higher sense of school community and positive notions of one's campus mission related to being a first-generation U.S. citizen or a first-generation college student. Results showed that a lack of belongingness may lead to lower academic achievement, school dropouts, and less school involvement. Future research should explore why there is a differing impact on school sense of community and campus mission perception for students who are first-generation U.S. citizens or first-generation college students.     

Experiential Teaching in an Adult Development Course: Promoting an Understanding of Intergenerational Interactions

Twelve students in a developmental psychology service-learning course engaged in a service-learning project with two groups of elders in an urban setting. Nine members of the class provided quantitative and qualitative feedback on this experiential learning experience. Survey results indicated that students believed the project increased their interest in the content area and that the project was a valuable aspect of the course. Based on student reflection papers in the course, students could identify specific ways the project helped them to learn course content. Finally, two interviewed students commented on how the project helped dismantle ageist preconceptions they held prior to completing the course. The project illustrates the advantages of experiential teaching in promoting interactions and understanding between diverse age groups. Three recommendations for implementing experiential teaching in community psychology and service-learning courses are presented.     

The Cycle of Violence and Disconnection Among Rural Middle School Students

Abstract

A hypothesized relationship between early violent behavior and subsequent connectedness in middle school was examined. Using self-report survey data and a hybrid structural model, the impact of violent behavior on connectedness to teachers and to school among 136 predominantly Caucasian, rural middle school students was examined. After accounting for parenting practices, which explained most of the variance in violence and connectedness, the data revealed a direct effect of violent behavior on connectedness. The data suggest that middle school students who have engaged in violent behavior are likely to experience disconnection from their teachers, and that this disconnection may provide a target for educators' efforts to prevent violence in schools.

Global and Urban Engagement to Promote Social Justice: Reflections of One’s Faith Tradition

The current study compared perceptions on self-report measures of university mission identity and social justice attitudes between general university students (151 women, 63 men; M age = 19.72, SD = 1.91) and campus ministry students (64 women, 24 men; M age = 19.85, SD = 1.71). Results demonstrated that campus ministry students scored significantly higher on each of four social justice and global/urban engagement subscales. Implications suggest that perceptions of university mission-identity are linked to social justice attitudes, yet campus ministry students compared to regular student samples may be linked to a stronger emphasis on social justice through campus activity.

从人文素质积淀谈公安院校的人文教育

公安类专科学校人文"家底"本不殷实。升格为本科院校后要补上"人文"一课。现阶段一些警官学院的课程设置过于单调,千人一面,导致学生偏科,导致知识结构不健全。要改变这种状况,必审视、检讨其主流文化——行政文化。此外,如何以科学教育促进学生的人文素质提高也是所面临的一大难题。

消费与当代大学生的身份认同

对问卷收集的资料和深入访谈的材料分别进行了统计资料分析和定性分析，从社会学的角度解释了在消费主义影响下，当代大学生怎么通过消费来实现身份认同和自我建构的。最后得到的结论是：当代大学生已经深受消费主义的影响，通过各种象征性的符号消费，来建构一种所属群体的身份，或者将消费作为一种手段来实现一种自我的认同。

刑事侦查学课程案例教学法探析

刑事侦查学课程的基本使命,就在于通过论证理论、分段分析、表述描绘、实际操作、总结论证、综合归纳等教学方法,使学生了解和掌握刑事侦查和预防犯罪,帮助侦查、预审、检察、审判机关正确地发现、预防、揭露、制止犯罪,完成特定的刑事司法任务,为刑事诉讼服务。

对一起交通肇事案的评析

案例教学法在刑法学教学中有助于提高学生的分析能力及灵活运用各种刑法理论处理案件的能力,但若案例的案情过于简单,所涉及的刑法理论知识点太少,不宜作为案例教学的素材,所以案例的选择是案例教学法的前提。这里试分析一个需综合运用众多刑法理论才能正确定罪量刑的交通肇事案件,以期为教师同行们提供教学参考,对学生们学习刑法理论有所启发,为一线从事司法实践的法律工作者提供借鉴。     

论消费文化对青少年自我认同的影响——对“圣诞节为何能在中国悄然兴起”的另一种思考

90年代初美国一本专门从事中国研究的杂志说：“在中国面临的各种危机中，最核心的危机（the core crisis）是自性危机（identity crisis）”，这个identity crisis其实就是我们必须面对的“认同危机”。作为中国面临的核心危机是一个极为沉重的话题，本文以“北大清华十名博士联名抵制圣诞节”为契机，谈一下消费文化对青少年自我认同的影响和冲击。
