About Face—the relational dimension in Chinese IR discourse

The preservation of face is an important concept in Chinese behavioral patterns, both at individual and national levels. Beyond national interest considerations, modern-day diplomacy between China and the world also involves substantially the exchange of face. This article will argue that face represents a relational understanding of how China views and interacts with the world. By linking face to three themes that international relations scholars frequently use in describing how China sees the world, namely, the tribute system, the Chinese memory of historical humiliation and China’s distrust of the American-led international system, the article hopes to show how the understanding of face—as a crucial element of Chinese identity—can inform scholars and practitioners in their attempts to engage China.

China’s exports are tapering off as the world economy teeters,but investment and consumption have maintained momentum, offsetting the impact of weakening exports. The auto market continues cooling as the with drawal of policy incentives pours cold water on buyers’interest. A bright spot is the ecommerce sector, which reported surprisingly brisk growth in the third quarter. China’s industries are currently the world’s most competitive, but the road ahead will be a bumpy one.     

Cooperation and Healthy Competition

There is potential for China and the United States to work together in many areas and improve global governance. Competition is not an obstacle as long as it is healthy. Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed a Global Development Initiative on September 21, calling for bolstering con-fidence and jointly addressing global threats and challenges to build a better world for all. Xi made the remarks at the general debate of the 76th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) via video link, as the world faces the combined impacts of changes unseen in a century and the COVID-19 pandemic. Beating COVID-19 Right now, COVID-19 is still intensely felt around the world, with the number of new cases rising every day globally. "We must beat COVID-19 and win this decisive fight crucial to the future of humanity," Xi said, voicing his confidence that "we as humanity will surely overcome and prevail" despite the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic may appear overwhelming.
