Before coming to China, we all had our own ideas about China. I used to think that all Chinese were into martial arts. Also, due to the nation's advanced technology, I used to the think all tech-related gadgets and other electronics there would be very cheap.     

Born to Dance

It was at the London premier of Bravo China! that I first saw her. She was performing Soul of the Peacock and it seemed to me not an artist but a bird - a graceful peacock with a small elegant head and proud gait - that danced before me, Four years later I met Yang Liping, arguably the most famous folk dancer in China, in person, She is of the Bai ethnic minority that lives in southern Yunnan Province.

Going 'Back' and Staying 'Out': Articulating the postcolonial Hong Kong subjects in the development of China

In examining the Hong Kongers' participation in the social development of China, I suggest that China-development provides an important local site for the study of Chinese postcoloniality. Not only does it disclose the multiple and contradicting effects of colonial power, it also embodies the conflicting visions of modern China between the official Grand Narrative of modern Chinese nationhood and the local narratives of modern Chineseness. It became a site that created discursive possibilities for individual Hong Kongers to negotiate their ambivalent identification with and resistance to China. In this paper, I show how Hong Kongers were constructed as 'free subjects' under the British colonial discourse of liberalism which in turn shaped the Hong Kong discourse of China-development. Circulating in China-development was the image of China as the oppressive and corrupt 'inside' and Hong Kong as a free 'outside' space of accountability and equality of opportunities. Vacillating between East and West, Hong Kongers came to represent themselves as modern Chinese towards which they worked to develop their mainland compatriots.

Birthplace of the Qing Dynasty

After having studied Chinese for almost three years in Jordan, I chose northeast China as my destination in an attempt to improve my standard Chinese and learn the northeastern dialect. I arrived in China for the first time in 2017, with Shenyang, capital of Liaoning Province, embarking on my journey.

论当代中国监狱文化的冲突

当代中国正步入全面的转型期，当代中国监狱也随之进入了转型期，监狱的转型本质上就是监狱文化的转型，而监狱文化的转型首先出现的是监狱文化的冲突。当代中国监狱文化的冲突主要表现在三个方面：传统与现代的冲突；本土与外来的冲突；人治与法治的冲突。     

China and Maritime Cooperation in East Asia: recent developments and future prospects

Future international relations in East Asia are likely to be largely shaped by the maritime strategies and policies of various actors. This paper examines China's policy and behavior in maritime cooperation in the East Asian region in recent years, a topic that has been insufficiently understood. I suggest that while it is necessary and useful to take into account China's naval power, more attention to Chinese intentions and policy on East Asian maritime issues is warranted to arrive at a more balanced, and arguably more accurate, understanding of China's role in East Asian maritime affairs. This paper takes stock of China's changing perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors in maritime cooperation in the region. I describe China's new policy moves in the South China Sea and East China Sea. I also address some of the major Chinese concerns for further maritime cooperation in East Asia. I conclude that while a grand cooperative maritime regime is still not possible from a Chinese perspective, China is likely to agree to more extensive and substantive maritime cooperation in many functional areas, most notably in the non-traditional security arena.     

中国古代的外室现象与妇女地位

外室本是指那些未经媒妁之言而与男子同居的妇女,后来便成为男子私下偷娶的姬妾的专称。这种现象产生于魏晋,盛行于隋唐,两宋以后变成公开合法。一夫多妻是我国封建社会合法的婚姻制度,男子大可不必偷娶外室,但由于某些原因,外室现象在中国古代还颇为流行,成为婚姻生活中的一个重要组成部分,对家庭对社会都产生了一定的影响。本文系统论述了外室现象的产生和发展的历史,从另一个角度论证了中国妇女地位的变迁。

IN 2000,when I first arrived in Paris,there were limited French products seen on the Chinese market,and vice versa.Fourteen years later,when I started Bonjour Brand,French products had deeply penetrated the Chinese high-end market.As an organizer,volunteer or visitor,I've participated in many initiatives to promote Chinese culture in France.These include activities involving calligraphy,paint-ing,Chinese opera facial makeup,embroidery,and paper-cutting,all of which are excellent art forms from China.However,despite these cultural promo-tion attempts,when you ask a French person what comes to mind when they think of China,the answer is invariably the Great Wall,made-in-China products,kungfu and pandas.

国家级科技企业孵化器的时空特征及影响因素

该文运用点密度渲染、全局自相关分析和地理探测器方法对中国国家级科技企业孵化器的时空分布特征和孵化器效率的影响因素进行了分析。研究结果表明,第一,在所考察样本及其时空阶段内,中国国家级科技企业孵化器分布密度基本呈现由东部沿海往西部内陆递减的特征,同时呈现孵化器数量空间集聚态势;第二,各个影响因素对科技企业孵化器效率的影响力度不同,且在中国的东、中、西和全国四个层面各因素的影响力度也存在差异;第三,不同因素交互作用后呈现双线性加强态势。创新水平、政府政策、基础设施水平和外商直接投资水平对国家级科技企业孵化器的效率有重要影响。不同地区为提高科技企业孵化器的效率,应注意多种因素的协同和搭配。     

Being Uniquely Universal: building Chinese international relations theory

In this paper I address the question of how Chinese scholars participate in scientific knowledge production by appropriating Western IR theories, primarily by examining interactions between North American theories that claim universality and China-specific IR efforts. Drawing on post-Mao era publications and books, I discuss how increasingly independent Chinese IR scholars are portraying their country's rising status in international politics and identifying China's national interests, while still emphasizing socialist concepts such as anti-hegemonism. The result is a form of Chinese IR scholarship that combines Western IR language with a worldview that emphasizes a modern China within the context of traditional socialist foreign policy norms. I will argue that Chinese scholarly discussions about IR theory building reflect efforts to present ‘their rising China’ (as individually perceived) in the study, research, and development of IR theory in response to the appearance of modern IR methods that require new definitions and new roles for old socialist forms. In this context, identity concerns are more important than the actual theories being established or appropriated.

中国古人提出的“天人合一”,既是一种观念形态,又是一种秩序结构。古代中国在综合运用神、道、礼、法的基础上,建立起一个大的法律控制体系;在“天、地、人”之间,王者通三;政治统治的合法性和法律控制的效能建立在自然、历史和文化的基础上,成功地实现了人与自然和谐发展。礼法结合最初表现为习惯法与国家法的结合,它是中国传统法文化精神的凝聚,对于建构一个人际和谐的社会起着至关重要的作用。中国古代和谐社会的法律控制机制给当代社会提供了有益的启示和借鉴。     

Tradition Gets A New Look

2017, the Moulin Rouge, Paris. A young Chinese man dressed in a traditional Miao costume was stopped by a doorman because the theater dress code recommends "elegant attire." "What I'm wearing is the formal costume of my hometown, the dress code." He explained. The doorman let him in and sighed, "I like your outfit. Where can I buy it?"

Digging Into the Past

It was a day in October 1921 that a tall foreign man appeared in the small village of Yangshao, in Henan Province of central China. This Swedish geologist, Johan Gunnar Andersson, had originally been invited to China as a mining adviser in the 1910s. However, a few pieces of pottery brought back from this village by his Chinese assistant made him suspect the existence of something more precious than mines.
