After having studied Chinese for almost three years in Jordan, I chose northeast China as my destination in an attempt to improve my standard Chinese and learn the northeastern dialect. I arrived in China for the first time in 2017, with Shenyang, capital of Liaoning Province, embarking on my journey.

A Leap of Language

正Prior to arriving in China in 2017,I had read various books relating to China,famous Chinese novels as well as non-fiction and the seeds of my fascination were sown.Therefore,when I arrived I couldn't have been more excited to be living in this huge historically and culturally rich country,so vastly different to my native home of the UK.The food,the landmarks,the mega cities and everyday life-I was raring to explore.     

More Development for Wuhan

I am from the city of Sulaymaniyah in Iraq but for the last 17 years,Wuhan has been my home.That’s more than the age of my daughter,Hu Yang Abu,8,who was born in the city in Hubei Province,central China.I came to Wuhan as a PhD student on a scholarship.After getting my degree in electrical engineering at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology,I stayed on and today,I teach graduate,postgraduate and Ph D students at Wuhan University.My wife Hu Changli is a Wuhan girl,so you see the city has given me love,happiness as well as my livelihood.     

Chinese bureaucratic politics and the origins of the great leap forward

This essay is a response to Alfred L. Chan's critique of my book, Bureaucracy, Economy, and Leadership in China This essay reaffirms the arguments of my book by examining the nature of politics in China in the mid 1950s through a variety of methods and some sources available after my book was published. It shows that bureaucratic politics was very common during the mid 1950s, that the Chinese political system was institutionalized, and that there were significant disagreements between top financial officials (Chen Yun and Li Xiannian) and top planners (Li Fuchun and Bo Yibo). It also argues in passing that Chen Yun was no ordinary planner; he was the most economically reform minded leader in the Soviet bloc in 1956–1957. In conclusion, I suggest some major questions for which conventional accounts cannot fully account.

A Fantasy Land

I have been a doctoral student at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China since 2017. My studies in China give me the opportunity to explore a China different from the one I've seen on TV and read about in books. What happens in the university and the larger society has always been interesting to me. AT the beginning of each year,Chinese diplo-mats visit Africa as a symbol of the special re-lationship that exists between our peoples.In February 2021,China and my country,Nigeria,celebrated the 50th anniversary of our bilateral coop-eration.Fifty years ago,Africa also played an important role in helping the People's Republic of China attain its rightful place at the United Nations.Nigeria and China are two of the world's most populous nations,with Nigeria projected to become the third most populous country by 2050.With our shared desire for collabora-tion in development and maintaining peace and security in the world,we have much in common for mutual and global interest.

Getting Started On Campus

In high school, I competed in the Beijing MUN, the premier national MUN gathering in China organized by China Foreign Affairs University(CFAU). That sowed the seed of my dream to study at the university and take part in the organization of this event," Lu Zhiyuan told Beijing Review. Today, he is a senior student at his dream college and serves as president of the CFAU Model United Nations Association. In doing so, he has realized that teenage dream.     

How Has a Chinese Village Remained Catholic? Catholicism and local culture in a northern Chinese village

This article investigates the relationship between local culture and the inculturation of Catholicism in a northern Chinese village. Little research has been conducted on the effect of local culture on the continuation of Catholicism in China. Based on my ethnographic and archival research on a Catholic village and on a neighboring non-Catholic village in northern China, the findings of this research suggest that local culture is the underlying factor for the continuation of Catholicism. Differentiated life-cycle rituals in the Catholic village from those of the non-Catholic village, a combination of Catholic belief with fengshui, local religion and local cultural symbols have been used as effective means to carry on Catholicism. This article helps explain why hundreds of Catholic villages in northern China have kept their Catholic identity for generations, and why the underground church in China could survive, but the generalization of the findings requires more and diverse cases.
