The current family planning debate in Soviet Central Asia

This paper reviews the debate that occurred in the press of the Soviet Central Asian republics during 1988 and 1989 on the issue of family planning. The author identifies three basic opinion groups, those in favor of family planning, those in favor of family planning with certain reservations, and those opposed to family planning. The role this debate has played in bringing into the open a number of political, cultural, economic, and social issues, together with data to support the positions taken that are now possible with glasnost, is noted.

<简明南亚中亚百科全书>终于出版了,这项由数十人参与编写,数十人参与编辑、校对和提供资料,历时八九年的浩大工程终于竣工了,这的确是一件值得祝贺的好事.我首先要向这一工程的参加者表示祝贺,他们多是国内相关问题研究的专家,在自己研究领域工作多年且成绩斐然.

20 0 3年 4月以来 ,印度与巴基斯坦的关系出现解冻 ,一度紧张的南亚冲突局势开始缓解 ,预示着该地区向和平与稳定迈出了重要一步。但由于印巴双方各自坚持将彻底消除“越界恐怖主义”和解决克什米尔问题作为改善两国关系的前提 ,至今未取得实质性进展。印巴关系的前景也依然受制于若干重要外部因素 ,尤其是美国的全球与地区安全战略。     

俄罗斯东正教在中亚五国

本文考察了俄罗斯东正教在中亚五国的历史与现状,审视了俄罗斯东正教对中亚五国的意义并展望了它在中亚五国的发展前景.本文认为,俄罗斯东正教在中亚五国的历史可以追溯到19世纪,它在中亚五国的发展经历了三个阶段——沙俄时期的扩张阶段、苏联时期的沉浮阶段和中亚五国独立后的复兴阶段.尽管它在宗教规模和影响力上都远不及伊斯兰教,但不可否认,长期以来,它在中亚五国政治、经济与社会文化等方面的发展中发挥了积极的作用.而未来,俄罗斯东正教在中亚五国不仅不会消亡,而且将拥有更令人瞩目的发展前景.

Selected Recent Books on Soviet Energy

This compilation comprises a special bibliography of recent books on Soviet energy prepared and annotated by the editor of Soviet Geography. An initial section contains five books with sections on nuclear power of particular interest in connection with the Chernobyl' accident. A second section of four entries is devoted to general issues of energy policy, consumption and demand, conservation, and impacts of energy development on Soviet foreign policy and world markets. The final section includes ten books addressing problems of fossil fuel development in the USSR, and efforts to overcome organizational and logistical obstacles to West Siberian oil and gas development in particular.
