Activities of the Society

The tradition of men dancing in place of women (launda naach) has a chequered history in India. The dancers mostly come from poor families with a disproportionate number from West Bengal. They face significant violence, both at home and in their profession, for so much of identity in India is centred round the family and appropriate roles within the family. Launda naach offers a certain freedom as well as a measure of economic Independence. But it remains a narrow and limited space.     

The Royal African Society: ANNUAL REPORT OF THE COUNCIL--1959

Sir Charles Arden Clarke, G.C.M.G., was elected Chairman ofCouncil at the Annual General Meeting, on April 29th, 1959,in succession to Lord Hailey. Sir Charles was the last Governorof the Gold Coast and the first Governor-General of Ghana.     

A Hundred Years of Asian Affairs: the Journal Celebrates its Centenary

The Asian Affairs Journal is 100 years old this year. This article charts the history of the Journal from its origins in 1914 as the regular journal of the Central Asian Society (later the Royal Central Asian Society and then the RSAA). It discusses the Journal's origins, its relationship with the RSAA, its developing role and form as the interests of the Society changed and developed in reaction to the two World Wars and the decline of Empire, and looks at some of the contributors of the Journal in its earlier period.

试析亚洲金融危机对印尼社会经济的影响

印尼是受亚洲金融危机影响最严重的国家 ,研究印尼在危机中的经历对我们全面深入地理解亚洲金融危机有特别重要的意义。在危机的冲击下 ,印尼的经济总量严重萎缩 ,国内生产总值倒退到 1995年以前的水平 ,人均产值下降更为严重。投资需求剧减是产值减少的主要原因 ,私人消费需求虽有所减少 ,但相比较而言 ,幅度并不太大。农业部门主要受不利自然条件的影响而陷入停滞 ,金融部门和其他更多地依赖金融部门的产业则受到严重影响。与其他受危机影响的经济体相比 ,印尼盾贬值的幅度最大 ,但出口表现并不理想。在国际货币基金组织的支持下 ,外国官方资本大量流入 ,官方外汇储备有所增加 ,但私人资本有大规模流出 ,外国直接投资也出现净流出 ,反映出社会政治动荡等因素的严重影响。贫困率和失业率有所上升 ,印尼政府为此采取了一些缓解社会危机的措施 ,但是情况并不特别严重。印尼的经历提醒我们 ,对金融业的开放需持十分谨慎的态度 ,在危机管理的过程中 ,维护社会政治稳定应被置于优先考虑的地位 ,社会各界和各阶层都应为此而努力。     

"和谐世界理论与东亚合作"研讨会在济南召开

2007年10月11日～12日,由中国社会科学院亚洲研究中心,中国社会科学院亚洲太平洋研究所《当代亚太》杂志社和山东省社会科学院共同主办的"和谐世界理论与东亚合作"研讨会在济南召开.来自国内高校和研究机构的40余名学者参加了会议.与会学者从不同角度和侧面,就和谐世界理念的形成及理论建构的基础,和谐东亚构建的有利因素和不利条件,和谐东亚构建进程中中国的战略选择等热点问题阐述了自己的观点并进行了讨论.     

McCarran's legacy: The association for Asian studies

Abstract

Historians have played an important role in modern America. While the chorus in Sigmund Romberg's musical The Student Prince bellows, “History's a mystery,” off the wooden stage and in the world of concrete and asphalt where we live our lives, historical knowledge is something other than mystery. It has been and is a major force in shaping our self-images and expectations. It can be a potent weapon for manipulating society or for resisting manipulation, and its power has been recognized by the American establishment.     

The Asian scholar and the American crisis

Abstract

National development strategies in many Third-World countries in recent years have tended to emphasize a number of Japanese-pioneered patterns, among them management methods and export-oriented industrialization. Both have been seen as crucial to Japan's rise as an industrial power; and, during the past decade, export-oriented industrialization has been behind the rise of the Asian “Gang of Four”—South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore.     

The Society's Activities

Along with the entire British Commonwealth and Empire, and agreat part of the remainder of the world, the Society rejoicesat the wedding of H.R.H. the Princess Elizabeth to H.R.H. theDuke of Edinburgh, a symbol of what we hope may prove a newera in human affairs.
