Histomorphometry was used to determine structural bone changes in drug addicts. Iliac crest bone biopsies were obtained at autopsy from 28 subjects (21 male, 7 female, aged 18 to 45 years) who had a history of drug abuse and had died due to overdose of illicit drugs. For histomorphometry, undecalcified sections were investigated using the Merz grid. The following histomorphometric indices were measured and calculated: BV/TV, BS/BV, Tb.Th, Tb.N, Tb.Sp, OV/TV, OS/BS, Ob.S/BS, O.Th, ES/BS, Oc.S/BS, and N.Oc/T.A. In 28 controls (24 male, 4 female, aged 17 to 47 years) trabecular bone specimens were investigated in the same way. The parameters in drug addicts did not show any correlation to age, body weight, height or sex differences. Trabecular bone volume and trabecular thickness were slightly but not significantly increased (BV/TV: 23.37 +/- 5.77% (mean, SD), controls 22.23 +/- 5.08%, p = 0.434; Tb.Th: 172.67 +/- 36.83 mcm, controls 169.73 +/- 36.13 mcm, p = 0.764). Only the eroded surface was significantly different to the controls (ES/BS: 8.16 +/- 2.04%, controls 6.96 +/- 2.17%, p = 0.038). We conclude that the incidence of metabolic bone disease in drug addicts is low.  相似文献

The study was performed to distinguish fatal from non-fatal blood concentrations of morphine. For this purpose, blood levels of free morphine and total morphine (free morphine plus morphine conjugates) in 207 cases of heroin-related deaths were compared to those in 27 drivers surviving opiate intoxication. The majority of both survivors and non-survivors were found to show a concomitant use of depressants including alcohol or stimulants. Blood morphine levels in both groups varied widely, with a large area of overlap between survivors (free morphine: 0-128 ng/ml, total morphine: 10-2,110 ng/ml) and non-survivors (free morphine: 0-2,800 ng/ml, total morphine: 33-5,000 ng/ml). Five (18.5%) survivors and 87 (42.0%) non-survivors exhibit intoxication only by morphine. In these cases, too, both groups overlapped (survivors-free morphine: 28-93 ng/ml, total morphine: 230-1,451 ng/ml; non-survivors-free morphine: 0-2,800 ng/ml, total morphine: 119-4,660 ng/ml). Although the blood levels of free or total morphine do not allow a reliable prediction of survival versus non-survival, the ratio of free/total morphine may be a criterion to distinguish lethal versus survived intoxication. The mean of the ratio of free to total morphine for all lethal cases (N=207) was 0.293, for those that survived (N=27) 0.135, in cases of intoxication only by morphine 0.250 (N=87) and 0.080 (N=5), respectively. Applying a cut-off of 0.12 for free/total morphine and performing ROC analyses, fatal outcome can be predicted in 80% of the cases correctly, whereas 16% of the survivors were classified as dead. Nevertheless, in this study, all cases with a blood concentration of 200 ng/ml and more of free morphine displayed a fatal outcome.  相似文献

In an important article on the methodological issues surrounding measuring of police legitimacy, Jackson and Bradford (Asian Journal of Criminology,https://doi.org/10.1007/s11417-019-09289-w, 2019) adequately warn against the use of confirmatory factor analysis as an adjudication tool for differentiating the possible sources and constituent components of police legitimacy. However, in the process of arguing against the Sun et al.’s (Asian Journal of Criminology, 13, 275–291, 2018) measure of legitimacy, they inadvertently bring attention to a more foundational issue—How should scientists conduct research and test theories in various cultures? Furthermore, their argument against the alternative measuring of police legitimacy elucidates an extensive problem facing criminology—they have brought attention paid to the interrogation of operationalizing key constructs within criminology. We argue that Jackson and Bradford’s (2019) critiques of Sun et al.’s (2018) modeling and subsequent testing of police legitimacy in China are a bit overstated. Additionally, we contend that testing theories, such as police legitimacy, across cultures should be conducted both top-down and bottom-up—neither are necessarily contradictory. We urge readers to be the ultimate amicus curiae because this issue is not a concretely right-or-wrong type issue.

Forensic taphonomy is an essential research field; however, the decomposition of human cadavers at forensic science facilities may lead to nutrient loading and the introduction of unique biological compounds to adjacent areas. The infrastructure of a water retention system may provide a mechanism for the biogeochemical processing and retention of nutrients and compounds, ensuring the control of runoff from forensic facilities. This work provides a proof of concept for a hydrologic retention system and an autonomous water quality monitoring program designed to mitigate runoff from The Southeast Texas Applied Forensic Science (STAFS) Facility. Water samples collected along a sample transect were analyzed for total phosphorous, total nitrogen, , , NH4, F?, and Cl?. Preliminary water quality analyses confirm the overall effectiveness of the water retention system. These results are discussed with relation to how this infrastructure can be expanded upon to monitor additional, more novel, byproducts of forensic science research facilities.  相似文献

目的研究健康成年男性阴茎背动脉(DA)、海绵体动脉(CA)PI、RI及S/D的正常值。方法将257名健康成年男性按年龄分为5组,分别为<30岁组65名,30~39岁组83名,40~49岁组61名,50~59岁组38名,60岁以上组10名。用Logidop!2型数字式Doppler超声血流仪检查双侧阴茎背动脉、双侧海绵体动脉PI、RI及S/D值。结果阴茎疲软状态下,阴茎背动脉、海绵体动脉PI、RI和S/D值个体左右比较无差异,各年龄组也无差异。建议正常参考值分别为:(1)LDA:PI1.43~3.43,RI0.72~0.92,S/D2.68~10.56。(2)RDA:PI1.47~3.47,RI0.73~0.93,S/D3.27~10.09。(3)LCA:PI1.49~3.21,RI0.74~0.90,S/D3.17~9.55。(4)RCA:PI1.93~3.27,RI0.72~0.90,S/D3.22~9.42。结论作为一种筛选手段,Doppler超声血流检测手段,有一定的应用价值。  相似文献

Early research on prisoner reentry was largely practical and applied, oriented to policymakers responding to the myriad challenges presented by having millions of people leaving prisons and jails each year. More recently, scholars have drawn on critical theoretical frameworks to reformulate the problem as bound up with large-scale shifts in the nature of social control (Wacquant in Dialect Anthropol 34(4):605–620, 2010a), deep racial divisions (Nixon et al. in Race/Ethnicity: Multidiscip Glob Contexts 2(1):21–43, 2008), and transformations of the United States political economy (Hallett in Crit Criminol. doi:10.1007/s10612-011-9138-8, 2011). This paper continues the work of theoretical elaboration through two avenues: (1) examining the contribution that Michel Foucault’s Discipline and Punish can make to the conceptual development of reentry scholarship, and (2) reworking Foucauldian concepts and themes important to the study of reentry to account for their racialized characteristics.  相似文献

Criminologists have long recognized that offending and victimization share common ground. Using Gottfredson and Hirschis general theory of crime, with its emphasis on self-control as a theoretical backdrop, we examine the extent to which self-control is related to both violent offending and homicide victimization. To examine this issue, we use 5-year post-parole data on violent offending and homicide victimization from a sample of parolees from the California Youth Authority. Using rare-events logistic regression models, results indicate that self-control is related to each outcome, but that other risk factors are also uniquely related to each outcome. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between adverse physical disorders and violent/non-violent criminal behaviour. DESIGN: The study material consisted of the large, prospectively followed, unselected and genetically homogeneous Northern Finland 1966 Birth Cohort, the Finnish Hospital Discharge Registers and the National Crime Register (n=10934). MAIN RESULTS: The results of the logistic regression analyses showed that male offenders had statistically significantly more injuries (adj. OR=1.81, 95% CI=1.51-2.17), when compared with males without a criminal history. Violent male offenders exhibited greater morbidity to the diseases of the respiratory system (adj. OR=1.64, 95% CI=1.03-2.60) when compared with non-violent criminals. Female offenders suffered more commonly from poisonings (adj. OR=3.84, 95% CI=1.69-8.72), injuries (adj. OR=2.79, 95% CI=1.67-4.66), infections (adj. OR=1.87, 95% CI=1.16-2.99) and indefinite symptoms (adj. OR=2.02, 95% CI=1.20-3.40) than non-offending females. CONCLUSIONS: At epidemiological level, criminal behaviour seems to be associated especially with an increased risk of injuries for both sexes. The observed increase of the diseases of the respiratory system among violent but not among non-violent males calls for further investigations.  相似文献

Duplicate breath alcohol testing from each individual provides confidence in the results when reasonable agreement (i.e. +/- 0.02 g/210 L) is achieved. For this reason many jurisdictions require duplicate testing. The State of Washington has recently implemented an infrared breath testing program and now requires two breath samples from each individual. Statistical analysis of 1847 duplicate breath tests is presented. Three variables are analyzed: first alcohol result (ALC1), the absolute difference between the two breath samples (DIFFA), and the signed difference between the two breath samples (DIFFS). The first breath alcohol result ranged from 0.021 to 0.338 g/210 L with a mean of 0.157 g/210 L. The absolute difference ranged from 0.00 to 0.05 g/210 L. The signed difference ranged from -0.05 g/210 L to 0.05 g/210 L. The absolute difference was regressed upon the first alcohol result and resulted in poor linear correlation of r = 0.212. Duplicate breath test differences do not appear to be a function of subject's alcohol level, but rather of sample provision.  相似文献

Radiological lung transparency depends on the air contents involved in respiratory function. The present study quantitatively investigated postmortem lung air distribution in forensic autopsy cases (n=135) using computed tomography (CT) to analyze cardiopulmonary pathophysiology in the death process, involving emphysema, congestion and edema. Combined analyses of the CT morphology and attenuation value (Hounsfield unit, HU) of the bilateral lungs, with reference to histopathology, could categorize CT findings (10-90 percentile mode/mean HU values) with regard to the causes of death as follows: (I) hyperaeration (mode/mean HU below -760/-560: emphysema) for obstructive pulmonary disease, starvation and hypothermia (cold exposure); (II) mostly normal aeration with partial ground glass opacification (mode/mean HU, -850 to -360/-700 to -380: partial congestion and edema), consisting of subtype II-a with peri-bronchial/-vascular opacity for mechanical asphyxia, drowning and fire fatality, and subtype II-b with decreased vascularity for gunshot head injury, cerebrovascular disease and hemopericardium; (III) hypoaeration to airless with predominant hypostatic ground glass opacification (mode/mean HU, -870 to 0/-720 to -200: mottled hypostatic congestion and edema) for blunt head/neck injury, intoxication, hyperthermia (heat stroke) and congestive heart failure; (IV) hypoaeration to airless with predominant hypostatic consolidation (mode/mean HU, -790 to 0/-520 to -70: intense hypostatic congestion with edema) for acute ischemic heart disease; and (V) airless to consolidated (mode/mean HU over -420/-370: segmental or multiple patchy consolidations with edema) for pneumonia. Mode HU represents the major alveolar status, while the mean HU reflects the whole lung air contents. CT data analysis is useful for quantitative evaluation of pulmonary pathology as a supplementary procedure.  相似文献
