August 1989Hot town, summer in the city, with temperatures in the high 30s. Amazingly enough, the heat is bearable because there is plenty of shade. Nanjing is famous for the plane trees that line its streets and avenues. JAPANESE products and billboards advertising them, are seen everywhere in China's larger cities, other than Nanjing that is. Whilst in Nanjing recently I did see the odd Lexus and Mazda on the city's tree-shaded roads, and one or two books by Japanese writer Haruki Murakami at the Xinhua Book Store by Xuanwu Lake. There were also large amounts of Japanese-brand digital products on sale at the downtown shopping center, but all were marked "Made in China."
