SHANGHAI was a humble fishing village in the 11th century during the Northern Song Dynasty. The area expanded into an agricultural hinterland and cotton and silk industry center during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). During this period its trading potential as a deepwater port at the mouth of the Yangtze River was exploited. Shanghai became an international port and center of finance during the latter half of the 19th century. In its heyday, Shanghai was the acknowledged Eastern adventurer's paradise. By the 1920s it had become the point of convergence for merchants from France, Britain, Germany and the United States.  相似文献

THE Suzhou River of Shanghai assumes many kinds of importance to the city's residents. From the opening of its port in 1843, Shanghai's urban district sprawled along this river from east to west. At that time, foreigners residing in Shanghai knew that this river led to Suzhou, and silk and tea flowed along it from the hinterland by ship; thus its name - the Suzhou River. Originating from the Taihu Lake, and crossing the Jiangnan section of the Grand Canal, it also in fact flows through Wujiang, Wuxian, Kunshan, Jiading and Qingpu, then joins the Huangpu River at Shanghai's Waibaidu Bridge.  相似文献

The old city had a population of 80,000, and over the years, its people have borne witness to Tianjin's many changes. As time passed, the origi-nal city grew older, and a large concentration of traditional, single-story houses formed within the new city. In 1995, Tianjin began to renovate its run-down areas. Residents were relocated, and although happy to move into their brand-new apartments, when the day came, they were also a little sad at leaving their past behind.  相似文献
