Manas Studies： a New International Discipline

In 1999, the publication of five works in the first series of＂China Epic Studies＂ marked a new phase in epic studies in China. The subject of one of those five books was Manas. Ms. Lang Ying from the epic study team of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences is in charge of the research on Manas.     

Exhibition of Origin of Ancient Chinese Characters Held in Japan

It was rainy season in Kanazawa, the seat of the government of Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan in the latter half of June. The flowers on both sides of the street were blossoming brightly in the drizzling rain. The exhibition "Origin of Ancient Chinese Characters" was mounted in the Ishikawa Pre-fectural Museum of Art in downtown Kanazawa on June 25.

Embarrassment of Western Human Rights Diplomacy towards China

Nowadays human rights diplomacy is nothing new. This is because in recent years it often comes into relations between China and countries in the West and becomes hot issues. Countries in the West are the creator of human rights diplomacy. During the administration of President Jimmy Carter in the 1970s, the United States for the first time asserted that human fights are central to U.S. foreign policy, and the Carter administration has been known for its human fights diplomacy. Much earlier, in fact, the concept of human fights diplomacy had appeared in the thinking and views of some statesmen in the West.     

Origin of the ＂Easl Turkistan＂ Issue

Shen Xueren was born in Weifang City,Shandong Province in June 1941.He graduated from the Central Academy of Arts in 1966,and re- ceived a doctor's degree at the United Nations International University. Now,he is a member of the China Artists Association and the Chinese Calligrapher Association,a consultant for the China International Association of Celebrity,the arts and cultural exchange ambassador of the World Peace Foundation,an honorable member of the British Royal Joint Academy of Sciences,a researcher at the Research Center of the World Cultural Arts and an honored painter of the Cultural Market Development Center of the Ministry of Culture. In 1978,Shen created the Flower Painting Association.In the same year,he participated in the setting up of Beijing Painting Shop.In 1980,he created the Research Association of Flower and Bird Paintings together with his friends.In 1999,he set up Shen Xueren Art Gallery and Shen Xueren Art Museum.From 1982 to 2000,he had many art exhibitions in many countries including the U.S.A.,Japan,France,Canada and Singapore.Wu Zuoren,Chairman of China Artists Association,attended the opening ceremony of his exhibition in Beijing.The chairman of the Artists Association hosted his exhibition in France.The Chinese Ambassador in Canada,Yu Chen,hosted his exhibi- tion in Canada. The local TV and newspapers report on his exhibitions,and his artwork is collected by embassies and museums.He was invited to draw pictures for the National Museum of China,the Great Hall of the People, Xinhua News Agency,the People's Daily and CCTV,and was also invited to the University of Toronto to give lectures on Chinese painting. Shen has won many awards in many countries.These include an award of excellence for international ink paintings held in Japan in 1986, an award of excellence for new in- ternational art exhibitions in 1988 in Japan,the gold medal of the second Chinese Art Competition in 1999,a sil- ver medal in the 2000 World Chinese Art Exhibition,and a special award from the 2001 Beijing International Art Exhibition.In 2007 his artwork was collected by the UN World Peace Foundation and was awarded the World Peace Art Achievement Award. He was given the title World Art Master.     

Peacock Dance

CHINESE folk dance is a microcosm of the country’s rich culture.The Peacock dance of the Dai ethnic group is one of the most traditional folk dances in China.The presence of the Dai was first recorded in Han books in the f irst century.This ethnic group is mainly found in Yunnan in southwest China,the province known as the "land of eternal spring." It has its own language,calendar and medical science.Though being in a border area,the Dai people have always maintained contact with the heartland economy and culture.

Alarge quantity of well preserved fossils of pre-historic marine life have been found .in the strata of the mountainous region in Guanling National Geopark in Guizhou Province. ＂It looks like their cemetery,＂ commented Zhang Dapeng, curator of the geopark museum, pointing to the staggered array of quiet mountains in the distance that houses their graves. But that＇s a gloomy view of a geopark that in fact sparks a lot of delight, pride, and some controversy as well.     

The Middle Dinosaur Kingdom

Dinosaur fossils have been periodically unearthed in various parts of China for more than a century. In 2006, the fossils of the Stegosaur that bear the largest scapulars ever excavated, and of the Mamenchisaurus (the longest dinosaur in Asia) were discovered in Xinjiang. The same year there was a world f irst discovery of fossils of the Dicraeosaurus (a kind of di- plodocoidea) in Lingwu City, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. The draft of the human genome sequence was released in 2001, an im- portant milestone in the process of acquiring genetic infor- mation on human beings. Together with the Manhattan Project and the Apollo Program, the ambitious Human Genome Project is known as one of the three great projects in the history of human science. Differing from the former two projects, which focused on the atomic bomb and explora- tion of outer space, respectively, the Human Genome Project focused on human beings. This is a great shift.
