The work of Robert Putnam has provoked a lively debate on the democratic importance of a robust civil society. Criticism of his work concentrates on the fact that his concept of social capital conceives of the relationship between civil society and government predominantly as a one-way affair – a strong civil society is good for politics. Taking up this line of argument, an appreciation of political factors is promoted to explain varying patterns of civic engagement. Now that Western governments increasingly initiate and stimulate citizens' participation in policy-making, it is becoming even more important to assess the role of the state. Drawing on recent empirical research on local practices in the Netherlands, we examine a Dutch variant of such top-down participatory arrangements – so-called 'interactive policy-making'. We ask whether, and under what conditions, democratic advances can be expected from top-down state initiatives. And we develop a theoretical framework for assessing the democratic effects of top-down participatory initiatives. Squaring the main theoretical criteria with the empirical reality of interactive policy-making, we conclude that an active state does not necessarily corrode civil society. 相似文献

Antecedents and Outcomes of Self-Determination in 3 Life Domains: The Role of Parents' and Teachers' Autonomy Support 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Due to conceptualizations of autonomy as detachment and independence, research on the parenting–autonomy relationship in adolescence
has yielded inconsistent results. In the present study, self-determination is proposed as an alternative way of tapping into
the construct of autonomy. An integrated model of the relationships between perceived parenting and teaching styles, self-determination
in 3 life-domains (school, social competence, and job-seeking behaviors), and specific adolescent outcomes, was investigated
and confirmed. In 2 samples of mid-adolescents (N = 328 and N = 285), autonomy-supportive parenting was significantly related to self-determination in all life-domains. Autonomy-supportive
teaching added significantly to the prediction of self-determination in the domains of school and job-seeking behaviors. Self-determination,
in turn, was positively and specifically associated with measures of adjustment in the specific life-domains under investigation.
Finally, in both studies, indications were found that self-determination acts as an intervening variable in the relation between
the perceived interpersonal environment and adolescent adjustment.

The possibility to assess psychopathy through self-report is debated, amongst others, because psychopathic individuals may deliberately underreport psychopathic features (fake good). Meta-analytic research has shown an inverse relation between faking good and self-reported psychopathy, possibly indicating that faking good lowered psychopathy scores (response bias). Low faking good scores, could, however, also reflect true variance in psychopathic personality to the extent that it reflects a disregard of social conventions. Through a secondary analysis (n = 675), we show that controlling for faking good significantly weakens, rather than strengthens, the associations between psychopathy scores and antisocial behavior (alcohol and drug abuse, indirect aggression, and delinquency). These findings indicate that the inverse relation between faking good and self-reported psychopathy reflects true variance in psychopathy personality (i.e. low social desirability), not a response bias. 相似文献

The current study investigated whether differences in loneliness scores between individuals with a distressed personality
type (type D personality) and subjects without such a personality varied by domestic violence victimization. Participants
(N = 625) were recruited by random sampling from the Municipal Basic Administration of the Dutch city of ‘s-Hertogenbosch and
were invited to fill out a set of questionnaires on health status. For this study, only ratings for domestic violence victimization,
type D personality, feelings of loneliness, and demographics were used. Statistical analyses yielded main effects on loneliness
for both type D personality and history of domestic violence victimization. Above and beyond these main effects, their interaction
was significantly associated with loneliness as well. However, this result seemed to apply to emotional loneliness in particular.
Findings were discussed in light of previous research and study limitations. 相似文献

After the horrors of the First World War, different initiatives were taken to introduce and institutionalise principles of international organisation such as collective security and arbitration in international relations. The League of Nations was founded, and different bilateral and multilateral arbitration treaties were concluded. This article studies the reception of these internationalist principles by Belgian policymakers and diplomats. I will argue that this reception initially ranged from cautiousness to clear scepticism. Although an evolution towards increased trust in collective security and arbitration can be observed between 1919 and 1929, Belgian policymakers' and diplomats' views during this period remained predominantly based on realist premises and beliefs. 相似文献

In the public administration literature, a variety of responses to value conflicts have been described, such as trade‐offs, decoupling values, and incrementalism. Yet little attention has been paid to the possibility of constructive compromises that enable public managers to deal with conflicting values simultaneously rather than separately. The authors use Luc Boltanski and Laurent Thévenot's theory of justification to extend current conceptualizations of management of conflicting values. On the basis of a qualitative study of daily practices of Dutch health care managers (executives and middle managers), they show how compromises are constructed and justified to significant others. Because compromises are fragile and open to criticism, managers have to perform continuous “justification work” that entails not only the use of rhetoric but also the adaption of behavior and material objects. By inscribing compromises into objects and behavior, managers are able to solidify compromises, thereby creating temporary stability in times of public sector change. 相似文献

The international diamond trade always has been a somewhat closed world in which different rules applied compared to other
sectors. The myths and mystic surrounding diamonds as the most precious material on earth are in sharp contract with the contemporary
demand for transparency. The clarity of a diamond, one of its four valuables, is not reflected in the ways of the diamond
industry. However, recent initiatives, such as the Kimberly Process, which attempts to put a ban on blood and terror diamonds
and a handful of banking scandals, have brought a wind of change. This wind of change is to some extent a mere side-wind fanned
by the hurricane of the global anti-money laundering and anti-terrorist financing movement. Banks financing the diamond trade,
assurance companies providing insurances to the sector and the diamond traders and retailers have all become subject to AML
and CFT legislation. Compliance has become the magic word in the world of financing, along with transparency, but the diamond sector proved to be a slack student in this respect. This paper explores the different aspects of compliance
by diamond sector market players and examines whether the extension of the regulatory framework to these players have brought
a shift in responsibility, away from the financial institutions financing the diamond sector. In addition it addresses the
question whether the regulatory framework and regulatory practice are sufficiently developed to enable effective supervision
by the authorities.
