Suffragist Matilda's Gage's Woman, Church and State, 1893, invites a revisit because it was a pioneering study in world history with woman as its central issue. While labeled an amateur, Gage's work demonstrated an excellent grasp of nineteenth-century historical scholarship and she offered interpretive insights that tied nascent anthropological theory to historical analysis. For these reasons she is best understood in relation to the women scholars of the 1890s and subsequent decades who created a well-researched and scholarly new history of women. 相似文献

The boundaries between selves and within selves are notions that have been subject to constant readjustment in the debates between liberals and communitarians. Through the archetype theories of Rawls, Nozick, Sandel and Parfit this essay re-enacts the deconstruction of one of the intuitive certainties of earlier liberal thought. Counterintuitive alliances are struck across the liberal-communitarian divide in demonstrating that the impersonality required by any theory of justice puts pressure on every notion of personality within it. Parfit radicalizes the problem of identity for everyone, permitting us to view old problems from new perspectives. 相似文献

In 1982 U.S. businesses will spend over $10 billion (12 percent of the total retail alcohol market) on alcoholic beverages which will be consumed by top executives, professionals, and other white-collar employees in a variety of business and personal settings. The Internal Revenue Service, through a series of vaguely defined tax deduction categories, permits these expenditures to be deducted from corporate and individual taxes as "ordinary and necessary" to the conduct of business, costing U.S. taxpayers between $3 and $5 billion annually in lost tax receipts. This article examines the scope and legal underpinnings of the IRS tax expenditure policy; its impact on drinking habits and drinking problems among the nation's business and professional elite; the arguments for permitting the subsidization of corporate drinking habits; reform measures that are available to policymakers; and the barriers to effective implementation. 相似文献

Problem definition studies focus on the ways in which problems are characterized in the political domain, and how they can be used strategically to limit or expand policy participation. Nanotechnology entrepreneurs are vying for resources in the political domain while strategically linking their nano‐solution to multiple and ambiguous problems. This article considers the evolution of nanotechnology as a solution, and the linked problems from a problem definition perspective. We consider how nanotechnology has been defined over time, in the scientific community and in the media, through development of a database of problem and solution definitional change. We find that, over time, advocates have defined the solution from a more narrow perspective while maintaining the overall ambiguity of the problem set. We suggest that the problem definition perspective is a viable framework for understanding the fluid and complex dynamics of science and technology issues and offer several suggestions for further research. 相似文献

This paper examines prospects for transnational advocacy and regimes as a way to buttress national labor laws and institutions in an interlocking mosaic and thus ensure the continuation of strong systems of industrial relations under conditions of increasing economic integration. We argue that there is a role for transnational solutions as a supplement to national systems, and we assess the conditions necessary to make this approach effective. We look at a variety of possible actors and arenas that could foster transnationalism and provide illustrations of transnational advocacy and regime building. We conclude that elements of a multilevel, public-private transnational regime are present in some parts of the world and that these elements can occasionally be knit together. We find that prospects for an effective and sustainable system of transnational multi-level regulation are greater when regional integration pacts such as the EU and NAFTA create transnational norms or forums. But, based on preliminary analysis of transnational advocacy and regulation in these two areas, we also conclude that no fully effective system has yet emerged. 相似文献
