Telephone surveys have been a principle means of learning about the attitudes and behaviors of citizens and voters. The single
mode telephone survey, however, is increasingly threatened by rising costs, the declining use of landline telephones, and
declining participation rates. One solution to these problems has been the introduction of mixed-mode surveys. However, such
designs are relatively new and questions about their representativeness and the intricacies of the methodology remain. We
report on the representativeness of a post election mixed-mode (Internet and mail) survey design of 2006 general election
voters. We compare sample respondent means to sample frame means on key demographic characteristics and examine how mail and
Internet respondents differed in terms of attitudes, behaviors and demographics. We find that overall the Internet respondents
were representative of the population and that respondent choice of mode did not influence item response. We conclude that
mixed-mode designs may allow researchers to ask important questions about political behavior from their desktops. 相似文献

Contemporary and alternative justice paradigms lead to definitions of wrongdoing as "lawbreaking" and "harm to social relationships" respectively. The retributive model within the contemporary justice paradigm results in strategies to accomplish justice that focus almost exclusively on the wrongdoer. In contrast, the restorative model within the alternative justice paradigm yields justice practices that focus on the relationships among all individuals harmed by the wrongdoing. Calgary Community Conferencing is an example of a restorative approach to wrongdoing. The relational emphasis of this program is operationalized through its organizational location, intended outcomes, and program activities. The challenges faced by Calgary Community Conferencing provide other agencies with ideas about dilemmas they might encounter in attempting to develop restorative justice programs. 相似文献

Little is known about the labour market impact of immigration to developing countries, because most immigration to developing countries is poorly measured. We use an unusual dataset from a campaign to register irregular migrants to study how immigration has affected wages, employment, and internal migration in Thailand. We allow for endogenous migration, whereby immigrants are disproportionately attracted to areas with higher wages. Our results suggest that immigration sufficient to increase Thailand's total labour force by one per cent would reduce Thai wages by approximately half a per cent. This effect is stronger than is generally found in developed countries. We find no evidence that immigration has reduced Thai employment rates or has affected internal migration by Thais. 相似文献

This article argues that those keen to characterise and harness the empowering potential of Information and Communications Technology [ICT] for development projects must understand that the very existence of this technology opens up alternative models of co-operation and collaboration. These models themselves necessitate breaking away from ‘traditional’ command-and-control models of management. One alternative is to persuade participants, or potential participants, to co-ordinate their efforts along the lines exemplified by the open-source software movement and the contributors to Wikipedia: models of co-ordination that ought not to work but appear to do so. The article offers a summary of this argument, and then suggests ways in which NGOs in particular might try to incorporate these insights into their strategies. This is particularly critical for organisations that rely on increasingly pressurised funding opportunities, and which also seek to develop and engender participation and determination from within and among specific target groupings. 相似文献

Village funeral societies in north-east Thailand collect equal contributions from all participating households, even though some households are much more likely to experience deaths and receive money from the funeral society than others. The societies' use of the equal contributions rule is not an outcome of the asymmetric distribution of information on risks. It reflects, instead, an ambivalence over the relevance of expected returns, a willingness to subsidise fellow villagers, and the need to maximise simplicity and transparency to safeguard against mismanagement and corruption. Involvement in civic and community activities is a core part of positive youth development. Adolescents involved in voluntary
civic activities have greater academic engagement, enhanced well-being, less involvement in problem behaviors, and they are
more likely to value connections to their community than those who are not involved. The current research examined involvement
in school and community civic activities as well as religious youth groups among 8th and 9th graders (N = 679, 61.7% female, 85.9% White) from small, rural schools in the Midwest U.S. and linked involvement to religiosity, well-being,
problem behavior, academic engagement, and perceptions of parents and peers. Half of the adolescents in the sample reported
involvement in civic activities or, more commonly, in religious youth groups. Adolescents who participated in religious youth
groups reported more extracurriculars, less problem behavior, higher grades and motivation, and more support from parents
and friends than adolescents who did not. The most frequently reported school civic activities were student council and Future
Farmers of America, and 4-H was the most popular community civic activity. Those who were involved in school- and community-based
civic activities reported more religiosity, academic engagement, and positive perceptions of parents and peers than uninvolved
youth. The results support and extend research on rural youth by documenting civic activities across contexts and examining
how involvement is associated with positive youth development. 相似文献
