Structure of the nanoscience and nanotechnology applications literature

The Applications literature associated with nanoscience and nanotechnology research was examined. About 65,000 nanotechnology records for 2005 were retrieved from the Science Citation Index/Social Science Citation Index (SCI/SSCI) (SCI (2006). Certain data included herein are derived from the Science Citation Index/Social Science Citation Index prepared by the Thomson Scientific^®, Inc. (Thomson^®), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA) Through visual inspection of the Abstract phrases, all the diverse non-medical Applications were identified, and the relationships among the Applications, both direct and indirect, were obtained. The medical applications were identified through a fuzzy clustering process. Metrics associated with research literatures for specific Applications/Applications groups were generated.     

Artenschutz in der Rechtssprechung des Europäischen Gerichtshofs

Mit einer Reihe jüngerer Urteile hat der EuGH die Fundamente einer einheitlichen Anwendung des Artenschutzrechts nach der Habitatrichtlinie 92/43 gelegt. Insbesondere seine Feststellungen zum Begriff der Absicht verleihen den einschl?gigen Bestimmungen gro?e Wirkung, doch sollte man diese nicht überspannen, indem man sie ungeprüft auf den Vogelschutz übertr?gt. Weitere Klarstellungen betreffen den Schutz von Fortpflanzungs- und Ruhest?tten, die Verpflichtung zu vorbeugenden Schutzma?nahmen und die Ausnahmen vom Artenschutz. Insbesondere im Licht dieser Rechtsprechung erweisen sich die Vorschl?ge zur ?nderung des Bundesnaturschutzgesetzes nur teilweise als geeignet, Umsetzungsm?ngel zu beseitigen.     

Triggering Parent Company Liability Under United States Sanctions Regimes: The Troubling Implications of Prohibiting Approval and Facilitation

GE, the parent company, is a corporation organized in the United States. The laws of the United States frequently extend to the operations of GE and its affiliates throughout the world as well as to the business activities of GE employees wherever they live and work. Other countries may also apply their own laws outside of their borders to their own citizens and to corporations that are organized under their laws, such as GE subsidiaries or other controlled affiliates… . In some instances, there may be a conflict between the applicable laws of two or more countries. When you encounter such a conflict, it is especially important to consult company legal counsel to understand how to resolve that conflict properly. ¹     

TRUST OR CONTROL? PRIVATE DEVELOPMENT COOPERATION AT THE CROSSROADS

Non‐Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in the field of international development are increasingly adopting so‐called managerial working methods. This article explores the changing belief systems and practices of Northern development NGOs as well as the strains arising from this adoption. We draw upon a literature review and case studies of two Northern development NGOs and their Southern counterparts in Ghana, India and Nicaragua. Our findings show that managerialist ideas and practices clash with a number of values, views and goals that “traditionally” have been widely shared in the private aid channel. To ensure that their actual practices remain consistent with their belief systems, Northern development NGOs cannot avoid making tough choices that will have key consequences for their future relevance and identity.
