Capturing women's lives: A discussion of time and methodological issues

Time is an important underlying concept in life course research and in the use of the “life-line method” an approach that has gained interest among researchers examining women's lives more processually. Notwithstanding, the author argues that time itself is not sufficiently problematised in this context. In the first part of the paper, the question is posed: What do we mean by time? It is argued that the Newtonian mechanical view of time, which is used in social science research and is the basis for the life-line method, limits our ability to capture the complexity of individuals' and especially women's everyday lives. A discussion of theories of time leads to an examination of methodological problems that are inherent in doing and presenting life histories.     

‘Any Place I Hang My Hat?’ or: Residence is the New Nationality

Abstract:  Removing all nationality discrimination means treating the emigré national like a foreigner, not just treating the foreign resident like a national. This challenges directly the idea that the national enjoys a permanent bond with his home country, wherever he may go. It also ushers in residence as an alternative to nationality as the criterion for membership of society and rights to benefits. This makes national solidarity a less discriminatory affair, and so easier to defend legally. One result may be tighter, in some ways less open societies. Yet membership of these societies will be voluntary and temporary and open to all. This argument is developed through a critical examination of recent judgments from the Court of Justice on residence conditions in national law.     

A survey of the provision of family therapy in medium secure units in Wales and England

A cross-sectional survey design was utilised to capture a snapshot of the provision of family therapy in medium secure units (MSUs) across Wales and England during 2013. Semi-structured interviews were administered via telephone interview with 39 MSUs. Information pertaining to the main research question was also gathered from a further 10 via email follow-up. Over a third of responding MSUs in Wales and England were offering family therapy, with team members being appropriately qualified and receiving regular supervision. Systemic psychotherapy was the most prevalent approach to working with families and it is suggested here that systemic psychotherapy fits well with the complexity and uniqueness of working with families in secure contexts.
