Recent books on the East

The following paper was discovered by Laurence Evans, Professor of History at the State University of New York at Binghamton, during the course of research in the files of the Department of State (to which Department the paper had been made available in 1918 for use as background information by the American Delegation at the Peace Conference), and Professor Evans has kindly communicated it to the Society. Its contents are not included in the book on Mecca which Snouk published in German, and it is not among the scattered articles in Verspreide Geschriften (1923–27). That collection does, however, include another essay about Ahmad Dahlan, in Dutch, entitled “Een rector der Mekkaansche universiteit”, originally contributed to a learned journal and reprinted in vol. 111, pp. 65–122. 论以人为本与构建社会主义和谐社会

构建社会主义和谐社会,是党的十六大和十六届四中全会提出的重大任务。以人为本,则是中国共产党为实现全面建设小康社会的宏伟目标而提出的一个指导方针和重要原则。以人为本与构建社会主义和谐社会的关系体现在:以人为本深刻地体现着马克思主义的历史观、价值观和方法论,是构建社会主义和谐社会的根本指导原则;以人为本与构建社会主义和谐社会是内在统一的;坚持以人为本是构建社会主义和谐社会的必然要求。     

日本防卫厅升格令人关注

11月30日,日本众议院通过了旨在使防卫厅升格为防卫省的《防卫厅设置法修正案》.12月15日,该法案在参议院获得通过.这样,2007年1月9日,防卫厅便将正式升格为"防卫省",现任防卫厅长官久间章生将成为日本首位防卫大臣.该法案的通过意味着,52年来以"防卫厅"的名义"羞答答"地存在的日本防卫机构终于"掀起了盖头".由"厅"到"省"的一字之差意味着日本武装力量的性质、指挥体制将发生根本性变化,其后续动作更值得关注.
