Family values reconsidered: a response

Abstract

It is wonderful to receive so much careful attention. But it’s also frustrating. Each paper poses important questions, and between them they cover a wide range of issues. It is challenging, on such big topics, and in so few words, simultaneously to set the record straight, to identify the various objections posed by our critics, and to respond to them in a way likely to advance our collective understanding of the issues. Still, here goes.     

The 3rd Scheme between Secularism and Religion

Muslim societies and Islam in the West are in need of an anthropological shift in Islamic thought. Global regimes abuse the religious argument for the purpose of obedience towards totalitarian rule. Hence, Islam as a kind of regal religion becomes the basis for the violation of the ethical standards it stands for: peace, justice and security. However, the contingent situation between religious and secular world-views requires new pragmatic approaches in terms of conflicting assumptions of authority. The Koran entails some intriguing answers to this challenge that deserve further attention.     

A Liberal Marxism? Mutual Care,Global Humanity and Minimum Utopia

This article surveys The Norman Geras Reader: ‘What’s There is There’, a recent collection of the work of Norman Geras, edited by Eve Garrard and Ben Cohen. The article explores the relevance of Geras’s attempted reconciliation between liberalism and Marxism to some of the key issues confronting the contemporary left: foreign policy and the failures of humanitarian intervention and non-intervention; internationalism and the necessity for solidarity across borders in an age of nationalist populism; left approaches to totalitarianism and antisemitism; the possibilities and limitations of alternatives to and critiques of liberal capitalism; and the reinvigoration of utopian imaginaries and the futures they promise. It suggests that important lessons for the left can be unpicked from the contested legacy of the ‘decent leftism’ Geras represents, where reapplied in the wake of new political and diplomatic challenges.
