with increasing frequency, courts and legislatures are focusing attention on visitation disputes in which there are allegations of domestic violence. This article explores the requirements for a careful assessment of the domestic violence issues, theparenting capacities of the adults, and the coping skilk of the children. It then proposes a decision-tree model of access recommendations that incorporates the information gatheredfmm the evaluation procedures.     

YOU HAZE, I SUE: A FRATERNITY STEW

A male student who was bound with duct tape and barricaded in a room was rescued from a fire early Saturday morning at the Sigma Nu fraternity house at Washington State University. No one was injured in the fire, which left the residence uninhabitable…. The student was found by firefighters who were checking that everyone had left the building, and was not in a wing of the house where the blaze began. [A university spokesperson]… said that hazing was 'strictly against the rules' and that the student appeared to be the victim of 'someone playing a prank.'     

CHALLENGES FACING CROSSOVER YOUTH: AN EXAMINATION OF JUVENILE‐JUSTICE DECISION MAKING AND RECIDIVISM

Although a substantial amount of research documents the increased likelihood of maltreated youths to engage in delinquency, very little is known about them once they cross into delinquency. These youths are often referred to as “crossover youth,”“dual jurisdiction,” or “dually involved” youth, and based on a growing amount of research, it appears these youths face a number of challenges. They have significant educational problems, high rates of placement changes and high rates of substance abuse and mental health problems, and when they enter the juvenile justice system, they are more likely to stay longer and penetrate deeper into the system then their nonmaltreated counterparts. Using data from Los Angeles County (N= 581), the purpose of this study is to identify what characteristics among a crossover population are more likely to result in receiving harsher dispositions and higher recidivism rates.     

One Size Does Not Fit All: Traditional Lockdown Versus Multioption Responses to School Shootings

ABSTRACT

Two paradigms inform responses to active shooting situations: a traditional lockdown approach where individuals find cover in a classroom and lock the door, and a multi-option approach where individuals evacuate the area, create barricades, and, in last resort situations, actively resist the gunman. While a majority of schools conduct active shooter drills, typically using a traditional lockdown approach, little is known about their effectiveness. Through simulations, this study sought to determine which of the two paradigms that inform active shooter drills is the most effective. Drills informed by the multi-option response paradigm were found to end more quickly and result in fewer people being shot.     

High‐tech Start‐ups in Europe: The Effect of Regulatory Competition on the Emergence of New Business Forms

This paper will examine the theoretical arguments for and against the importance of new business forms for the growth of start‐ups. Part I briefly reviews the recent history of business organisational law and reform within Europe. Our review of extant European business forms reveals that the absence of new business entities (and structural reforms) may be due to status quo bias and other network effects. Turning to the importance of new business forms, Part II addresses the question which organisational and legal structures are favourable for the growth of start‐ups. It is suggested that the introduction of an efficient organisational form for start‐ups is crucial to further stimulate the development of a successful venture capital market in Europe. In Part III we give consideration to the possibility of developing new business forms, based on US mechanisms, which could lead to an increase in the level of high‐tech start‐ups. The prospect for the emergence of new business forms depends in part on the removal of legal and non‐legal barriers. The final section evaluates whether we can project a pattern of regulatory competition in the business organisation context that could prompt lawmakers to innovate by introducing new legal entities.
