Central to student learning and academic success, the school engagement of immigrant children also reflects their adaptation to a primary institution in their new country. Analysis of questionnaire responses of 276,165 fifteen-year-olds (50?% female) and their 10,789 school principals in 41 countries showed that school engagement has distinct, weakly-linked cognitive and emotional components. Native students had weaker attitudes toward school (cognitive engagement) but greater sense of belonging at school (emotional engagement) than immigrant students or students who spoke a foreign language at home. Students with better teacher–student relationships, teacher support or a classroom disciplinary climate often had a greater sense of belonging at school and had better attitudes toward school than other students. While immigrant students often have solid attitudes toward school, teachers can help them feel a greater sense of belonging at school. 相似文献

This article argues that the LDP manufactured its parliamentary dominance in postwar Japan by strategically altering specific facets of the electoral system. More generally, I demonstrate that intraparty politics play a crucial role in determining when and how electoral rules are changed. Despite widespread evidence that the LDP would win more seats under an SMP electoral formula, party leaders were repeatedly blocked from replacing the postwar MMD-SNTV system by intraparty incumbents, who feared that such a change would harm their individual reelection prospects. However, party leaders had greater leeway in altering rules that generated fewer intraparty conflicts. Between 1960 and 1990, the LDP implemented approximately fifty changes to campaign regulations, most of which were aimed at enhancing the incumbency advantage of all rank-and-file MPs. Statistical tests confirm that absent pro-incumbent revisions to the electoral code, the LDP would have succumbed to declining public popularity and lost its majority at least a decade earlier. 相似文献

Syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema palladium, is experiencing a worldwide resurgence. The risk of syphilis infection is particularly high in men who have sex with men (MSM), especially those who are human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)‐positive. Untreated syphilis can lead to rare but severe late‐stage complications, including syphilitic aortitis. Herein, we present an autopsy case of a ruptured thoracic aneurysm that resulted from an undetected case of syphilitic aortitis in an HIV‐positive Japanese MSM with undiagnosed syphilis. Although no syphilitic skin lesions were observed on the body, anatomical changes consistent with a syphilitic etiology were present at the site of the rupture, including medial aortic scarring with “tree‐bark”‐like atherosclerotic plaque. In addition, heart blood was positive for T. palladium in a latex agglutination test. This case highlights for forensic pathologists the importance of recognizing syphilis as a possible underlying cause of sudden death among HIV‐positive MSM. 相似文献

The autopsy findings of an adult patient with 21-hydroxylase deficiency are presented. Genetic analysis of the 21-hydroxylase gene (CYP21A2) was performed for accurate diagnosis of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), and bilateral testicular tumors were characterized. We report a 29-year-old Japanese man who was diagnosed with CAH (21-hydroxylase deficiency) in infancy and had continued steroid therapy until the age of 28. However, for more than one year, he had not been treated for CAH and was found dead. In the medico-legal autopsy findings, both adrenal glands were enlarged, and hypertrophy of adrenal cortices and bilateral testicular tumors positive for melan-A were observed. Genomic DNA was prepared from cervical lymph nodes collected during autopsy, and CYP21A2 was PCR amplified and sequenced directly using newly designed primers. From the morphological findings, the bilateral testicular tumors were considered to be adrenogenital syndrome (TTAGS). Through the whole sequence of CYP21A2, the intron 2 splice mutation (656)A to (656)G was found. TTAGS were thought to be adrenal rests enlarged by ACTH stimulus. From the autopsy findings and the result of genetic analysis, he was diagnosed with the salt-wasting form of 21-hydroxylase deficiency and his cause of death was presumed to be heart failure based on abnormal electrolytes. 相似文献

In order to examine the vital reaction in wounds, catecholamines, serotonin (5-HT) and their metabolites in the incised skin wounds of guinea pigs were analyzed simultaneously by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using electrochemical detection (ECD). The principal changes in the levels of these compounds in vital wounds were as follows: a considerable decrease in norepinephrine (NE) content was observed 12-24 h after injury which persisted to at least 7 days. 3,4-Dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) decreased slightly for up to 30 min and then showed no significant difference compared with postmortem levels. Epinephrine and dopamine were barely detected by the HPLC-ECD method employed. 5-HT concentrations which showed an increase up to 24 h showed maximum levels 800 microns from the wound edge at 10 and 30 min after injury. 5-Hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) was significantly higher than the postmortem level over almost the entire period of these experiments. A 5-HIAA content of at least twice the postmortem level was observed 800 microns from the wound edge of a 10-min-old vital wound. Therefore, 5-HIAA is a likely candidate as a new marker for evaluating the vital reaction in wounds. The vital characteristics of NE, DOPAC, 5-HIAA and 5-HT in 10-min-old wounds persisted for up to 12 h at room temperature after death. These results suggest that the HPLC-ECD method used here is very useful for simultaneous examination of the vital reaction in wounds from the earliest to the later stages of the wound-healing period. 相似文献

The United States seeks conventional military overmatch in the strategic competition with China and Russia through efforts to develop advanced technology for military application and new concept of operations as well as pursue organizational adaptation and human talent pool development. The current article will trace the development of US defense innovation efforts from the Obama administration to the Trump administration and focus on the technological dimension of defense innovation by illustrating ways through which the U.S. Department of Defense is attempting to apply “narrow” artificial intelligence for military purposes such as situational awareness, cyber, military logistics, command and control, and swarm technology and tactics for autonomous unmanned systems. The article will conclude by making two caveats regarding the actual introduction of artificial intelligence into the US battle network, and very briefly point to implications for US allies. 相似文献

In forensic diagnosis, postmortem blood glucose is known to be susceptible to change after death. However, the 1,5‐anhydroglucitol (1,5‐AG) concentrations in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) reflect the mean blood glucose level for a short period of time. In this study, we compared the postmortem 1,5‐AG concentrations in vitreous humor and CSF in 47 subjects to evaluate the utility of this concentration in the vitreous humor for forensic diagnosis. The postmortem 1,5‐AG concentrations in vitreous humor (mean±SD: 20.2 ± 8.7 μg/mL) and CSF (16.8 ± 8.7 μg/mL) did not differ significantly and showed a strong correlation (r2 = 0.87, p < 0.01). These results suggest that the vitreous humor 1,5‐AG concentration provides useful information on the antemortem blood glucose level, in addition to the HbA1c value and the CSF 1,5‐AG concentration. 相似文献

In this paper we use a laboratory experiment toexamine the Pivotal mechanism when applied to a binarydecision on a public project of a fixed size. Wefirst point out that the well-known incentivecompatibility of the Pivotal mechanism is true only in aweak sense; There are always strategies otherthan truth-telling that do no worse for a subject thantruth-telling, in any particular set of circumstances.This weakness of the incentive compatibility ofthe Pivotal mechanism makes it difficult for subjects tounderstand that truth-telling is the unique dominantstrategy for the mechanism, unless they havecomprehensive understanding of the payoff structure,with the result that subjects often do not play thedominant strategy. We suggest that this tendency todepart from the dominant strategy can be overcome byproviding subjects with more information about the payoffstructure. We controlled the level of informationprovision in the laboratory and verified that thestrategies used are closer to the dominant strategywhen more information is provided. Under noinformation provision conditions were outcomes poor,but under ``wide'' provision conditions, in which eachsubject experienced a variety of true personalvaluations of the project, departure from thedominant strategy was smaller in magnitude, and under``deep'' provision conditions, in which detailed payofftables were available to each subject, the rate of useof the dominant strategy increased significantly. 相似文献

The US approach toward China shifted from engagement to competition, and it has coincided with the near-simultaneous breakthrough of advanced technologies in a whole host of areas ranging from artificial intelligence to synthetic biology. As a result, the United States is competing with China to apply these advanced technologies for military and industrial purposes, and, at the same time, competing in third countries over dominance in digital network infrastructure. The current article will illustrate Chinese efforts and US countermeasures that are unfolding in the form of military technological competition, industrial technological competition, and the digital network competition in order to argue that the US shift toward competition is not only about Chinese discriminatory and unreasonable acts, policies and practices related to technology transfer and cyber intrusions, but a contest for supremacy over the next generation of military, economic and information/data dominance that could impact the relative legitimacy of political and socio-economic system of the two states. 相似文献
