British cultural diplomacy and the cold war: 1946-61

Why was Britain so reluctant to use the tools of cultural diplomacy for the cold war? First, the habits of administration and the effects of war encouraged a compartmentalization of effort. There was no obvious point at which to construct an overview or a strategy which could match the Soviet enterprise. Second, the dissolution of the empire exposed the racism and ethnic tensions which had existed in both the United Kingdom and its colonies. Policymakers appeared to be pursuing incompatible objectives. They found it difficult to think about post-colonial influence except in terms of a policy for the Commonwealth, but also to construct such a line of action. The insubstantiality of cultural diplomacy is part of the trauma of losing great power status. Arab nationalism was the major force which prompted government into action on cultural affairs. Commitments were made before the military operations in Suez.

Death by greyhound.

We present the case of a man who was last seen leaving to feed his greyhound dogs. He was found dead lying in a yard just outside the gate to one of the dog pens. Holes were present in the fence on both sides of the gate. The holes were of sufficient size to allow the passage of the head and neck of a greyhound to the shoulders. To open the gate one had to bend down to unfasten a latch 45 cm above ground level. Leaning down to unfasten the latch brought one into close proximity to the holes on either side of the gate. The scene and clothing appeared undisturbed. Autopsy (K.A.L.) revealed the cause of death to be blunt throat trauma. The throat trauma was of marked degree and consistent with at least a single heavy crushing injury directed from the front and somewhat below. In addition there were a series of almost vertical light abrasions on one side of the neck. There were minimal injuries to the rest of the body. There were no injuries specific for assault. In an attempt to explain the almost vertical abrasions on the side of the neck, the scene was re-examined by the pathologist. This revealed loose wire strands on the gate post. It is consistent that a fall against this area could account for the almost vertical abrasions on one side of the neck.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)     

Econometric analysis of factors influencing crime on the campus

A statistical model is presented and described to test the hypothesis that crime on university campuses bears a systematic and statistically identifiable relationship to a number of independent variables. Of the independent variables tested, the proportion of students living in dormitories and proximity to urban areas with high unemployment seem to influence the amount of crime on campus.     

Promoting positive youth development by examining the career and educational aspirations of African American males: implications for designing educational programs

African American males experience poor academic performance, high absenteeism at school, and are at increased risk of being involved in violence than other racial groups. Given that the educational outlook for African American males appears bleak, it is important to assess the aspirations of these adolescent males in order to find the gap between aspirations and educational attainment. In order to promote positive development within this population, it is essential that factors that affect African American males be identified. A survey was administered to male students attending elementary, middle, and high schools in a local school district. A cross-sectional study was conducted to examine the career and educational aspirations of African American males. A total of 473 males were surveyed: 45% African American, 22% Caucasian, 13% biracial, and 19% Other (including Asian American, Hispanic, Native American). The results revealed that African American males aspired to attend college at the same rate as other ethnic groups. Also, African American males were more likely to aspire to be professional athletes than males from other ethnic groups. Important factors to consider when designing a program are discussed as well as future research and limitations.     

Assessing the health behaviors of African American emerging adults

The purpose of this article was to assess the overall health behaviors of African American emerging adults who live in a Midwestern city. Two hundred participants, ages 18-25, completed a 129-item survey. Results indicate that African American emerging adults are engaged in relatively healthy behaviors (i.e., physical activity, low substance use). The results also showed that within the emerging adult developmental period, there are differences in behavior for those who are in the younger (18-20) versus those that are older (21-25) in the developmental period. Limitations, future research, and implications for practice will also be discussed.
