A Reappraisal of Classical Economic Nationalism and Economic Liberalism

The mischaracterization of the works of the early Economic Nationalists and early Economic Liberals has obscured both the variety within each school and the connections between them. Many scholars have written about misinterpretations of Adam Smith's ideas, but few have corrected similar misinterpretations of the ideas of the leading Economic Nationalists, Alexander Hamilton and Friedrich List. List and Hamilton have been falsely portrayed as mercantilistic advocates of autarky and unlimited protectionism. A comparison of their works with those of the leading early Liberals: Adam Smith, David Ricardo, and John Stuart Mill, indicates a more complex pattern. Hamilton's and List's ideas, ratherthan being the antithesis of Liberalism, are a synthesis of it and mercantilism. This reappraisal indicates that some of the more controversial aspects of Economic Nationalism, such as its promotion of autarky, are not an essential part of this school of thought.     

Delimitation of the time of death by immunohistochemical detection of thyroglobulin

To improve the possibilities to delimit the time of death after longer laytime it was examined if this is possible by immunohistochemical detection of thyroglobulin. The results show that in our examination material the colloid and the follicular cells of the thyroid glands of up to 5-day-old corpses produce a positive immunoreaction towards thyroglobulin in all cases whereas none of the corpses older than 13 days show such a reaction. This means that in case of a negative immunoreaction the time of death can be assumed to lie more than 6 days before the autopsy. The fact that a negative immunoreaction occurrs consistently after 13 days leads to the conclusion that when thyroglobulin has been stained in a specimen, the death of the respective person must lie a maximum of 12 days earlier, whereby these time-limits may change in considerably different surrounding conditions.     

The Parenting Coordinator as Peacemaker and Peacebuilder

Parenting coordinators serve as case managers in high‐conflict families with the goal of protecting the children from parental conflict. Parenting coordinators are peacemakers and peacebuilders who identify and help set up structures in the family to support peace between the parents. The family court should promote and develop equipoise in litigants and professionals. Because parents who continue in conflict postdecree often have difficulty empathizing with their co‐parents and with their children, they might benefit from meditation training to increase mindfulness, empathy, and compassion. Self‐compassion training could also increase well‐being and more effective co‐parenting and aid in building peace in the family.

• Family court judges can work with parenting coordinators in a team approach, in a manner similar to what occurs in problem‐solving courts, to benefit the families and the judicial system.

Controlling the Instruments of War: The Role of the UN in Disarmament

The focus of this essay is the role the United Nations may be able to play in the year ahead in disarmament and arms control. It is argued that so far the UN, in spite of many attempts made, has played only a peripheral role. The ambiguity of its role in disarmament is due to the deferent perceptions that states maintain about is role in the global disarmament machinery. The authors suggest that there should be an agreement on a comprehensive world structure for negotiating disarmament wherein the UN may play a role approved by the entire world community.
