Political organizations frequently attempt to recruit sympathetic citizens to support their causes. Doing so requires communicating credibility—that is, persuading potential new supporters that they can actually achieve the goals they set out to achieve. In this article we investigate two of the predominant kinds of information that organizations might use to establish credibility: retrospective information (about past successes) and prospective information (about future plans). Using one field experiment and one survey experiment, we find that retrospective information fails to increase people’s willingness to spend scarce resources supporting political organizations. We find that this occurs because information about past successes suggests that the organization can succeed without any additional help. In contrast, we find that prospective information motivates new participants to become active. 相似文献

AbstractSince the Soviet Union’s collapse, Ukraine, Georgia and Russia have faced the challenge of taking their positions in the politics of international law as part of their transformation processes. Strong dynamics of conflict have shaped these states’ politico-legal actions and interactions, for example, the Russo–Georgian War, the annexation of Crimea and the armed conflict in East Ukraine. This essay explores whether, how and why Georgia, Ukraine and Russia ‘speak’ international law in international politics differently. Transactional theories of development suggest that displaying high levels of antisocial behavior early in life and persistently
over time causes disruption in multiple life domains, which in turn places individuals at risk for negative life outcomes.
We used longitudinal data from 1,137 primarily African American urban youth (49.1% female) to determine whether different
trajectories of aggressive and disruptive behavior problems were associated with a range of negative life outcomes in young
adulthood. General growth mixture modeling was used to classify the youths’ patterns of aggressive–disruptive behavior across
elementary school. These trajectories were then used to predict early sexual activity, early pregnancy, school dropout, unemployment,
and drug abuse in young adulthood. The trajectories predicted the number but not type of negative life outcomes experienced.
Girls with the chronic high aggression–disruption (CHAD) pattern experienced more negative outcomes than girls with consistently
moderate levels, who were at greater risk than nonaggressive–nondisruptive girls. Boys with CHAD and boys with an increasing
pattern had equal levels of risk for experiencing negative outcomes. The findings are consistent with transactional models

Ethnic and American Identity as Predictors of Self-Esteem Among African American,Latino, and White Adolescents 总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12
In order to examine ethnic and American identity as predictors of self-esteem among adolescents, we surveyed 669 American-born high school students (372 Latinos, 232 African Americans, and 65 Whites). Participants completed measures of self-esteem, ethnic identity, American identity, attitudes toward other groups, and demographic variables. Multiple regression analyses of self-esteem were carried out separately for each ethnic group, using ethnic and American identity, other-group attitudes, gender, age, socioeconomic status, and grade point average as predictors. Results indicated that for all groups ethnic identity was a significant predictor of self-esteem. For the White students only, American identity was a strong predictor of self-esteem and was highly correlated with ethnic identity. Other predictors varied across ethnic groups. Although ethnic identity was a significant predictor of self-esteem, it accounted for a relatively small proportion of the variance, suggesting the importance of other influences on self-esteem. 相似文献
