Ex-Offenders, the Labour Market and the New Public Administration

Policy makers are increasingly recognizing the importance of helping ex-offenders into employment. This article outlines the disadvantages faced by those with a criminal record in the labour market and evaluates several approaches to meeting the needs of ex-offenders seeking work. It finds that, despite recent policy developments, the changing nature of British public administration is undermining the ability of practitioners to respond appropriately to the needs of ex-offenders. The article concludes that the real concern of policy makers is to show that they are doing something about the social context of criminal behaviour while at the same time drawing attention away from the increasingly centralized and authoritarian nature of our public agencies.     

The sexing of bloodstains by testosterone: total protein ratio determination

A simple method for the extraction of testosterone from bloodstains followed by its measurement by radioimmunoassay is described. Complete discrimination of males and females was achieved with measured bloodstains as small as 40 microliters. With stains of unknown volume the total protein content of the stain was determined as an internal reference level. Using the testosterone/protein ratio unequivocal identification was possible for 75% of the stains from males and 50% from females.     

Elder abuse in nursing homes: Prevention and resolution strategies and barriers

Recent concern about elder abuse prompted a great deal of research on the characteristics and risk factors for abuse. Most of this research, however, centered on the abuse of older persons living in a community-based setting. Much less research examined abuse occurring in nursing homes. Using routine activities theory as a guide, this article reports on a survey of seventy-six nursing home administrators with specific attention given to the elder abuse prevention and response strategies cited by nursing home administrators. Obstacles impeding successful prevention and intervention efforts were also considered.
