After more than a dozen years of activity, some 161 indictments, 64 arrests, and 47 surrenders, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) has accomplished a good deal in terms of its primary task of prosecution. Nonetheless, there is still much debate over the state of transitional justice in the Balkans and what has been accomplished. We cannot forget that the ICTY was created with broad political and social purposes in mind, specifically to contribute to the restoration and maintenance of peace. Using a comparative framework, we develop benchmarks of transitional justice outcomes to examine these vague but important and ambitious goals. Although conventional wisdom says that the ICTY is used instrumentally by Balkan leaders who are fundamentally opposed to the court??s existence, we demonstrate that there is also evidence of broader political and social change throughout the region. Thus, we contend that Balkan countries have indeed moved beyond mere prosecution. 相似文献

The federal government often works through nonprofit intermediaries to reach and empower communities in the United States. One increasingly popular policy strategy is to offer grant funding to intermediary organizations in an effort to strengthen communities. Funded intermediaries are tasked with building the capacity of faith‐based and community organizations at the local level, but the policy theory that informs these programs does not specify how these capacity‐building efforts will lead to stronger communities. Missing is a middle‐range implementation theory that links inputs to community‐level changes through the actions of an intermediary. Derived from empirical case study evidence using process‐tracing analysis, the theory of the community‐integrated intermediary posited in this article helps fill that gap. 相似文献

As research on adolescent crowds has increased over the past several decades, researchers appear to be confident in their
claims of the consequences of crowd membership, even suggesting targeted interventions. This review of the various methods
used to identify adolescents’ crowd membership suggests that this confidence may be misplaced. There are diverse methodologies
used in this research area that examine different samples of adolescents belonging to each crowd. Social-type rating methods,
self-identification methods, grouping by adolescent behaviors or characteristics, and ethnographic or other qualitative methods
should be accompanied by greater specificity in terminology to alert researchers to the various phenomena being studied (i.e.,
“reputational crowd,” “interactional crowd,” “behavioral crowd,” “affiliation crowd”). Additionally, studies comparing the
various self-identification approaches and peer ratings are needed, along with reliability studies of peer ratings. More attention
to specific methodology to determine crowd membership and its stability will aid the design of theoretical models of adolescent
crowds and contribute to developmental outcome research.

This mixed-methods exploratory study examined the diverse content and situated context of White adolescents’ racial-ethnic
identities. The sample consisted of 781 9th–12th grade White adolescents from three New England schools, which varied in racial
and economic make-up. Open-ended responses provided a range of thematic categories regarding the importance of race-ethnicity
to the adolescents’ identities, representing the diverse ideologies of White adolescents’ explanations, ranging from colorblind
claims to ethnic pride. This study also found significant relationships between racial-ethnic identity importance (centrality)
and parents’ education for White adolescents. These findings highlight the diversity of White adolescents’ understanding of
their racial-ethnic identities and the importance of context in shaping racial-ethnic centrality.

This investigation examined the precursors of adolescents’ participation in sport and music activities in the United States
by testing a developmental model across 7 years. Data were drawn from youth questionnaires in the Childhood and Beyond Study
(92% European American; N = 594). Findings suggest that patterns of participation across a 3-year period in elementary school predict adolescents’
participation through their motivational beliefs. Specifically, children who participated in an activity, children who participated
consistently across multiple years, and children who were highly active had higher adolescent motivational beliefs 4 years
later than their peers. These motivational beliefs, in turn, positively predicted adolescents’ participation 1 year later.
Cross-domain analyses suggest that children typically maintain their orientation toward sports and music (e.g., high music-low
sport orientation, not oriented toward either domain) as they age. These findings highlight the consistency in children’s
leisure pursuits and interests from childhood through adolescence. 相似文献
