Evaluating integrative services in edge-of-care work

Children living on ‘the edge-of-care’ are typically known to local safeguarding authorities and are considered likely to face risks to their safety. Many are subject to a child protection plan and/or involved in ‘pre-proceedings’ processes. A growing number of their parents face (un)diagnosed mental health difficulties as well as economic and social precarity. This article draws on a mixed methods evaluation of a pilot service in the East of England offering a therapeutically led attachment-based intervention for families. The service cross-cuts health and social care, allowing psychologists and psychotherapists to work alongside social workers and other practitioners. The evaluation examined psychological and safeguarding outcomes and explored practitioner perspectives. A key outcome was that 85.4% of families were enabled to remain, or reunite with their child, compared with an estimated 50% of ‘edge-of-care’ cases nationally. This supports the need for similarly oriented interventions that could help lower the incidence of child removals.     

Pornography: Reflections upon past and current issues

Abstract

Summary: This article reviews historical and recent - and differing - responses from feminists in the developed and in the developing worlds, to the production and use of pornographic materials. It explores some of the possible reasons for changes in feminist analyses and posits future directions for feminist responses to pornographic materials, based on recent contributions to the debates.

Sibling Proactive and Reactive Aggression in Adolescence

We describe sibling proactive and reactive aggression in middle and late adolescence. Participants were 8th (n?=?303, M _age?=?13.74 years, SD?=?.59) and 12th (n?=?300, M _age?=?17.73 years, SD?=?.56) grade adolescents who completed an in-school survey. Findings revealed that these adolescents were significantly more likely to engage in reactive than proactive aggression with their closest-aged sibling. However, 8th grade adolescents reported greater aggression toward their closest-aged sibling than did 12th grade adolescents. In addition, sex composition of the sibling dyad moderated the association between sibling relationship quality (i.e., warmth and rivalry) and both proactive and reactive aggression indicating unique links for brother-brother and older sister-younger brother pairs.     

Pig-mentation: postmortem iris color change in the eyes of Sus scrofa

Experienced forensic pathologists and examiners may be familiar with the phenomenon of postmortem iris color change; however, only Knight, Simpson's forensic medicine, Arnold, London, 1997; Ref. 1 and Saukko and Knight, Knight's forensic pathology, 3rd ed., Arnold, London, 2004; Ref. 2 have referred to it in the literature, and to date, there have been no published scientific research studies on this taphonomic artifact. A controlled experiment was conducted of postmortem changes to isolated Sus scrofa eyes. The eyes (n = 137) were separated into three groups and each sample was observed for 3-day postmortem at a different temperature. In addition, a Sus scrofa head was obtained to observe postmortem changes of eyes in situ. All isolated blue eyes in the experiment, at room temperature and higher, changed to brown/black within 48 h. The in situ blue eye, at room temperature, turned brown/black within 72 h. If iris color consistently changes postmortem in humans, then this taphonomic artifact must be incorporated into victim identification protocol, including disaster victim identification software, and autopsy reports to prevent inaccurate victim identification and inappropriate exclusion from the identification process.     

Role call: sex,gender roles,and intimate partner violence

ABSTRACT

Intimate partner violence (IPV) continues to be viewed in gendered and heteronormative ways. Stanziani, Cox, and Coffey (2018, Adding insult to injury: Sex, sexual orientation, and juror decision-making in a case of intimate partner violence. Journal of Homosexuality, 65(10), 1325–1350) presented participants with a case of alleged IPV while manipulating the sex and sexual orientation of the aggressor/victim dyad. Results suggested participants view violence perpetrated by a man against a woman most abhorrently. The current study replicated and expanded that study, exploring how gender role beliefs influence participant decision-making. Female participants held more adverse attitudes towards IPV when a male assaulted a female. Further, participant gender role beliefs influenced decision-making. Specifically, males who endorsed higher levels of hegemonic masculinity perceived the crime to be less serious, while females who endorsed the same beliefs perceived the defendant as less likely to benefit from treatment. Overall, results suggest individual beliefs regarding gender roles and masculinity may influence their perceptions of IPV, regardless of the gender and sexual orientation of the aggressor and victim.

Local culture and governmental change: The endurance of culture in the face of structural change

Abstract: As part of a larger exploration of local civic culture, this article seeks to answer the following questions: Is there one culture across policy arenas? Is there a unified perspective on civic culture? Do cities with demographic and ethnic diversity have a single culture? Recent research has focused, or perhaps re‐focused, attention on the importance of culture in determining public policy at the local level. These efforts have classified different types of local culture in an attempt to develop an operationally sound and replicable definition of civic culture that can also delineate cities based on their cultural profile. The ultimate goal of such research is to explore how civic cultures affect public policies to not only provide researchers with a theoretical understanding of how communities are governed but also to identify the forces affecting ultimate policy choices. Using a triangulation of methods technique, this research employed a citizen phone survey along with five years of élite interviews in the City of Ottawa, Ontario. The focus on Ottawa provides an understanding of civic culture in light of significant governmental structural change, namely the provincially mandated amalgamation of seven cities, four townships, and the Ottawa‐Carleton Regional Municipality in 2001. Sommaire: Dans le cadre d'une étude plus approfondie de la culture municipale locale, le présent article cherche à répondre aux questions suivantes: Y a‐t‐il une culture propre à toutes les sphères de politiques? Existe‐t‐il une perspective unifiée sur la culture municipale? Est‐ce que les villes qui ont une diversité démographique et ethnique ont une seule et même culture? Des recherches récentes ont porté leur attention ‐ ou peut‐être porté leur attention à nouveau ‐ sur l'importance de la culture pour déterminer la politique publique à l'échelle locale. Ces efforts ont classé différents types de culture locale, afin d'essayer de mettre au point une définition de la culture municípale valable, pouvant être reproduite dans la pratique et qui puisse aussi délimiter les villes d'après leur profil culturel. Le but ultime d'une telle recherche est d'examiner à fond comment les cultures municipales influent sur les politiques publiques. Non seulement elles fournissent aux chercheurs une compré‐hension théorique de la manière dont les communautés sont gouvernées, mais elles permettent d'identifier les forces qui influent sur les choix politiques ultimes. Utilisant une méthode de triangulation, cette recherche a été menée par le biais d'un sondage téléphonique de citoyens ainsi que d'interviews de membres de l'élite dans la ville d'Ottawa, Ontario, sur une période de cinq années. Le fait de se pencher sur Ottawa fournit une compréhension de la culture municipale à la lumière d'importants changements structuraux gouvernementaux, à savoir le regroupement prescrit par la province de sept villes, quatre cantons et la municipalité régionale d'Ottawa‐Carleton en 2001.
