This essay outlines a conceptual framework for discussing success in interactive conflict resolution and in conflict resolution efforts more generally. It first proposes reasons why evaluation is crucial for improving practice. An overview of the new framework and its development are then presented. This gives the reader a window into its construction and some of the challenges of evaluation in conflict intervention processes. Next, the uses of the framework are explained as well as how its use helps to change the debate about successful processes. Finally, this article discusses how the theoretician, practitioner, and researcher-evaluator can use this framework for their own purposes, and how evaluating processes based upon their goals helps to improve the theory, practice, and research of the field.  相似文献

The estimation of stature from of a variety of bones is an important aspect of forensic work. In order to obtain reliable results, it is important to have comparative data obtained from the same population group as the skeletal remains. However, lack of up to date information on the population groups of Southern Europe makes the estimation of stature from bones in this area subject to possible error. In this study, the stature of 104 healthy adults from Spain was measured, and an anteroposterior teleradiograph of the right lower and the right upper limb of every subject in the study was made in order to measure the lengths of the femur, tibia, fibula, humerus, cubitus and ulna. Pearson's regression formulae were obtained for both limbs. In males, we found the femur to be the most accurate predictor of stature (R = 0.851), whereas in females best results were obtained with the tibia (R = 0.876).  相似文献

A preliminary study was conducted to assess the capability of a new alcohol-based tissue fixative, GenoFix, to preserve DNA from biopsy tissues stored at room temperature and/or -20 degrees C in a freezer, for subsequent short tandem repeat (STR) DNA typing analysis. Fresh human smooth muscle samples were stored at room temperature in GenoFix for one month and up to one year and seven months before being processed using the megaplex STR systems, AmpFlSTR Profiler Plus and AmpFlSTR COfiler. Alternatively, muscle tissues in GenoFix were placed at -20 degrees C in a freezer for up to 3 1/2 years following two to three months in the fixative at room temperature. DNA analysis was also carried out on tissues stored in GenoFix for one month at room temperature and subsequently paraffin-embedded and stored at room temperature for four years. The AmpFlSTR Profiler Plus and AmpFlSTR COfiler STR profiles produced, using DNA extracted from all fixed tissue samples, were of very good quality. The fluorescent signals were well balanced across the nine STR loci or six loci comprised in the megaplexes surveyed and profiles showed no differences with those observed for the control blood of the respective donor patients. Continuous exposure to GenoFix at room temperature (up to one year and seven months) did not compromise the STR typing analysis of the fixed tissues. No adverse effects were noted on the STR typeability of tissues fixed with GenoFix and stored at -20 degrees C in a freezer for up to 3 1/2 years. STR profiles generated from the paraffin-embedded tissues fixed in GenoFix were of excellent quality. This preliminary study suggests that GenoFix can be used to store tissue samples at room temperature for up to one year and seven months or at -20 degrees C in a freezer for longer storage (up to 3 1/2 years). This new and odorless tissue fixative promotes tissue and DNA preservation in a very effective manner and as such may prove useful in criminal investigations or mass disaster identifications carried out in remote locations and in which a small or large number of tissue samples are collected for further analyses.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate all child homicides for the 25-year period, 1970-1994 in Finland and to analyse the specific characteristics of the filicide cases. A total of 292 child homicides occurred during this period. In 201 (69%) cases the offender was a parent or a stepparent of the child. Altogether, 173 (59%) of the victims were boys and 119 (41%) were girls. For the closer examination of the filicide cases we excluded the neonaticide and homicide-suicide cases. Consequently, we report on 70 filicide victims. Of these victims, 42 (60%) were boys and 28 (40%) were girls. Twenty six (37%) of the children were killed before the age of 1 year and 53 (79%) before the age of 5 years. The offender was the mother in 43 (61%) cases and the father or the stepfather in 26 (37%) cases. The victims of the mothers were younger than those of the fathers. The most frequent causes of death were head injuries, drowning and suffocation. The most common means of assault were battering, drowning and strangulation. One in two of the fatally battered children had a documented history of previous abuse.  相似文献

The recreational use and abuse of Cannabis is continuously increasing in Switzerland. Cannabinoids are very often detected alone or in combination with other drugs in biological samples taken from drivers suspected of driving under the influence of drugs. Moreover, they are also frequently found in blood specimens from people involved in various medico-legal events, e.g. muggings, murders, rapes and working accidents as well. In order to assess the influence of Cannabis exposure on man behavior and performances, it is often needed to estimate the time of Cannabis use. For that purpose two mathematical models have been set up by Huestis and coworkers. These models are based on cannabinoids concentrations in plasma. Because plasma samples are rarely available for forensic determinations in our laboratory, it could be useful to assess the time-laps since Cannabis use through these models from whole blood values. One prerequisite to the use of these models from whole blood values is the knowledge of the plasma to whole blood concentrations distribution ratios of cannabinoids. In this respect, the Delta(9)-THC, 11-OH-Delta(9)-THC and Delta(9)-THCCOOH concentrations were measured in plasma and whole blood taken from eight volunteers who smoke Cannabis on a regular basis. Cannabinoids levels were also determined in "serum" and whole blood samples taken from six corpses. The values of the plasma to whole blood distribution ratios were found to be very similar and their individual coefficient of variation relatively low suggesting that plasma levels could be calculated from whole blood concentrations taken into account a multiplying factor of 1.6. The data obtained postmortem suggest that the distribution of cannabinoids between whole blood and "serum" is scattered over a larger range of values than those determined from living people and that more cannabinoids (mean value of the serum/whole blood concentrations ratios=2.4) can be recovered from the "serum" fraction. The successful use of the mathematical models of Huestis and coworkers may, therefore, rely in part upon the selection of the appropriate blood sample, i.e. plasma. When plasma is not available, whole blood values could be considered with some caution taken into account a multiplying factor of 1.6 to calculate plasma concentrations from blood values. In the case of blood samples taken after death, the use of these models to assess the time of Cannabis use is not recommended.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to find out the degree of satisfaction with life among adolescents with immigrant background and the factors that may be related to the level of satisfaction with life among them. The study sample consisted of 313 Angolan, Cape Verdean, and Indian adolescents (mean age = 5.00 years; SD = 1.88). The mean duration of sojourn in Portugal for the sample was 8.2 years (SD = 4.8). They were asked to fill a questionnaire with several measures, including demographic information, satisfaction with life, identity, in-group and out-group social interaction, stressful experience acculturation, perceived discrimination, mastery, self-esteem, and symptoms outcome. A control group involving 363 Portuguese youth were also included in the study. There were significant differences only between Portuguese and Angolan adolescents, in terms of level of life satisfaction. Portuguese adolescents were found to be more satisfied than Angolan adolescents from immigrant families. Whereas demographic factors accounted for just 6% of the variance explained, demographic and psychosocial factors accounted for 31% of the variance explained. Mastery was the most important factor related to life satisfaction. Gender, self-esteem, and living in an ethnically homogeneous neighborhood were also found to be predictors of satisfaction with life.  相似文献

Determination of age at the time of death based on the observation of cranial sutures has led to numerous studies with sometimes contradictory results. The initial hypothesis being that suture closure is part of an age-related physiological process, the conflicting results have been interpreted by various authors as secondary to the choice of sutures, under the co-existing influence of pathological factors or genetic factors, or even independent of age. Despite these differences, macroscopic methods remain much used in anthropology and in forensic medicine. In our work, we evaluated the value of the degree of closure of the frontosphenoidal suture in estimating age at death of mature subjects, with the secondary objective of establishing a linear regression which could be used in routine practice. The study concerned bone specimens from individuals whose age, sex and medical history were known. Macroscopic observation was carried out on the ectocranial and endocranial sides according to four stages of closure previously defined. 290 sutures were taken from a population of whom two-thirds were men. The method can be repeated and reproduced and the regression established shows the confidence range for average error to be +/-1.5 years. While this result is of interest in terms of precision in prediction for a group of people, the prediction range is too great (+/-23 years) to be applicable to a single individual as part of a forensic procedure.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is to propose a soil characterization methodology for forensic use, based on physical (textural and spectroscopic analyses), chemical (extractions with hydrofluoric acid, ammonium oxalate, sodium dithionite-citrate-bicarbonate and NaOH solution) and mineralogical (thermal analyses and X-ray diffraction) analyses. The study was carried out in the State of Paraná, Brazil, in three neighborhoods of Curitiba city and in two cities within the Curitiba Metropolitan Region. In order to verify the similarity between samples, four composite samples (repetitions) were prepared in each of the five studied sites. It was obtained a great number of quantitative variables (56) from a reduced amount of soil sample (1g). The variables selected from the chemical extractions (16) were more precise in grouping similar samples (same horizon and sampling site) as well as in separating samples collected in different horizons or sites. Seven distinct groups were formed, each with high intragroup similarity, but the unexpected dispersion of two samples (from a total of 40 samples) reduced the distinction of three other studied groups. The placement of the two samples in a different group and the higher dispersion (24 samples) for samples collected in the city of Curitiba are due to the great pedological homogeneity of this area (physical-chemical horizon characteristics, soil color and parent material). The methodology used in this work (analytical method and data treatment) presents high potential for forensic studies and can be easily validated for other areas.  相似文献

Headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) is assessed as an alternative to liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) currently used for 3,4-methylenedioxymethampethamine (MDMA) profiling. Both methods were compared evaluating their performance in discriminating and classifying samples. For this purpose 62 different seizures were analysed using both extraction techniques followed by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). A previously validated method provided data for HS-SPME, whereas LLE data were collected applying a harmonized methodology developed and used in the European project CHAMP. After suitable pre-treatment, similarities between sample pairs were studied using the Pearson correlation. Both methods enable to distinguish between samples coming from the same pre-tabletting batches and samples coming from different pre-tabletting batches. This finding emphasizes the use of HS-SPME as an effective alternative to LLE, with additional advantages such as sample preparation and a solvent-free process.  相似文献
