In this paper we use a size and industry matched sample of over 1,900 UK and US businesses for the period 2004–05 in the manufacturing
and business services sectors to analyse the relative “strength” of the university–industry ecosystems in which these firms
operate in the two economies. Our analysis shows that in both countries universities per se play a quantitatively smaller
role as a source of knowledge for business innovation than either the business sector itself or a variety of organisations
intermediating between the university and business sectors. Our analysis reveals a much more diffuse university–industry ecosystem
in the UK in which a higher proportion of businesses claim links external to themselves in their pursuit of knowledge for
innovation and a higher proportion report directly connecting with universities. US firms are more likely to access knowledge
through a combination of business and intermediary sources and are less likely to have established formal collaborative or
partnership agreements in the 3 years prior to the survey. We also find, however, that a higher proportion of US firms place
a very high value on the connections they have with universities and are much more likely to commit resources to support such
innovation related university interactions. A similar pattern of diffuse but weaker links characterise the supply of public
sector financial assistance for innovation in our sample firms. UK firms are more likely to be in receipt of assistance, but
receive far less per firm in absolute terms and relative to their R&D expenditures. It appears that the UK university–industry

In this paper, we employ resource-based and institutional theories to examine the current role of business schools in academic
entrepreneurship. In particular, we seek to identify and understand the challenges to business schools contributing to the
transfer of knowledge to enable academic entrepreneurship. Employing a case-based method, we present evidence from 42 interviews
with technology transfer officers (TTOs), business school deans, business school entrepreneurship faculty and scientists in
eight UK universities. Our empirical analysis is focused on analyzing the challenges arising from the links between business
schools and three other principal stakeholders of academic entrepreneurship (i.e., the university management, TTOs and academics
in science departments). The findings suggest that in addition to concerns about the nature of their human capital, the ability
of business schools to fill knowledge gaps in the development of academic entrepreneurship is constrained by the institutional
structures of universities which influence: the strategies of the university and the business school; links between business
schools, TTOs and scientists; and process issues relating to differences in language and codes, goal differences, incentives
and rewards, expertise differences and the content of interactions. We conclude that if business schools are to play a more
prominent role in academic entrepreneurship there is a need to develop internal university processes and policies that promote
rather than hinder internal knowledge flows between business schools, TTOs and science departments. 相似文献

NGOs play an increasingly important role in humanitarian work, and the impact of their activities is often non-neutral in relation to the conflicts which underlie crises. This was the case in the Rwanda crisis, during which some NGOs lent support to the forces of the genocidal Rwandan regime through their choice of where to work; the type and organisation of support offered; and some of the public statements made by NGO representatives. The term 'multi-level governance' synthesizes the overlapping nature of the European Union and implicit theories of EU-state-subnational interdependence. Although stimulating as an overriding framework, the concept's explanatory powers are not self-evident. Using illustrations from implementation of the structural funds within three French regions, this article endeavours to operationalize multi-level governance by concentrating upon what it could help to study and what it might contribute in terms of analysing change. Black people, as a group, have been the victims of exclusion in almost all areas of the dominant American cultural life. Black women, in particular, have suffered because of race and sex. The result of these oppressions has been a general cultural silence and invisibility of all black people. Challenges to the racial status quo reached momentous dimensions in the 1960s—the era of the black revolution, and touched all areas of the national life in the U.S.A. However, when the smoke cleared, black women discovered that despite their efforts in the struggle, few of them reaped rewards. In the wake of the women's liberation movement that followed, the general consensus among women of color was that black meant black men and women meant white women. This is an unsatisfactory state of affairs, and one which black women have vowed to fight against. The university is one of the arenas for this confrontation. This paper looks at the experiences of one black woman in a prestigious Midwestern university and documents the nature of her experiences as a double minority. She voices the opinion that black women intend to struggle on to their rightful places in the academy. They can't go back, and they aim to stay. 相似文献

AbstractIn recent years research into child sexual offending has highlighted “grooming” as an important part of the offence chain. Topics that have come to dominate the research agenda have focused on the offenders' perspectives, psychological models of offending behaviour and how child sex offenders (CSOs) are managed and treated in local communities (for example through Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements). Whilst these studies are extremely important, one area that has suffered from a lack of research and visible debate is how victims, their families and local communities experience grooming in situ and on a day-to-day basis. Using observational, interview and document data collected from an ethnography of a south-east coast community that houses a number of CSOs, this article examines the strategies used by strangers and acquaintances when grooming the local environment, significant others and children. Importantly, these grooming experiences are articulated from the perspective of the victims and their families. In doing so, the article discusses the implications that these experiences have for understanding offender–victim behaviours. 相似文献

There has been considerable debate in recent years about the new forms of labour market policy developing in advanced industrial states, and especially the emergence of neo-liberal workfare regimes in the US and the UK. Conceptually, this has been viewed as part of a new form of employment regulation, based upon compulsion and coercion within a shift towards more flexible labour markets. Whilst in the UK policy might be conceived at the national level, it is at the local scale, within particular contexts, that the new employment initiatives are played out and their impact needs to be assessed. In this paper, attention is drawn to the importance of local labour control regimes, focusing upon how labour market institutions and mechanisms of regulation are developed within particular local historical contexts. In contrast to some accounts, the importance is emphasised of inherited social institutions and practices, both within the workplace and beyond in the sphere of social reproduction, in the development of local labour market regimes. Against more top–down narratives, this leads also to highlighting the importance of local autonomy and action in the emergence of new local labour control regimes as such proposed perspectives rejoin community-based practices with more conventionally perceived work-based struggles. The arguments are illustrated through an examination of a specific set of labour market programmes established to ‘deal’ with the after-effects of deindustrialisation in the city of Glasgow and in particular the need to manage those displaced by the shift from a productivist economy to one increasingly geared towards services and consumption. 相似文献
