Mass media and politics in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region

Before the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong from Britain to the People's Republic of China, many people of Hong Kong and observers were pessimistic regarding freedom of the press in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). After July 1, 1997, however, press freedom in the HKSAR appears to persist and it seems as if the optimistic scenario of media autonomy has been neglected by many Hong Kong residents and observers. Nevertheless, media autonomy in the HKSAR is dependent on a number of factors. This article suggests that a contingency perspective can be adopted to comprehend the dynamics of media autonomy in the HKSAR.     

Patriarchy in the Balkans: Temporal and cross-cultural approaches

The article deals with the history, distribution and ideology of Balkan patriarchy; the Balkan agnatic kinship system; and with the most significant patriarchal family structures. The demographic analyses are based primarily on the Serbian state census of 1863 (the first available census listing women) and the Federal Yugoslav census data for 1948, 1953, and 1961, coupled with archival and field data for the central Serbian village of Oras?ac for 1818–1975. Balkan patriarchy has much in common with similar well-documented systems in Asia and the Middle East. The Balkan situation was differentiated, however, in that this system existed both within and outside formal state structures. The patriarchal ideology shaped kinship and family patterns, as well as coresidential patterns within households. These patterns reproduced patriarchal structures, but the full reproduction of the system was constrained by economic circumstances.

内蒙古作为西部经济欠发达的民族地区,其事业单位分类改革面临更多复杂的矛盾和问题。本文以内蒙古鄂尔多斯市和包头市为例,比较系统和深入地分析和总结了内蒙古事业单位分类改革中面临的深层次问题及其启示。本文的主要观点是,在深入贯彻党的十七大精神的新形势下推进事业单位分类改革,必须有新的视野和新的思考,尤其要在根本思考的基础上进行总体设计和全面推进。     

Deception and Fear in Politically Oppressive Contexts: Its Trickle-Down Effect on Families

The mystified reality, restricted options, and inherent risks of living in countries under a repressive political regime trigger survival tactics that reduce individual's reliance on social support, as well as semantic and cognitive restrictions and alternative codes, and silences that translate into symptoms. While this is the case for the average citizen, it is even more pronounced in individuals and families directly touched by the repressive apparatus. These processes are discussed and two clinical examples are provided to illustrate them.
