Clive Bean 《Political Behavior》1991,13(3):253-283
This paper examines a model of political participation and political protest that includes the several well-established modes of orthodox participation as well as a number of dimensions of political protest, and also takes account of the causal order between conventional participation and protest. The analysis indicates that previous findings demonstrating a substantial positive association between unidimensional measures of conventional and unconventional political behavior are incomplete and indeed somewhat misleading. The connection between orthodox participation and protest weakens as the style of protest becomes more unorthodox, to such an extent that none of the separate modes of conventional participation are directly related to radical protest. Using sheaf coefficients, the paper also tests the relative explanatory power of three sets of determinants of participation and protest: social background characteristics, general orientations toward politics, and attitudes toward issues. Issues are repeatedly weaker than the other two groups of variables in predicting conventional participation but have relatively strong effects on political protest, particularly compared with political orientations, while social structure is consistently influential. 相似文献

This article investigates the interactive reciprocal relationship of microfinance activities and social capital among members of the Kufusa Mari microfinance scheme in Nyanga, Zimbabwe. It reports on a study conducted among 146 randomly selected respondents, plus other participants selected for focus group discussions and key informant interviews. A reciprocal relationship between microfinance activities and social capital existed in this case study, but was found to be three-pronged, also involving developmental goals. The community should be encouraged to join the Kufusa Mari group scheme to promote self-initiated grassroots community development and advancement. 相似文献

Arianne N. Grace 《Journal of Gender Studies》2019,28(3):363-370
The National Football League (NFL) is the most popular sport in the United States. Of the NFL’s passionate fan base, 46 percent are women. Despite the substantial attraction and following by women, communication to this audience has been compromised through gender discriminated sport media content. We examined Twitter posts from the NFL’s Carolina Panthers, over a two-month test period. The posts confirm a bias toward men. On the rare occasion woman were noted, it was framed in a stereotypical context, for example, promoting team cheerleaders. We conclude by making recommendations on future social media strategy for the NFL and its related teams. There is an opportunity to embrace womanhood and build trust among this viable stakeholder. 相似文献

Athletic Involvement and Adolescent Delinquency 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Athough conventional wisdom suggests that organized sport deters delinquency by building character, structuring adolescents’
time, and providing incentives for socially approved behavior, the empirical evidence to date has been mixed. Based on a sample
of approximately 600 Western New York adolescents, the present study examined how self-reported jock identity, school athlete
status, and frequency of athletic activity differentially influenced a range of delinquent behaviors. Neither athlete status
nor frequency of athletic activity predicted these behaviors; however, jock identity was associated with significantly more
incidents of delinquency. This finding was robust across both gender and race. Follow-up analyses indicated that jock identity
facilitated both minor and major delinquency, with major delinquency effects for white but not black adolescents.
