Although it can be challenging, engagement with diverse knowledges and knowledge systems can lead to better decisions. The purpose of this paper is to open a dialog about transrational (spiritual) knowing within socio-ecological decision-making with two common interest goals in mind: (1) making better decisions for long-term sustainability for all beings, including those who are human and those who are not, and (2) animating processes for decision-making that are inclusive of ways of knowing of all peoples. I suggest that serious consideration of transrational knowing is critical to addressing the incommensurability of Western and Indigenous knowledge systems, and meeting the identified goals. 相似文献

The study examined the relationship between physical punishment and socioemotional well-being in a sample of Jamaican adolescents.
The data indicated that the overwhelming majority of adolescent respondents experienced physical punishment within their families.
Physical punishment was significantly associated with adverse psychological and behavioral consequences, in that adolescents
reporting being victims of physical punishment also indicated a greater propensity to developmental adjustment problems than
their non-victimized peers. However, unlike findings from research emanating from more industrialized cultures, sociodemographic
factors were not associated with the incidence of physical punishment. Gender showed statistical significance on all socioemotional
dimensions and with behavior problems but not with physical punishment. Implications for policy decisions to reduce children’s

Second to fourth digit ratios (2D:4D) are sexually dimorphic in human hands and established by the 13th gestational week. Application of 2D:4D for determining sex in living individuals by Kanchan et al. (Forensic Sci Int, 181, 2008, 53.e1) produced classification rates of 80% for males and 74–78% for females. Few studies have explored the use of 2D:4D for sexing skeletal remains. We test estimated finger lengths, phalanx lengths, and 2D:4D derived from hand bones for determining sex. Maximum phalanx length was collected using a mini‐osteometric board from 451 individuals of known age, sex, and ancestry in four skeletal collections. Logistic regression of 2nd and 4th digit finger and phalanx lengths produced classification rates greater than 80%. Digit ratios, however, failed to reach classification rates greater than 59%. Our results support those of Voracek (Forensic Sci Int, 185, 2009, e29) and suggest that 2D:4D may be population‐specific and thus inappropriate for universal application as a means of determining sex. 相似文献

This article treats Auditors-General in a generic sense, but focuses on those institutions developed out of the Westminster system of government which undertake financial statement or regularity audits as well as performance or value for money or efficiency-type audits. The audit offices included are those at both federal and state levels in Australia, the United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada and New Zealand.
The article is in two parts. The first selectively addresses perceived roles and responsibilities arising out of parliamentary legislation, debates and reviews or inquiries, Auditor-General reports, papers or similar contributions by academic and other interested commentators. The second deals with the future scope for influence, focusing mainly on possible contributions to the improved performance of the public sector including that of audit offices themselves. The latter recognises that auditors-general are very much part of the governance framework within which they operate. While they might be able to influence its development, the framework largely dictates their role, responsibilities and possible scope for action. Reflecting on that framework beyond the next few years might be an inviting conceptual exercise but is unlikely to add much value. 相似文献

This article examines the attitudes of sample populations of urban, suburban and rural police officers in New Jersey in regard
to a hypothetical use of force scenario. The aim of the study is to identify similarities and differences in the perceptions
of officers who are faced with the same type of hypothetical situations but who are exposed to different training, procedural
and environmental factors. Police officers in the United States receive different types of training in each state that might
influence their attitudes towards the use of force. A pilot study was conducted comparing two urban police departments from
two different states and showed some differences in the attitudes of the surveyed officers. To further explore these differences,
a more refined look at three police departments in one state (New Jersey) was conducted as part of a doctoral dissertation
of the lead author. Research questions are aimed at identifying the differences in the frameworks for the justification of
force based on a host of variables. The research questions stipulated that there will be some significant differences in attitudes
towards the use of force by the officers, based on physical location of the communities they police. The findings of the study
identified additional factors that might influence the officers’ attitudes. Twelve focus groups, four at each of the sites,
were analyzed and it appears that there may be a geographic and demographic influence on how the officers respond to the scenario. 相似文献

Abstract: A vast majority of firearms‐related suicides involve the conventional use of a properly functioning, intact firearm. Occasionally, forensic investigators encounter a case wherein the firearm suicide victim employs some form of unconventional use of a weapon, or utilizes an unusual weapon type. In this case report, the authors present an unusual case in which a man committed suicide by using a shotgun shell, a shotgun barrel (separate from the rest of the gun), and a BB. Some confusion as to the cause and manner of death was present during the initial scene investigation. Examination at autopsy revealed the cause of death to be a shotgun wound of the chest and prompted further scene investigation. Therefore, this case serves as another example of the importance of cooperation between scene investigators and forensic pathologists when investigating a death. A review of suicidal firearm cases using unconventional means and/or firearms is presented. 相似文献

While interest in green criminology has rapidly expanded over the past twenty-five years, much of this growth has occurred on the periphery of orthodox criminology. This article suggests that green criminology’s marginalization is partially a result of its non-quantitative methodology. We hypothesize that non-quantitative tendencies within green criminology distance it from orthodox criminology because orthodox criminology values quantitative methods (Tewksbury et al. in J Crim Justice Educ 16(2):265–279, 2005). Here, we examine how neglecting quantitative research methods may contribute to inattention to green criminology within orthodox criminology, and we consider what can be done to change that situation. We suggest that employing quantitative approaches within green criminology is one way to increase its appeal to mainstream criminology, and that quantitative studies, in conjunction with other research methodologies, can also enhance generalizability of findings, influence policy, and advance theory construction and hypothesis testing. 相似文献
