Diversity of 17-locus Y-STR haplotypes in Upper (Southern) Egyptians

Seventeen Y-STR loci included in the AmpF?STR^® Yfiler™ PCR Amplification kit were typed in a population sample of 208 males from Upper (South) Egypt. Of 204 observed haplotypes, 200 were unique (96.6%) and 4 were found twice each. The 17 loci gave a discriminating power of 0.9998. DYS458 showed the highest diversity as a single-locus marker (h = 0.868) along with a high frequency of microvariants and new alleles (22% of the sample). Other loci revealed duplicated and null alleles. Comparative analysis with Y-STR datasets of relevant populations and submission of the haplotypes to the Y-STR Haplotype Reference Database (YHRD) were undertaken.     

Borders and Boundaries: Locating the Law in Film

The essay examines the emergence of law and film in the curricula of law schools in the context of Britain. It outlines the development of legal education in England and Wales and the relationship between legal education and training. It notes the broadening out of the syllabus to encompass more politicized courses taught within their socio-economic context like family law and labour law. From this shift of academic focus the politically contextual has extended to the cultural context. The relationship between law and culture both in literature and in other areas has been the end result of this relaxation of focus on professional education. Finally, the precise nature of law and film and its boundaries are discussed.     

Differential enforcement across police jurisdictions and client demand in paid sex markets

Police officers on the ground, as well as their senior officers, generally accept the view that arresting prostitutes and their clients is simply not as important as arresting many other types of ‘offenders’. Police officer preferences and priorities will differ such that the discretion applied to the enforcement of paid sex market related offences varies across locations. Motivated by increasing policymaker interest in considering demand-side policies, a simple model is developed to help analyse how clients will be likely to respond to enforcement level differences across jurisdictions. A range of policy implications that arise are also identified and discussed.     

RHETORIC OF THE LAWYER AND PHILOSOPHICAL CONVERSATION

The article focuses on the difference between strategic rhetoric and philosophical conversation. It first tries to distinguish between sophistical manipulation and valid strategic argumentation. In order to do that, the author tries to give a new meaning to the old Aristotelian tripartition between logos, ethos, and pathos. Then, he uses Chaim Perelman’s theory of argumentation to show that the standard of rationality in practical reasoning is a specific one. After having clarified the very concept of strategic argumentation, the author distinguishes it from the notion of philosophical conversation. He tries to show that if the latter is completely replaced by the former, the danger exists that victimization and morals “a la carte” will generate a defeat of critical thought.     

Detergent: an alternative approach to traditional bone cleaning methods for forensic practice

Osteological assessment of human remains forms an essential part of forensic work, especially during the examination of extensively decomposed, dismembered, or burnt bodies. Currently employed methods for removal of adherent soft tissue reflect practices often used by museum curators, notably insect consumption, enzymatic maceration, or boiling of the bones, with subsequent manual removal of material. This study was designed to assess the effectiveness of detergents for the purpose of soft-tissue removal from animal-derived specimens. The results indicate that such a means is comparable to enzymatic maceration but with fewer health and safety issues and greater advantages regarding transportation and availability of materials when an investigator is in a fieldwork scenario.
