闽台区域社会文化研究的新进展——汪毅夫《闽台区域社会研究》评介

汪毅夫先生的新著《闽台区域社会研究》(鹭江出版社2004年版),是近年来闽台社会历史文化研究中的一部力作。在这之前,作者已经在这方面取得了显著的研究成果,先后出版了《台湾社会与文化》、《中国文化与闽台社会》、《闽台历史社会与民俗文化》三部学术文集。从这几部文集的书名,便可以看出作者研究的逐步深化:先是从“台湾社会”到“闽台社会”、“闽台历史社会”,开始把闽台社会历史文化作为一个整体来研究;现在则从“闽台社会”、“闽台历史社会”进入“闽台区域社会”,明确把闽台作为一个文化区域来研究。在这里,“闽台区域”的明确标…     

Risk management for targeting customs controls in developing countries: a risky venture for revenue performance?

Customs authorities in developing countries are often reluctant to forget systematic inspections for fear of risking revenue loss. Such physical inspections however, impede rather than facilitate trade. Control selectivity is therefore a key issue in customs administration reform. This paper shows how a sophisticated risk management method can facilitate trade by automatically and rationally selecting transactions, with the end result of actually enhancing revenue performance. Hearts of Darkness: white women write race

Abstract

In an effort to popularise the gas stove, boost sales and minimize the genuine and perceived dangers of using this volatile domestic appliance, late Victorian gas managers and stove manufacturers employed female cookery teachers to perform public demonstrations at trade exhibitions throughout the country. Eventually, these women comprised a special department of gas sales, calling directly on customers in their homes to offer personal instruction in the proper use and care of gas stoves. Part social workers, part salesgirls, the ‘lady demons’, short for lady demonstrators, moved between the traditionally gendered separate spheres of work and home, consciously constructing a professional image that reconciled the social tensions of this new occupation. They offer an early example of women's entrance into the corporate business world, the feminisation of consumption, and the combination of customer service with social welfare.

War Hypotheses: Drug Trafficking,Sovereignty and the Armed Forces in Mexico

This essay analyses how Mexican presidents have interpreted the concepts of drug trafficking and national security and how these particular connotations have redefined national sovereignty and the specific role of the armed forces in protecting this sovereignty. A qualitative technique of discourse analysis is used to examine public speeches by Zedillo (1994–2000), Fox (2000–2006) and Calderón (2006–2012). The conclusions suggest that drug trafficking and US omnipresence are the two main issues that shaped Mexico's national security threats during this period, with qualitatively distinct trajectories.
