‘What to do with the cutters?’ – Best practices for offender self-injurious behaviors

This paper addresses focal concerns regarding self-injurious behavior (SIB) in offenders, provides guidance on current best practices, and explains and challenges myths often held by correctional staff and administration regarding SIB. It is organized along the following thematic areas: (1) Behavior: SIBs within corrections are complex, challenging, and often misunderstood; (2) People: reducing rates of SIB in a correctional facility is a difficult challenge that requires collaboration; and (3) Place: the challenge of providing therapeutic and medical care within a correctional setting. Subsequently, policy implications and best practices recommendations are provided in order to better address this problematic behavior.     

Jumping on the Trump Train or Ditching the Donald: Campaign Rhetoric and the 2016 Congressional Election

The 2016 general election presented an unusual challenge to Republican congressional candidates: whether to market one’s campaign as aligned with or against Donald Trump’s controversial candidacy. In this paper, we determine what district and member-level factors influence candidate endorsements of Trump for president. Second, we study if the endorsements hurt candidates on Election Day. We find that underlying political partisanship, as measured by Mitt Romney’s 2012 vote share in congressional districts, predicts much of incumbents’ support for Trump, and that candidates’ support did not harm them in the general election.     

On the evaluation of procedural systems in laboratory experiments

Conclusion This article has criticized various aspects of the Thibaut and Walker research. Thibaut and Walker have greatly contributed to the study of procedural justice by conceptually isolating issues and suggesting ways they can be empirically studied. Our criticisms in Section I point out weaknesses in the design of particular experiments but do not question the appropriateness of laboratory research on the operating characteristics of procedural systems. In this realm, Thibaut and Walker's work will provide the starting point for future research.We do question the appropriateness of laboratory research for answering subjective questions, as outlined in Section III. While we agree that experimental research can indicate how people feel about a system, we do not think that objective measurement of the incidence of such subjective feelings tells us anything about the objective qualities of the systems considered. The assertion that one system is superior to another because some people feel it is so goes beyond the limitations of the experiments and the data. This type of overgeneralization is seriously misleading when it is used to support policy recommendations, particularly when other factors, such as the costs we discuss in Section II, are not considered.We wish to thank Dr. Jacqueline Macaulay, Professor Stewart Macaulay, and Dr. Neil Vidmar for their comments on an earlier draft of this article.
