President Cardoso's recent assessment of the prospects for “globalized social democracy” raises, once again, the question
of what space for agency exists within the global political economy for actors in the South, which was central to the analysis
Cardoso and Faletto presented in Dependency and Development 40 years ago. Dependency and Development's “historical–structural” approach balanced belief in the possibility of political agency with a keen appreciation of structural
constraint. Cardoso's current exploration of global possibilities carries forward both tradition of the historical–structural
method, arguing that social democracy is an option in the South and that the globalized social democrats in the South will
play a growing role in shaping global political institutions. He does not explore the possibility that social democrats in
the South may need to play a role in shaping global economic rules. This paper argues that reconstructing global market rules
is crucial to the long-run success of “globalized social democracies” in the South and that such reconstruction, however difficult,

The case of Mancora, Northern Peru, illustrates a process of neoliberalisation through which conceptions of place, local identities and the recent history of the place have been reformulated due to the rapid expansion of global tourism. In this former fishing village, tourism development altered local conceptions of place, allowing the emergence of contrasting projects for converting it into a beach resort. This process brought about a context governed by land conflicts and tension between local authorities, where local inhabitants reshaped their identities and the recent history of the place in order to gain or maintain ownership over valuable natural resources. 相似文献

This article deals with the development of political relations between the United States of America and Austria-Hungary in 1915. These relations are especially marked by the pressure applied by the Austro-Hungarian government towards diminishing American support of the countries of the Entente. It was a conflict of crucial significance—the actual performance of American neutrality was at stake. The study proves that, as early as 1915, Vienna had already considered the United States as a de facto ally of the powers of the Entente, and it did not put much hope in President Woodrow Wilson's mediating efforts. Furthermore, the article disproves the generally held but erroneous view that, almost till the end of the Great War, the American administration and public felt a certain fondness toward the Danubian monarchy. This is evidenced by the harsh reactions of the American press to the scandalous activities of the Austro-Hungarian embassy in the United States. Armed conflict is widely believed to disrupt agricultural production and ‘reverse’ development, but it may also involve the violent transformation of rural economies from subsistence to commercial agriculture. The case of Las Pavas, an estate in northern Colombia, provides further evidence that armed conflict created opportunities for violent land grabs and the expansion of commercial agriculture in Colombia. However, aggregate data suggest that primitive accumulation may be only part of the story behind the massive scale of forced displacement and dispossession. This paper examines cooperation between public research centres (PRCs) and industrial firms. We analyse two types of impact—scientific
and techno economic—using objective and subjective measures, and explore the determinants of these impacts by investigating
the pre-project context, and the way that relationships are implemented and managed. The main novelty of this paper is that
the empirical analysis focuses on project level relationships, based on an original database for the Spanish case; it is the
characteristics of these relationships that are the core of our analysis. The results show that the impacts identified are
contingent on different characteristics in the relationships between PRCs and industrial firms, and that the influence of
