How to bring about change in the Bangladesh civil service? Attempts to change mindsets,behaviours and practice

This article addresses three critical questions central to many donor funded programmes which seek to enable pro‐poor reform and growth. In the context of Bangladesh, the research asks first, does the civil service has a role in promoting change of this kind? Second, can a senior civil service development programme succeed in creating reform minded civil servants? And, third, if so how might the contribution be made both more substantive and of value? These questions are addressed systematically through a literature review and evidence drawn from Managing at the Top (MATT 2)—a DFID funded programme. Relation of Antisocial and Psychopathic Traits to Suicide-related Behavior Among Offenders

Offenders with antisocial traits are relatively likely to attempt suicide, largely because they are more likely to have high negative emotionality and low constraint. Among 682 male offenders, we tested whether negative emotionality, low constraint, and also substance use problems mediated any relationship between antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) and psychopathy on the one hand, and suicide-related behavior (SRB) and ideation on the other. ASPD and the impulsivity/lifestyle features of psychopathy weakly predicted SRB. High negative emotionality and low constraint (but not substance use) mediated the relation between ASPD and SRB. Impulsivity/lifestyle features of psychopathy retained an independent predictive effect. Self-report psychopathy measures added unique predictive variance to the Psychopathy Checklist—Revised. We discuss implications for suicide risk assessment and prevention.

Development and evaluation of multiplex Y-STR assays for application in molecular genealogy

Three multiplex PCRs were developed for the analysis of 14 single-copy and 4 multi-copy Y chromosome Short Tandem Repeat (STR) loci routinely used by several public genealogical databases. These assays were used in addition to PowerPlex^® Y for the analysis of 245 DNA samples from a genealogical project. In total 244 different haplotypes composed of 37–40 alleles were identified with one haplotype identical between two males with the same surname. The multi-copy loci DYS464 and DYS724 were the most polymorphic with a gene diversity of at least 0.964. The use of DYS454 and DYS455 can be questioned as these loci had the lowest gene diversity (0.039 and 0.269, respectively).
