The expressive theory of voting needs more specification of the motives for expression if it is not merely to be a theory of non-instrumental voting. Brennan and Hamlin provide such a specification. Unfortunately, using individual U.S. data from the General Social Surveys we find their predictions are contradicted. Nor if other evidence in the literature purported to be evidence of expressive voting actually implied by it. This article explores whether authors can dedicate their copyright to the public domain. Such dedications are becoming increasingly relevant as authors now see the expansion of the public domain as value in itself. This is facilitated by organisations providing pro forma documents for dedicating works to the public domain. However, there has been no real consideration of what, if any, legal effect a dedication to the public might have. This article suggests that such dedications are no more than copyright licences which, in English and US law at least, can be revoked at will. This article explores the phenomenon of neonaticide, the murder of an infant during the first day of life. Characteristics of maternal neonaticide offenders in industrialized countries were identified based on a systematic literature review. Neonaticides were most often committed by poor, relatively young, single women who lacked prenatal care. Efforts to better prevent these tragedies should include improved sex education and contraceptive access. Two legal responses to the problem of neonaticide, Safe Haven laws utilized in the United States, and anonymous birth options in Europe are discussed. 相似文献

Abstract: The "physical strength hypothesis" (PSH) predicts that where there is the greatest discrepancy in size and strength between offenders and victims, the former will use superior weaponry (e.g., firearms) to overcome structural imbalances against the latter. Using archival data from the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune , 1851–1899, this paper examines the weapons used in attempted and completed parricides in nineteenth-century America. Findings indicate that parricide offenders used firearms most frequently against their fathers while intimate contact methods were used against mothers. When gun usage was combined with level of intent in male offender patricides, where the greatest discrepancy in strength was expected, results indicate that spontaneous gun usage outnumbered premeditated gun usage, thus challenging the assumptions of the PSH. The data suggest that cultural factors such as methods of dispute resolution, weapon carrying, and alcohol consumption may be important factors in understanding parricides. 相似文献

The Psychological World of the Gay Teenager:Social Change,Narrative, and “Normality” 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper examines the application of concepts of normal adolescence pioneered by Offer and colleagues to the study of gay
and lesbian youth. Adolescent development among this population demonstrates remarkable historical variability along the lines
of generation-cohort, revealing the utility of a life-course approach to the study of normal adolescence. Concepts of normal
adolescence appear to shift with changing narratives of identity for sexual minority youth. We contrast two narratives of
gay youth identity development that have emerged since the inception of substantive research programs on gay adolescence:
(1) the narrative of struggle and success that came to dominate the literature in the 1980s and 1990s and (2) the narrative of emancipation that has emerged from the work of Savin-Williams and others who argue for a recognition of the diversity of adolescent development
for this population. In relating this contrast to Offer’s seminal contributions to the study of adolescence, we suggest that
the most normative feature of human development, particularly during adolescence, is its connection to discourses of identity
through the formation of personal narratives that anchor the life course and provide meaning to conceptions of self-development.
The example of shifting narratives of gay youth identity development is meant to exemplify this characteristic feature of
human development.

adolescence and emerging adulthood, with a focus on identity and narrative. His earlier work with former student of Dan Offer,
Maryse Richards, focused on the study of ethnicity, context, and normal adolescence. Most recently, he has been studying culture
and normal adolescent development among Israeli and Palestinian youth. In 2007 he will be appointed an Assistant Professor
