One hundred seventy-four college students and a subset of their mothers and fathers provided ratings of college students’
emotional and behavioral functioning. College students and their mothers and fathers demonstrated variable levels of correspondence
in their ratings of college students’ internalizing and externalizing behavior problems. Similar findings were noted with
t-test comparisons, with college students rating themselves as experiencing significantly higher levels of behavior problems
than did their mothers and fathers. Further, college students’ ratings of their mothers’ and fathers’ parenting and their
perceptions of their parents predicted significantly their ratings of their own behavior problems. Although mothers’ communication
reciprocity and perceptions of their college students served as significant predictors of mothers’ ratings, a different pattern
of results occurred with paternal variables. Overall, these findings further the understanding of correspondence and predictors
of cross-informant ratings of college students’ emotional and behavioral functioning.
Kimberly Renk is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando, Florida, serving
the Department of Psychology’s Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at the University
of Illinois, her Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology at Illinois State University, and her Doctoral degree in Clinical
Psychology at the University of South Florida after completing a predoctoral internship in Clinical Psychology at the Louisiana
State University Health Sciences Center. Her current interests include parents’ perceptions of their children’s emotional
and behavioral functioning and parent-child interactions. She and her graduate students pursue the study of these topics and
provide clinical services to the community surrounding UCF through the Understanding Children and Families laboratory.
Reesa Donnelly is a Doctoral student at the University of Central Florida. She received her B.A. in Psychology from the University
of Virginia and her M.S. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Central Florida. Her major research interests include
parent-child relationships in the context of cognitive development and health psychology.
Jenny Klein is a Doctoral student at the University of Central Florida. She received her B.S. in Psychology from the University
of Florida and her M.S. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Central Florida. Her main research interests are in
the area of family interactions, parenting, and child emotional and behavioral problems in minority populations.
Arazais Oliveros is a Doctoral student at the University of Central Florida. She received her B.A. in psychology from Florida
International University and her M.S. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Central Florida. Her major research interests
involve the area of children and parenting, especially in families with risk factors for child maltreatment (e.g., marital
abuse, medical concerns).
Elizabeth Baksh is a Graduate student at the University of Central Florida. She received her B.S. in psychology and religious
studies from the University of Miami and her M.S.W. from the University of South Florida. Her major research interests include

Child neglect continues to be a pressing concern in American society. However, child neglect is often found to be more difficult to assess than other forms of child maltreatment. This study explores how child welfare workers experience their day-to-day work with children and families, when neglect is the presenting concern. Convenience sampling was used to recruit former and current child welfare workers (N = 20). Three focus groups were conducted. The analyses identified four themes inherent in case workers' experiences in neglect cases: a dirty house isn't just a dirty house, dilemmas and professional judgment, different values, and ambivalence: compassion and frustration. Despite attention to the role of gangs in urban gun violence, much remains to be learned about the spatial distribution and consequences of residential gang membership. This study uses data from St. Louis to examine the effects of resident gang membership on rates of gun assault. We also consider whether gun violence is conditioned by the level of gang membership in surrounding communities. As anticipated, communities with the highest number of gang members also have the highest rates of gun assault. However, much of the impact of gang membership on gun assaults extends outside of the boundaries of gang neighborhoods, especially those neighborhoods with few or no gang members. The number of gang members in surrounding neighborhoods has no discernible effect on gun assaults in communities with higher rates of gang membership. Finally, controlling for the spatial proximity of residential gang membership helps to account for some of the association between neighborhood disadvantage and gun assaults. 相似文献

Three pilot studies were conducted to obtain information about sexual assault perpetration from adult men in the United States. Each used the same random digit-dial sampling and recruitment strategy. One pilot was administered by telephone and two via the Web. Response rates in all pilots were low. Although results cannot be generalized beyond the sample, of the 97 men who completed the surveys, approximately 40% in each pilot reported some sexual assault behavior, broadly defined. Contrary to expectations, telephone respondents reported a wider range of sexual assault behaviors. Suggestions for improving response rates include offering a choice of participation methods. 相似文献

Romantic relationships, although increasingly normative during adolescence, also present unique developmental challenges that can portend psychological difficulties. Underlying these difficulties may be the degree to which daily romantic transactions potentiate fluctuations in negative mood. The present study examined associations between adolescents’ daily romantic relationship experiences and their same-day negative affective states (i.e., fluctuations in high-arousal, aversive mood). Using a dyadic ecological momentary assessment (EMA) design, this study followed an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse sample of 98 adolescent romantic couples twice weekly for 12 weeks (n?=?196 individuals; Mage?=?16.74 years, SD?=?0.90; 45% Latina/o, 45% White; 55% receiving free or reduced meals). The results indicated that various daily romantic experiences (e.g., conflict, feelings about the relationship) predicted greater same-day negative affect. Beyond the effects of these romantic experiences, adolescent couples were also synchronized in their fluctuating negative affective states, evidencing the presence of emotional contagion. Overall, the findings indicate the salience of romantic relationships in the everyday lives of adolescents. 相似文献

This study employs latent class analysis to construct bullying involvement typologies among 3114 students (48% male, 58% White) in 40 middle schools across the U.S. Four classes were constructed: victims (15%); bullies (13%); bully-victims (13%); and noninvolved (59%). Respondents who were male and participated in fewer conventional activities were more likely to be members of the victims class. Students who were African-American and reported being less successful at school had a higher likelihood of membership in the bullies class. Bully-victims shared characteristics with bullies and victims: Students with more feelings of anger toward others and a higher tendency toward sensation-seeking had a higher likelihood of membership in the bullies and bully-victims classes, whereas lower levels of social inclusion was associated with membership in the victims and bully-victims classes. 相似文献

The links between youth’s daily activities and adjustment and the role of cultural practices and values in these links were
studied in 469 youth from 237 Mexican American families. In home interviews, data on mothers’, fathers’, and two adolescent-age
siblings’ cultural practices (language use, social contacts) and values (for familism, for education achievement) were collected,
along with data on youth risky behavior and depressive symptoms. In 7 nightly phone calls, youth reported on their day’s free
time activities (i.e., sports, academics, religious activities, television viewing, and hanging out). Analyses revealed that
youth who spent more time in unsupervised hanging out reported more depressive symptoms and risky behavior, and those who
spent more time in academic activities reported less risky behavior. Results also indicated that more Anglo-oriented youth
spent more time in sports, that more Mexican-oriented youth spent more time watching television, that fathers’ familism values
were related to youth’s time in religious activities, and that parents’ educational values were linked to youth’s time in
academic activities. Some evidence indicated that parents’ cultural practices and values, particularly fathers’, moderated
the links between daily activities and youth adjustment.

This study examined the longitudinal consistency of mother–child reporting discrepancies of parental monitoring and whether
these discrepancies predict children’s delinquent behaviors 2 years later. Participants included 335 mother/female-caregiver
and child (46% boys, >90% African American; age range 9–16 years [M = 12.11, SD = 1.60]) dyads living in moderate-to-high violence areas. Mother–child discrepancies were internally consistent
within multiple assessment points and across measures through a 2-year follow-up assessment. Further, mothers who at baseline
consistently reported higher levels of parental monitoring relative to their child had children who reported greater levels
of delinquent behaviors 2 years later, relative to mother–child dyads that did not evidence consistent discrepancies. This
finding could not be accounted for by baseline levels of the child’s delinquency, maternal and child emotional distress, or
child demographic characteristics. This finding was not replicated when relying on the individual reports of parental monitoring
to predict child delinquency, suggesting that mother–child reporting discrepancies provided information distinct from the
absolute frequency of reports. Findings suggest that mother–child discrepancies in reports of parental monitoring can be employed
as new individual differences measurements in developmental psychopathology research. 相似文献

This article analyzes the gendered expectations of authenticity in online amateur media performances through a reading of the 2006 vlog series lonelygirl15. Actress Jessica Rose was part of an artistic collective that created the character of Bree, a teenage girl who posted a series of confessional vlogs on YouTube under the screen name lonelygirl15. The vlog quickly went viral due, in part, to the almost immediate suspicion that the series was “fake.” Through a close reading of both the coverage of the sting that revealed Bree's true identity, and the narrative of the series itself, the author illustrates how the series aestheticizes precarity in order to facilitate escalating modes of intimacy with Bree's character. By placing such demands within the longer history of girls’ media production, such as the video work of Sadie Benning and Camgirl websites, this article argues that the reaction to the series makes visible the increasing political significance of the entanglement of economic concerns and identity production within the networked social sphere. 相似文献
