Charismatischer Habitus

In diesem Beitrag wird vorgeschlagen, die Arbeiten Pierre Bourdieus als kultursoziologische Wiederaufnahme bzw. Erweiterung der Weber’schen Charismaproblematik zu deuten. Wie im Einzelnen dargelegt wird, ist dieser Rückbezug auf Weber gleichwohl an einige grundlegende Revisionen gebunden. Im Gegensatz zu Weber fasst nämlich Bourdieu Charisma nicht als Sonderform legitimer politischer Herrschaft auf (?Führertum“), sondern als Dimension jeder Form symbolisch vermittelter Macht. Während Weber den Charismabegriff für außeralltägliche Ereignisse reserviert und damit als Gegenpol zum Alltag einfuhrt, können mit Bourdieu charismatische Zuschreibungsprozesse in alltäglichen kulturellen Praktiken in den Blick genommen werden. Schließlich trägt der Charismabegriff im Werk Webers heroische und naturalistische Züge, die sich letztlich einer soziologischen Erklärung entziehen. Demgegenüber kann Bourdieu mit den Begriffen Habitus und kulturelles Kapital ein Instrumentarium anbieten, mit dem die Aufmerksamkeit auf die soziale Konstitution und Reproduktion charismatisch vermittelter symbolischer Macht selbst gerichtet werden kann.     

DISARMAMENT AND BIG BUSINESS: THE CASE OF KRUPP, 1918-1925

Well before 1914, the Krupp Steel Foundry in Essen had gained a world-wide reputation as a major producer of heavy weaponry. The disarmament procedures set in train initially by the armistice and thereafter by the Versailles Treaty would, therefore, impact massively on one of Europe's few large-scale steel producers, whether in terms of output or with regard to its influence in German politics. This article analyses such developments during the early 1920s, with special reference to the activities of the Inter-Allied Military Control Commission (IMCC), including their impact on production and on the workforce at the Krupp factories in Essen. It also investigates efforts by Krupp's management (and also German politicians) to evade military restrictions and also to maintain expertise in the production of heavy weaponry.

Financial markets are marked by considerable uncertainty. Actors in financial markets are nevertheless constantly forced to make decisions. This article pursues the question of how they cope with this problem of decision-making. Based on a critical discussion of the concept of ?expectations of expectations“, Max Weber’s concept of charisma is introduced to gain a better understanding of the influence of ?stock market prophets“ on investment decisions and to explain such influence as a social process.     

Frontier Vigilantism? Australia and Contemporary Representations of Australian Antarctic Territory

This article considers the way in which recent commentators have represented Australia's relationship with Antarctica including current and future challenges. While successive Australian governments from the 1950s onwards have sought inter alia to develop and protect the country's southern oceanic and Antarctic interests, concern has persisted about the activities of other parties. The signing of the 1959 Antarctic Treaty helped to ensure that the territorial status quo prevailed with regard to the Australian Antarctic Territory. The entry of the United Nations Law of the Sea Convention (UNCLOS) into force in 1994 created new opportunities for further expressions of sovereign rights in this region. While mindful of the evolving legal geographies affecting Antarctica, our paper asks a series of questions about this relationship with the far south: how has Australian national identity been informed and influenced by Antarctic engagements? Will UNCLOS actually weaken the Antarctic Treaty System? Finally, do contemporary Australian pronouncements on the Antarctic hint at anxieties reminiscent of the 1950s? We conclude with a warning that nationalistic evocations may well unsettle a delicate balance concerning the Southern Ocean and disputed ownership of Antarctica.
