Althusser and the theory of ideology

This paper is a critical discussion of Louis Althusser's text 'Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses'. It questions the pertinence of the problem of the reproduction of the relations of production. It challenges both parts of Althusser's answer to this problem. The first being the theory of ideological state apparatuses and the second the theory of the formation of individual subjects through the imaginary. The concept of representation is subjected to critical discussion.     

Good literature and bad history: The 9/11 commission's tale of strategic intelligence

Uncritical acceptance of the findings of the 9/11 Commission has obscured how the commission intentionally misrepresented pre-attack strategic intelligence on the threat from Al Qaeda. The commission staff used such techniques as highly selective use of material, partial truths, irrelevant references, plays on words, quotations out of context, and suggestive language leading to false inferences to portray as weak what had been a strong strategic analytical performance. The commission's misrepresentation corrupted history, damaged public understanding of the role of intelligence in counterterrorism, and helped to build support for a reorganization scheme that has made US counterterrorist intelligence worse rather than better.     

Paying their Way: Local Associations, the Constituency Quota Scheme and Conservative Party Finance

The nature and role of political parties is changing in contemporary Britain. There has been a decline of both party identification among voters and of ideological commitment linked to class, coupled with the growth of alternative political agenda. But government in Britain is dependent on success in an electoral system which relies heavily not only on a party's general level of support but also on the geography of that support. Voters have to be mobilized locally, by party organizations run by activists. The Conservative Party appears to have increasing problems doing this.
