Connections between media coverage, economic conditions, and performance evaluations of political leaders have seldom been explored in specific local media markets, due to the challenges of measuring media tone and content for a large number of media outlets or markets. In this paper, we develop a measure of media tone by comparing the economic evaluations of local media consumers and national media consumers within the same media market. We then use this measure to evaluate the relationship between media tone and objective economic conditions. We find that positive media tone increases the probability that individuals will approve of the governor’s performance in office, and that tone also attenuates the negative relationship between unemployment and gubernatorial approval. 相似文献

Women who conceive as a result of rape often elect to abort the fetus. We describe twelve cases where genetic markers were tested on the aborted fetal material to provide evidence of the genetic constitution of the rapist. This article addresses the assumption that private sector management is more efficient than public sector management. It identifies the ways in which public and private sector personnel management are alike, and the ways in which they are different. The differences help the reader understand the reasons for the myth o f private sector superiority. This essay argues that, given the purposes of government employment which have littlet do with management efficiency, and which even militate against it, the criterionof efficiency is misplaced in the evaluation of the effectiveness of public administration. Using a variety of behavioral and motivational measures, it is demonstrable that workers in the public sector are not less likely to seek opportunities for personal fulfillmerit in their jobs than workers in the private sector. In 1985, we began studying athletic fatalities in Marion County, Indiana (city of Indianapolis, population 779,966) U.S.A. We previously reported the data for calendar year 1985. The reviewed cases include all sudden, unexpected, or traumatic deaths of conditioned, competitive athletes in Marion County. This follow-up is a review of all athletic fatalities in Marion County that occurred from January 1986 through July 1988. All deaths during or immediately after athletic activity were reviewed, whether or not the participant was a conditioned athlete. This article examines the policy of Fifth Republic governments towards the modernization of the French civil service, with particular reference to the period since 1989. It has three main objectives. The first is to clarify the terms of the French debate about the crisis of the state, which is necessary to an understanding of the intellectual context of reform. The second is to describe and analyse the various strands of 'administrative modernization' policy. The third is to provide an interim assessment of the impact on the structure and culture of the civil service of what is an on-going programme of administrative reform.
