This article closely examines the first set of accusations in the Matthew Hopkins witch‐hunting phenomenon in early modern England by paying particular attention to the female actors. It reveals that Matthew Hopkins was not only a member of the elite group that lent credibility to the witchcraft accusations arising from within the community, but he also had kinship ties with Susan Edwards, mother of the child supposedly bewitched to death by this group of women. This impacts on the traditional historiography concerning Hopkins's role as a witch‐finder. Secondly, the evidence reveals a group of marginalized women who befriended and supported one another. It is argued that this group of independent women, meeting together without the supervision of a man, challenged the social order. Witchcraft was a social phenomenon that had the ability to satisfy many divergent needs. When multiple agendas converged, a suggestion by a cunning person could end in the execution of many victims. The author suggests that the so‐called witches' meeting was actually a prayer meeting of semi‐literate, devout women, who fell outside the parameters of the ‘godly’ community of Mistley parish. In this case, the accusations may not have spread any further than the two women who were initially suggested by the cunning woman, if it had not been for the women's group meetings. 相似文献

Sexual minority (lesbian and gay, bisexual, mostly heterosexual) individuals are at an increased risk for hazardous drinking than heterosexual individuals, but little is known about the nature of the disparities as adolescents reach adulthood. We used four waves of a nationally representative data set, the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), to examine disparities of hazardous drinking outcomes between sexual minority and heterosexual men and women from adolescence to young adulthood. Participants were 14–18 years old at the first assessment (N = 12,379; 53 % female) and 27–31 years old at the fourth assessment. At the fourth assessment, 13 % self-identified as sexual minority individuals, 16 % were Hispanic, and 36 % were of minority race, including primarily African Americans (60 %) and Asian Americans (18 %). There were clear hazardous drinking disparities between sexual minority individuals and heterosexual individuals over time. During adolescence, sexual minority individuals, particularly females, reported higher levels of hazardous drinking. As study participants reached adulthood, the magnitude of the hazardous drinking disparities increased among sexual minorities, sexual minority men in particular. Additional research is needed to better understand the developmental mechanisms that underlie the emerging sexual orientation related disparities of hazardous drinking in young adulthood. 相似文献

Social movement theorists have developed several concepts to explain the role of social networking in maintaining social movements. This is particularly relevant for periods when levels of public activism are low due to backlash, hostile social contexts and structural uncertainties. As part of my study of the women's movement online and feminist blog networks in Australia, I provide a review of several of these concepts, interrogating their applicability to the study of online communities. This paper explores the relevance of the social movement theory concepts of submerged networks, abeyance structures and the related idea of counterpublics for the study of feminist blog networks. In 2009, the radio station Triple J's ‘Hottest 100 of All Time’ poll featured no solo women artists, and women played on few tracks. In response to this, several strands of discourse developed in the Australian feminist blogosphere identifying ways that the history of rock music excludes or erases women. Activists developed a cross-platform poll on Twitter, Facebook and email, and promoted it through blogs and Twitter, to counter the ‘Hottest 100 Men’ with a ‘Hottest 100 Women’. The broader context of relational aggression in adolescent romantic relationships was assessed by considering the ways such
aggression emerged from prior experiences of peer pressure and was linked to concurrent difficulties in psychosocial functioning.
Longitudinal, multi-reporter data were obtained from 97 adolescents and their best friends at age 15 and from adolescents
and their romantic partners at age 18. Teens’ relational aggression and romantic partners’ victimization were predicted from
levels of best friends’ pressuring behaviors toward teens in an observed interaction as well as from best friends’ ratings
of how much pressure teens experienced from their peer group. Romantic partner relational aggression and teen victimization
were predicted by pressure from teens’ peer group only. Adolescents’ romantic relational aggression and victimization were
also associated with elevated levels of depressive symptoms and increased alcohol use. Results are discussed in terms of the
connection of relational aggression in romantic relationships to the broader task of establishing autonomy with peers in psychosocial
development.

This study investigated genetic and environmental influences on the associations between mother–child relationship quality
(warmth and hostility) and adolescent conduct problems and cigarette use. Participants included 601 mothers and adolescent
twin pairs (aged 12–17 years). Mothers and adolescents provided separate reports of mother-to-child warmth and hostility.
A combined measure of mother and adolescent reported conduct problems was used while adolescents provided reports of their
cigarette use. Analyses were conducted using bivariate genetic analyses of correlated factors models and regression analyses
of monozygotic twin differences. Genetic influences were found for most ratings of the parent–child relationship, with evidence
of gender and/or rater-specificity for some measures. The relationship between mother–child hostility with adolescent conduct
problems and cigarette use was influenced by genetic and environmental effects. Evidence was found for shared environment
effects on the relationship between mother–child warmth and conduct problems. Examining monozygotic twin differences provided
further support for non-shared environmental influence on the relationship between mothers’ expressions of hostility and low
warmth and adolescent adjustment. Findings are discussed in relation to the interplay between genetic and environmental effects
underlying links between parent–child relations and adolescent behavior problems.

Participants (n = 36) with consistent Pre-conformist ego development levels during multiple adolescent assessments were studied to determine
whether and how their ego levels had changed at age 25. Those (n = 12) whose ego levels remained at the Pre-conformist level were assigned to a life-course-persistent profound ego development arrest trajectory group; those (n = 24) whose ego levels reached the Conformist or Post-conformist level at age 25 were assigned to an adolescence-limited profound ego development arrest trajectory group. Analysis of predictors and age 25 correlates of group membership revealed that selected age 14 family interaction
behaviors differentiated the two groups. At age 25, members of the adolescence-limited group showed superior performance on
several measures of interpersonal and intrapersonal functioning.

Representative democracies require sufficient numbers of citizens to put themselves forward as candidates for political office. Existing studies have shown that political institutions are not representative of the population as a whole, suggesting that political ambition is not evenly distributed across all potential candidates. We discuss evidence from the first systematic study of political ambition in Britain, examining the question of who is interested in putting themselves forward for political office. We find patterns in the distribution of political ambition that help to explain why British political institutions do not look like the British people as a whole and include a gender gap, a social class gap, an education gap, a north–south divide, and a personality gap. We discuss the implications of our findings for political parties, arguing that they need to adjust practices of candidate recruitment in such a way that minimises the effects of these biases. 相似文献

Existing research has uncovered a link between religious practice and political ethnocentrism. Religious individuals are relatively inclined to both support policies that benefit their own ethnic group and support political competitors seeking to represent them. These findings are broadly consistent with a large body of literature that examines the relationship between religion and ethnic prejudice. To date, empirical research has concentrated overwhelmingly on Western, Christian contexts. There is, however, reason to believe that Islamic practice may produce more universalistic beliefs and attitudes. This paper examines the relationship between religious participation and political ethnocentrism in Indonesia, this world’s largest Muslim-majority country. Using survey data collected during the lead-up to the 2009 national elections, this paper examines the relationship between religious practice and expressed preference for co-ethnic political leadership. It finds that a respondent’s self-reported level of religious activity strongly correlates with stated preference for co-ethnic leadership. These findings bolster confidence that the relationship between religious participation and ethnocentrism holds beyond Western Christian contexts. For Indonesia, deepening Islamic practice could thus predict a rise in ethnocentrism, threatening the country’s reputation for tolerance. 相似文献
