"Ancient" protocols for the crime scene? Similarities and differences between forensic genetics and ancient DNA analysis

We provide a short overview on some current issues in the fields of forensic genetics and ancient DNA (aDNA) analysis. We discuss about the existence of the possible points of contact between the two disciplines, in terms of open problems and the inherent approach to their solution. We mainly focus on the problem of results authentication, its theoretical and technical aspects.     

Therapeutic jurisprudence and outpatient commitment law: Kendra's Law and case study.

This article considers the implications of assisted outpatient commitment laws (OPC), with specific focus on New York's "Kendra's Law" through the lens of therapeutic jurisprudence (TJ). In this article, the author offers perspectives on the relationship between involuntary civil commitment, outpatient commitment, and the concept of the "least restrictive alternative"; considers pertinent empirical research, and looks at OPC's controversial relationship to forced drugging. Here, the civil libertarian critique is briefly considered, as well as the MacArthur Research Network research. Finally, the author looks closely at Kendra's Law, providing a brief overview of the law itself, and identifying some "pressure points" and pivotal issues, and considers the TJ implications of Kendra's Law, to determine how it "fits" into the public's "take" on all of mental disability law.

For many Americans, dental coverage is merely a matter of cosmetics, a pretty smile. But for the elderly, a dental condition can affect nutrition, health, and financial well-being. In her note, Amanda Schwob explores the dental exclusion to Medicare, a provision of great concern to the elderly. Ms. Schwob seeks to define the scope of the dental exclusion by means of the plain language of the Medicare statute, case law, and legislative history. This analysis reveals startling uncertainty in this area of law. Next, Ms. Schwob considers several proposals before Congress as well as state reimbursement policies. The note concludes with concrete suggestions to remedy the ambiguity surrounding Medicare's dental exclusion.     

North America's first supervised injection site opens in Vancouver

The number of injection drug users frequenting the long-awaited supervised injection site in the Downtown Eastside has steadily increased since the site opened in September 2003. However, there are concerns about the restrictions imposed by Health Canada and about the activities of the Vancouver Police.     

Supervised injection sites: Health Canada approves Vancouver pilot sites, but concerns remain

The paperwork has been processed, and Health Canada says that two pilot supervised injection sites (SISs) in Vancouver can now proceed, but operational funding for the site to be located in the Downtown Eastside has yet to be secured. Meanwhile, tired of waiting for the sanctioned SISs to open, community groups in Vancouver have begun to operate unsanctioned sites. There are also concerns that even if operational funding for the Downtown Eastside site is obtained, the pilot SIS project is too small in scope to make a major impact on public health in the area.
