Book Review: Considering Social Justice: A Review of David Miller's Principles of Social Justice

Miller's volume is a useful, thorough, and innovating overview of the subject of social justice. It inspires three lines of critical response. The first involves the symbiotic role of philosophy and empirical inquiry in the analysis of justice. The second involves the qualities of opportunity that ought to underlie justice. Finally, there are a few lessons regarding the status of justice in the overall evaluation of society that can be learned from the case of the United States, which has an anomalously bad record with respect to distributive justice. The centrality of politics is one of the implications of the analysis.

Reviewing edited books is sometimes a difficult task, particularlywhen faced with interdisciplinary collections of articles. IntellectualProperty Rights: Innovation, Governance and the InstitutionalEnvironment is such a book, and therefore a true analysis ofits impact may elude this reviewer because of a lack of knowledgein some of the topics covered within the work. Nevertheless, even a non-specialist can recognize a good collectionwhen he sees one. The book presents an impressive line-up ofexperts in the increasingly relevant field of law     

First Amendment influence in argentine republic law and jurisprudence

The First Amendment to the United States Constitution has influenced the development of freedom of expression in a number of countries, including the Argentine Republic. This article focuses on law as it came to affect mass media beginning with assumptions from the 16th century, when Argentina was under Spanish domination, and continues through the 1853–60 constitutional conventions that marked the initiation of First Amendment influence in Argentine law and jurisprudence. The article explains how the de facto governments that ruled Argentina from 1862 to 1983 gave direction to law and court decisions affecting the mass media, including film censorship, press penal responsibility, prior restraint, state of siege and the right to reply. The article concludes by analyzing how these laws and court decisions have influenced media and Argentine society, especially in fostering self‐censorship.

Can ICT-enabled real-time data contribute to adaptive management in development programming?

This article aims to explore whether ICT-enabled real-time data (RTD) systems can help to improve the operationalisation of adaptive management of international development programmes. Using a qualitative multi-method approach consisting of 48 semi-structured key expert interviews and four exploratory case studies, we found that RTD can successfully inform rapid tactical adaptive management in development programmes but is, on its own, of only limited use for most strategic adaptive management. The research identified multiple contextual barriers to the use of RTD for adaptive management. These barriers need to be addressed to realise the full potential of real-time adaptive management of programmes.
