Social explanations for job insecurity: Group influences on causal attributions

Job insecurity—a concern about the future existence of the job—is one of those unexpected events which lead to a search for causal explanations. This paper pays attention to the social nature of these attributions. The social character of the causal attribution process investigated here appears from the kind of attributions that employees make and the degree in which causal attributions are influenced by social ideas shared by colleagues and other groups. We research these social explanations for job insecurity on the basis of the results of a survey of job insecurity and causal attributions among 311 employees in the Netherlands.     

The resolution trust corporation in historical perspective

Abstract

This paper contrasts the asset disposition challenges facing the Resolution Trust Corporation (RTC) with similar challenges that faced two earlier government agencies: the Home Owners Loan Corporation (HOLC) and the Federal Asset Disposition Association (FADA).

The paper first compares the quantity and diversity of RTC assets with the somewhat fewer but more uniform assets (one‐ to four‐family homes) sold by the HOLC. The FADA's challenge was quite modest compared with the RTC and the HOLC. The paper then contrasts current RTC policy issues with those that arose with the HOLC and the FADA. The paper does not, however, make specific policy recommendations.     

Cooperation Challenges for the Special Tribunal for Lebanon

While the Agreement between the United Nations and Lebanon providesa solid framework for cooperation between the Special Tribunaland Lebanon, Security Council Resolution 1757 (2007) is silenton the duty of third states to assist the Tribunal. As a result,the Special Tribunal will be confronted with a variety of obstaclesand problems in obtaining their cooperation, which may seriouslyhamper its functioning.     

Peasant involvement in the Cuban revolution

Existing explanations of peasant involvement in the Cuban revolution emphasise such social‐psychological factors as the peasants’ purported ‘land hunger’. An alternative explanation focuses on the meshing of a localised landlord/squatter conflict with a state/guerrilla conflict. The case‐study lends further evidence to the contention that explanations relying on social organisational factors, rather than state of mind factors, are better able to account for why people become involved in social movements.     

The instituting of brute facts

An earlier version of this paper was submitted to a working group at the Conference of the International Association of Philosophy and Literature (Atlanta, 1989), and discussed with H.N. Casta~neda (Bloomington, 1989). I am grateful for the valuable criticism received on both occasions. Assessing the Composition and Diversity of the Australian Interest Group System

Any democratic society requires mechanisms for citizens to have effective political voice. Clearly, political parties provide a key channel for expressing views and preferences. However, organised interests provide another important mechanism for such representation. A crucial question in this regard is whether the interest group system is capable of ensuring the representation of a variety of public and private interests. Resolving these debates requires data that map the terrain and also are attentive to organisational diversity. This article takes up this challenge through exploring the composition and diversity of the Australian system of organised interests, using a new data set based on the Directory of Australian Associations. This system‐level approach delivers important insights into the nature of the Australian interest group system, as well as provides a framework for subsequent work interpreting and contextualising advocacy activities of particular groups, or lobbying dynamics in specific policy domains.     

Experimental evaluation of the impact of seating depth variations on observed marks on primers

Although the examination of bullet and primer striae patterns is still a very important task in forensic ballistics, a fundamental explanation or theoretical model for reasoning about the (ir)reproducibility of the observed marks is still non-existing. More specifically, it is still unclear which ammunition production or firing condition parameters may play an important role in the striae and marks formation process. From a practical point of view this situation is unfortunate because a proper knowledge of these parameters and conditions could help underpin and explain certain differences found in actual casework investigations. Additionally, a proper understanding of these issues could allow examiners to select or develop a near-optimal test firing procedure by using more detailed and controlled variations of certain intra- and/or inter-ammunition parameters than the ones that are in use today. In this paper, we discuss the results of an experiment aimed at evaluating the impact of primer seating depth variations on observed primer striae and other marks. First, three sets of cartridge cases with different seating depth intervals were selected. Second, each of these sets were fired consecutively using a selected pistol. Finally, the cartridge cases were examined using both traditional optical microscopes and three-dimensional (3D) profilometer techniques. The results reported in this paper show that in our experiments no important impact of the initial primer seating depth on the observed primer striae patterns could be found, but that the firing pin impression does seem to change if the initial seating depth is larger than a certain threshold.     

Bureaucratic socialism in reform mode: the changing politics of Cuba’s post-Fidel era

Standard wisdom explains Cuba’s current transformation as one of economic change but political immobility. However, Cuban politics have also undergone a major change since the handing over of power from Fidel to Raúl Castro – even if the rhetoric used has been one of continuity. This article traces this process by looking at four areas: the depersonalisation and re-institutionalisation of the political structures; the diversification of the public sphere, particularly through the use of digital media; the liberalisation of travel and migration, with its transformative impact on state–citizen relations; and the turn to a moderate foreign policy, as highlighted by the rapprochement with the USA, with its implications for legitimising the underpinnings of Cuban socialism. Although the shift has been well below the threshold of a transition to multiparty democracy, Cuba has evolved from the charismatic model of the past to what can be understood as bureaucratic socialism in reform mode.
