‘Girls who arouse dangerous passions’: women and bathing, 1900-39

Abstract

This article focuses on the struggle by women to achieve unsegregated access to beaches and swimming pools in Britain from the beginning of the twentieth century until the start of the Second World War against a background of bureaucratic regulation. Through a variety of sources that contrast official material with the mood within popular culture, it exposes the clash of patriarchal prudery against changing public opinions. It poses questions on the notions of female modesty and emancipation as women's swimwear reflected changing perceptions of the female body and explores conflicting discourses of glamour and sex versus health and efficiency.     

‘This Spider Web of Woman's Life’: Private Space and Community Life in Peter Abelard

This essay explores such complex and ambiguous presentation of convent life in Helen Waddell's novel Peter Abelard (1933), considering Heloise's fear of women's communities as expression of concerns central to women's writing published in Britain during the 1920s and 1930s. Waddell uses Peter Abelard to intervene in these contemporary debates about private and public spaces. The dislike which her Heloise expresses for women's communities may, given the text's feminist ideology, seem surprising, but, as discussed, similar anxieties are voiced in texts by several of Waddell's contemporaries, and the novel is shaped by this tension between private, autonomous individual and shared public space. Peter Abelard is read in relation to selected journalism of Vera Brittain and Winifred Holtby (late 1920s), Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own (1928) and Dorothy Sayers' Gaudy Night (1935).     

Structural injustice and alienation: a reply to my critics

ABSTRACT

This author’s reply addresses critiques by Reinhard Wolf, Alasia Nuti, and Kimberly Hutchings of my 2017 book, Justice and Reconciliation in World Politics. First, I restate the normative and practical significance of focusing on challenges of structural injustice for resolving many serious and pressing problems in world politics, including climate change. Second, I begin to resolve some puzzles about the concept of alienation and its relationship to justice and reconciliation, by outlining two concepts of alienation, and distinguishing them from alienation as a cognitive-affective experience. Third, I clarify the limits and potential of decolonial political theory.     

Learning in Peacebuilding – Mission Impossible?

ABSTRACT

A common recommendation in the peacebuilding literature is that missions must learn from experiences on the local ground. Yet, if often remains unclear who has the authority to propose and diffuse new or critical knowledge. The article argues that peacebuilding can be understood as a socio-professional field in which education and professional careers condition the legitimacy to author new or critical insights. Hence, peacebuilding privileges knowledge that has been produced and is diffused in OECD-country research and academic institutions and the business world, most notably in strategic management consulting. Inversely, local knowledge is disparaged and, hence, unlikely to be promoted.     

CITES,wild plants,and opportunities for crime

The illegal trade in endangered plants damages both the environment and local communities by threatening and destroying numerous species and important natural resources. There is very little research which systematically addresses this issue by identifying specific opportunities for crime. This article presents the results of an interdisciplinary study which brings together criminological and conservation science expertise to identify criminal opportunities in the illegal wild plant trade and suggest strategies in order to prevent and mitigate the problem. Methodologically, the study adapts a crime proofing of legislation approach to the UN Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora and is based on documentary and interview data. Situational crime prevention is used as a framework to provide points for effective intervention.

农业灾害具有灾害种类繁多、灾害损失波及范围广、连锁性、周期波动性等特点,湖北省地质环境复杂,自然灾害种类多、灾情严重,是长江流域洪涝灾害发生频率最高、受灾最严重的省份之一,各类灾害长期困扰着湖北省农业及整个经济的发展。鉴于我国农业风险地区差异大、经济发展的非均衡性和我国财政的现实状况,农业保险经营必须因地制宜、因时制宜。     

信息监管:我国信贷资产证券化监管之最优选择

信贷资产证券化作为一种金融创新,将间接融资直接化,打通了银行信用与市场信用,但其系统性风险的放大功能对流行的功能性金融监管模式也提出了严重挑战,美国次贷危机即彰显了现有监管模式对于信贷资产证券化的监管缺陷和失败。反思次贷危机的根源,本质上可以归咎于金融信息披露的严重失范。比较美国新的金融监管体系改革,立足中国实践,重构金融监管体系必须以信息监管为中心,以此构建一个统合的金融信息平台,形成有效的信息共享机制,并进一步完善金融机构和监管者对金融创新产品的全程信息披露制度,强化对金融消费者的保护。
