How to overcome the cost of a criminal record for getting hired

Many theories emphasize how employment is protective against criminal recidivism, yet a criminal record is a major barrier for getting hired. We asked 591 managers to make hypothetical hiring decisions between two applicants whose key difference was the presence or absence of a criminal conviction. In addition, we randomly manipulated the education, references, wage, or experience of the applicant with the criminal record to identify which manipulations can offset the cost of the record on an applicant's probability of being selected. We found that, when credentials were the same, the applicant with a criminal record was unlikely to be hired. That applicant, however, could become likely to be hired (i.e., the likelihood crossed 50 percent) by having at least 1 year of relevant experience, a GED or a college degree, or references from a former employer or a professor. Incomplete degrees, references from criminal justice professionals, or wage discounts did not make the applicant with the record likely to be hired. Findings confirm that a criminal record carries a high employability cost but also indicate that this cost can be superseded by specific credentials that signal an applicant's reliability, which can be provided by existing programs and institutions.     

The “Tough on Crime” Competition: a Network Approach to Understanding the Social Mechanisms Leading to Federal Crime Control Legislation in the United States from 1973–2014

The increase in punitive sentiment in America over the last four decades is frequently attributed to changes in criminal justice policies and programs. While scholars have studied the impact of legislation and policy on justice system outcomes, less attention has focused on the role of political actors in legislative bodies who are largely responsible for enacting criminal justice legislation. The current study addresses this gap by examining the social organization of federal crime control policy in the U.S. Congress over a forty-two year period (1973–2014). Drawing from research on social network mechanisms, we examine whether crime control legislation was more politically attractive relative to other legislative topics, and whether Democrats and Republicans pursue these policies by working together or competing against each other. Our results provide novel insight into the mechanisms that contributed to the punitive movement at the federal level.     

The Ruff Neurobehavioral Inventory: Validity Indicators and Validity

This study examined the test validity of the respondent validity scales of the Ruff neurobehavioral inventory (RNBI). In a private practice sample of motor vehicle accident pain patients (n?=?54) without neurologic injury, the scores obtained for these scales were compared with and correlated with equivalent ones on the Millon clinical multi-axial inventory III (MCMI III) and the Detailed assessment of post-traumatic stress (DAPS). Results revealed that there was a consistent pattern of convergence and divergence in response styles across the three instruments. In terms of the RNBI interscale correlations, in particular, the results suggested that premorbid positive impression management and postmorbid negative impression management are related in this type of sample. These findings add to the concurrent validity of the RNBI, suggesting that the instrument provides relevant incremental information about the type of population studied. Limitations of the study and ideas for future research were discussed.     

Fatal bronchial asthma with bilateral lung collapse

Fatal bronchial asthma is classically characterized in pathology textbooks and journal articles as associated with lung hyperinflation at autopsy. The following is a report of a case of fatal bronchial asthma associated instead with bilateral lung collapse. This manifestation of asthma at autopsy has not been previously reported, to my knowledge. A 31-year-old man with a history of recurrent asthma was found in an unresponsive state in his automobile after a low-speed collision. Medical personnel during the resuscitation noted a decrease in breath sounds bilaterally and some wheezing. There was no escaping air with needle thoracostomies at the outset. Cardiac monitoring demonstrated pulseless electrical activity during most of the 30-minute resuscitation attempt. An autopsy disclosed collapsed lungs bilaterally. Microscopic examination of the lungs disclosed the characteristic histopathologic features of bronchial asthma.     

The Contribution of Open Government to Prosperity of Society

The study finds that open government does not only have effect on economic prosperity, but on social capital and environment through the mechanisms of Rule of Law and Control of Corruption. The role of Rule of Law and Control of Corruption are emphasized in this study, because of their significance in mediating open government and prosperity. Unless mechanisms like regulation formulation, law enforcement and control of corruption are not put into practice; open government itself will not be a driving force to a prosperous society.     

‘Lovers of liberty’?Prostitution and the Politics of Choice in Emma Donoghue’s Slammerkin

This article explores the way in which Emma Donoghue’s novel Slammerkin (2000) reflects long-standing feminist debates surrounding prostitution. We argue that not only does Donoghue’s portrayal of prostitution resist the pro versus anti dichotomy in which feminist perspectives on sex work are so often narrowly situated, but Slammerkin also foregrounds the complexity with which the politics of choice intersects with women’s decision to sell their bodies.     

Capital united? Business unity in regulatory politics and the special place of finance

While organized business is a key actor in regulatory politics, its influence is often conditional on the level of unity or conflict occurring within the business community at any given time. Most contemporary regulatory policy interventions put pressure on the normal mechanisms of business unity, as they are highly targeted and sector‐specific. This raises the question of how business unity operates across a highly variegated economic terrain in which costs are asymmetric and free‐riding incentives are high. In this paper, we empirically assess patterns of business unity within regulatory policymaking across different regulated sectors. Our analysis utilizes data from hundreds of regulatory policy proposals and business community reactions to them in the telecommunications, energy, agriculture, pharmaceutical, and financial sectors over a variety of institutional contexts. We find considerable empirical support for the “finance capital unity” hypothesis – the notion that the financial sector enjoys more business unity than other regulated sectors of the economy. When the financial sector is faced with new regulations, business groups from other sectors frequently come to its aid.
