Abstract: The Food and Drug Administration does not require surgical sutures to be tracked by manufacturer, physician, or patient; thereby, surgical sutures have been of little use to forensic practitioners who are tasked with establishing a positive identification with biological evidence. This study demonstrates the investigative process used to pinpoint suture manufacturers by presenting a case where surgical sutures were a distinctive characteristic that aided in the positive identification of skeletal remains. The suture’s manufacturer, construction material and structure, size, and medical use was determined by contacting a local surgical suture and orthopedic implant manufacturer and utilizing publicly available manufacturer websites, which provide catalogs and specific product details. This research was one of many lines of evidence used to establish the positive identification of a 47‐year‐old male. 相似文献

Raw material markets have proven to be challenging in recent years. The so‐called critical raw materials (CRMs), which are required for green technology, have particularly high environmental and supply risks. The revised German raw materials strategy attempts to address challenges of production and supply of CRMs and other mineral‐based raw materials. This contribution analyzes the motivation, measures, goals, and challenges of the German raw materials strategy in the light of global economic and political developments, applying the qualitative method GABEK®. Results show that the revised strategy is more ambitious and reaches farther than the initial strategy of 2010. Challenges that remain include the lack of willingness of the German industry to engage in mine production and the more pro‐active political approaches demonstrated elsewhere. As all major economic powerhouses outside of Europe pursue a hands‐on approach, it remains questionable if the revised German raw materials strategy will fundamentally be able to sustainably secure raw material supply for the German industry. 相似文献

A case of death due to spontaneous rupture of the oesophagus is reported. Few similar cases have been previously reported. In some the oesophageal wall had been weakened by previous ulceration or scarring. In this case there was no history or postmortem evidence of such damage. Biological material in forensic casework frequently contains a mixture of genotypes, with a predominance of material from the victim and only trace amounts from the person committing the crime. Physical separation of the two genotypes or preferential lysis of different cell types may sometimes be possible. However, it is often difficult to achieve complete separation due to the lysis of cells or lack of material. We have developed an enzymatic amplification system for the HLA DQA1 locus, that will allow the presence of individual alleles in a sample with mixed genotypes to be determined, independent of their initial proportion in the sample. This system permits the identification of an allele representing less than 10(-4) of the background genotype. Use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with general primers allows only alleles representing more than about 1% to be detected, while the allele-specific amplification represents up to a 1000-fold increase in sensitivity. This method was applied to a rape case and a combined rape and murder case; in both cases the biological evidential materials contained a mixture of alleles from the victim and the rapist. Allele-specific PCR revealed the presence of alleles identical to those of the suspect using DNA from a vaginal swab taken after a rape incident, whereas by using general primers in the PCR only trace amounts of alleles other than those of the victim were found. Similarly, allele-specific amplification of DNA from vaginal swabs from the murder case revealed the presence of alleles identical to those of the suspect, while standard PCR only indicated the presence of genetic material from the victim. 相似文献

When fresh blood is not available as a control in stain investigations extracted teeth, hair, preserved tissue samples, histological slides, cigarette butts or used stamps can also be used. This paper reports on a stain investigation performed 7 months after the death of the victim, where a bedside card from the medical records was successfully employed as a control blood sample. In a series of 10 bedside cards up to 9 years old, the investigation with the PCR method showed recognizable patterns in the STR systems SE 33 and TC 11. Matching patterns could be found from the 4 sections of each card (anti A, anti B, anti AB and anti D). A comparison of the oldest card with a fresh blood sample of the patient also showed matching patterns. AMPFLPs were successful with more recent cards. Using the PCR method typing of bedside cards from medical records up to 10 years old can be used in stain investigations. 相似文献
