Confrontations and Compromise: Dispute Resolution at a Worker Cooperative Coal Mine

This paper compares dispute-resolution behavior at a large coal mine in South Wales at two times: when the mine was run as a conventional, hierarchical organization by British Coal and, several years later, when it was bought out by the employees and converted into a worker cooperative. Synthesizing themes from law and society, organizational theory, and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) research, I demonstrate how shared ownership, flattened hierarchy, and cooperative ideology impact on disputing behavior. By changing from a hierarchical organization to a worker cooperative, the coal mine increased is level of procedural justice and transformed its dispute-resolution behavior to rely much more on informal resolution. Using qualitative methods, this research draws on 42 in-depth open interviews with miners and managers.     

Criminology and the sociology of organizations

The sociology of organizations offers conceptual tools that can be used bycriminologists. The logic of crossing intra-disciplinary boundaries to borrowconceptual tools rests in the analogical properties of structure and processacross social settings that are fundamental aspects of all social organization.Analogy itself is underrecognized and used as a tool for conceptual thinkingand analysis in sociology. In this article, I give examples of theories andconcepts from the sociology of organizations that can usefully be appliedto substantive criminological problems. Then I compare family violence andcorporate crime as examples of organizational misconduct, foregroundingthe organizational setting in order to examine links between micro-, meso-,and macro-levels of analysis. These two exercises demonstrate thatincorporating organization theory into criminological research can providenew insights in data analysis of substantive problems, build toward generalsociological theory, and toward integrative general criminological theorythat escapes the levels of explanation problem.     

Cleavage of 2-phenylpropan-1-ol and 2-phenylpropan-2-ol-glucuronide, 2 metabolites of isopropylbenzol (Cumol)

The behaviour of 2-phenyl-1-propanol (I) and 2-phenyl-2-propanol (II) and their glucuronides with HCl has been investigated. While I shows a high acidic constancy, II undergoes a partial conversion into 2-phenylpropane (III) which itself yields numerous products. The glucosidic bond of glucuronide I is quantitatively split by 10.0% HCl, whereby an aglucone yield of nearly 100% is obtained. The second glucuronide behaves otherwise: the recovery of II is very low (only 40% to 45%) with HCl concentrations of 1.0%-20.0%, although with 1.0% HCl 100% of the glucuronide is hydrolysed.
